Long ago, long before Ainatar’s birth, when the lands were still young and Demons roamed freely across the planes, a Dark Lord ruled. Neither man nor beast, this ‘Lord’ possessed unfathomable powers that none could best, or withstand. For many fearful years this lord ruled the lands with a merciless iron grip that none could break. Those that tried suffered fates worse then death, as did those of their kin…their blood. None stood up to the Dark Lord until the day an innocent stood before him.

This innocent was but a child, and none knew where she came from. With hope rekindled, those that suffered under the Dark Lord’s rule stood behind the child, for it was seen then that the lord held no power over her. Those that had lived through that fateful battle recall that it was like watching living shadows dance about the girl, and yet none of them could lay a finger on her. Unable to harm her with magic, and enraged that one so young could be the cause of his demise, the Dark Lord impaled the child on his dark blade, confident he had bested her.

As the blood spilled from the fatal wound, the Dark Lord shrieked in rage, as well as agony, for like a snake, the child’s blood coiled about him, burning his armor as if it were acid. Before his final breath, the Dark Lord vowed he would return, and seek vengeance on those who shared the child’s blood. Fearful of this promised day, and upon the child’s instruction the strongest and most capable mages separated the Dark Lord into three parts; the Heart, Soul, and Body, and sealed them within three cursed relics before scattering them to the farthest reaches of Xain. Before the child vanished, she gave a final instruction; those that had taken part in the sealing of the Dark Lord must also seal the gates that allowed the Demons to roam the land. She also warned them that this task would have dire consequences, however if they wished to be free from any reminders of the Dark Lord, or the possibility of him being revived, then it had to be done.

Asking no questions, the mages approached the gates, and were greeted by many a Demon, all seeming to know the task they had come to perform. Many died, Demons and Mages alike, however those that survived completed the task, sealing the gates and locking the demons back in their realm. However for those who sealed the gates, they were forever curse. Not only could they not leave the lands where the gates were located but they were also forever changed. Painfully their bodies shifted…mutated, until nothing human stood to guard the gates. Instead four canine-like beasts were left in the mages stead, chained to the wall at the four key points: North, South, East, and West. Should any try to approach the gates, or should any try to escape, the Guardians would devour them.

Unaware of the fate that befell the mages, and seemingly free forever from the Dark Lord’s oppression, the inhabitants of Xain, or those that remained, celebrated for seven days, and seven nights. The child…the one who had risked her life to save them was never seen again. Many believe she died from her wound, returning to the earth that she had saved. Others still believe she is out there somewhere, watching over the lands she loved.

It is believed that where the child’s blood spilled, new life grew anew, and from this life, Ainatar was awakened, and thus the reign of the ‘Mother Goddess’ began.
