Welcome to Deep Forest Weyr! We're a small but active Dragonriders of Pern roleplaying community set in 10th Pass Pern, far in the future after the effects of AIVAS have become completely forgotten and circumstances have caused Thread to fall once more. We focus primarily on character conflict, so if making life all sorts of interesting for your characters is something you want, you won't find a better place!
News

Much to everyone's surprise, Kalirith has laid a clutch on the Sands! Searchriders are being sent out to bring in more candidates to stand for the clutch.

It's Turnover! Dragonriders are welcome to go where they please, Weyrlings and Candidates are to notify their respective Masters if they also choose to depart for the festivities.

It was well into Turnover now. Many a rider had gone off to take part at one of the larger celebrations taking place at bigger Holds, or had gone to visit their families, but the Weyr itself, as usual, was hosting something for those who stayed behind.

It was cold (it was winter, after all), but the air was still. Lower Caverns workers were setting out glowbaskets in the Bowl as night began to fall, because it wasn't a terribly unpleasant cold, at least not for riders used to the cooler temperatures. The skies were clear, clear enough that the moonlight would nearly make the glows unnecessary.

"I'm hungry," Lydri complained, tugging at Kalin's sleeve as she followed the older girl around some of the booths passing traders had set up.
"It's not even dark yet. Dinner will be soon enough."
"I'm bored!"
"You were the one who didn't want to leave the Weyr."
"Nuh uh! It's 'cause Siryenth didn't want to leave! Where's everyone? Can we find everyone?"
"I've no idea who you mean."
"My friends! :D Come on, maybe they're still inside!" she said excitedly, starting off, and Kalin simply sighed and followed.

She stopped following when the girl, skipping merrily along in front of her suddenly stopped moving, started to hug herself, started to shake. "I feel funny," Lydri mumbled, sounding so confused about it that it baffled Kalin for a moment too -- and then she heard a shriek from above, glanced up quickly to see an unmistakably bright green launching herself into the air, and swore when she heard the green repeat the call, because it was a familiar enough sound to anyone who spent any time in a Weyr.

~Lycalith!~
It was enough for the silver to understand, and moments later they landed on Siryenth's ledge, and Lydri was so gone at that point that Kalin had to carry her to the bed, watched with the faintest glimmer of worry in her eyes as the greenrider curled up into herself, eyes blank.

She only watched for a few moments, swore again and then headed out to where her own dragon was patiently waiting. "She's not going to understand in the morning," she told Lycalith softly, placing a hand on the silver's neck, feeling warmth bubble up inside of her too, set off by the rising green. Feeling the unrest in her silver, the way Lycalith was tensing, she frowned, willing it all away, forcing herself to stare down at the ground until she felt the rush within her dragon subside, thanked Faranth that it wasn't near Lycalith's time yet.

The green was glowing as brightly as ever, straining upwards into the sky. She was vivid enough that neither girl had noticed how the hide had slowly brightened this past sevenday, and it had been cloudy enough, cold enough, that her sluggishness had seemed natural.
"Back to our weyr," Kalin told Lycalith softly, climbing onto the silver's back. "She's not ready for this, not nearly, but we can't do anything but watch, can we?"
The silver rumbled softly, and obediently took off for the nearby ledge that was hers.

Siryenth let out another cry, then, shortly after her second one, pausing briefly in the sky to flair her wings out, to catch the attention of any of the male dragons still in the Weyr. A brown answered and lifted into the air after her, then a blue, and then another, and when the third bugle had come, she rose higher, eyes blazing with purples, fueled entirely by the sudden surge of dragon-lust that had overtaken her.

Broth glanced up from his ledge, a yawn escaping from his maw as he did so. Ah, a green.
Are you busy?
~What? Why?...~
A'ron looked up. ~Oh for the love of little green dragons...~
Precisely.
~Give me a lift up before you run off.~
But then she'll get away.
~Not my problem~
... You can find a ride.
And with that Broth spread his wings and launched after the green, adding his voice to those who joined in the chase.
"D:!!" A'ron whined for a moment mentally before the lust began to build up in him. Quickly he snatched a passing greenrider who's green had risen recently and thus was at little risk. "Give me a ride to that one's weyr."
"Broth too lazy?"
"Too impatient."
"Ah. Yeah, come on." So A'ron made it to the weyr biggrin.gif Yay!

Ryogath had spotted the color change and had been watching this green. He would've tried to be bold and scoot closer to her so he could be ready when she was (and not get lost!) but that big silver was mean. Regardless, he was ready when she took off and plucked Al'x (who was sitting on his weyr ledge enjoying the sunset) up without a sound. He set his ride none-to-gently down on the ledge before adding in his voice.

The cold weather was perfect, as far as Kayla was concerned as she scrubbed away at an itchy patch on Tristh's wing joint. The blue was sprawled out on his ledge in a dead sleep, his wings limp and jaw slacking open, wide tongue lolling out to one side. As she continued massaging oil into Tristh's itchy spot, his leg began to twitch like a canine's when you scratched just the right spot. Kayla smirked.

In celebration of Turnover, she'd let her blue gorge himself on herdbeasts, and his current nap was probably more of a food coma. His deep sleep would probably mean she had no ride down to the festivities for a while, but that was ok... Even the most outgoing need a night in every once in a while. She finished up and wiped the excess oil off along Tristh's bulging side, leaving a darker stripe as she ducked under his limp wing and maneuvered her way toward his hind end and the entrance to her weyr.

Just as she was tiptoeing over his tail, Kayla heard the clear and piercing shriek of a green in heat. The sound made her cringe, knowing her blue too well. In an instant, Tristh was awake--but not completely alert.
Green? Where? What? MINE!!!

He scrambled to his feet, claws scraping on stone and tail lashing in his haste. Kayla, unfortunately, had paused in a precarious position, straddling Tristh's tail, and was thrown onto the ledge as Tristh struggled to his feet. She yelped, banging her elbow on the hard stone as she landed.
"Shard it Tristh! Was that completely necessary?" Kayla hissed in pain and clung to her bruised elbow, still seated squarely on her butt.

Tristh blinked his inner lid at Kayla, weaving his head from side to side and beginning to dance on the ledge in anxiety.
Yes... No... Yes... GREEN! Please Mine, please?

Kayla scowled as she looked up at her blue; as he squirmed around in his excitement, she could see his over-full belly swaying right along with him.
"You're stuffed right up to your mouth, can you even fly?" Despite her exasperation and pain from her tumble, Kayla felt Tristh's interest peaking and knew she couldn't dissuade him, stuffed or not. She sighed.
"You'd better drop me off then."

Tristh complied with a bob of his head, offering his muzzle to help Kayla to her feet so she could scramble onto his back. Before she was even settled, they were off, Tristh taking a running leap off their ledge. Kayla felt her stomach sink as they plummeted a few meters before Tristh was able to get enough air under his wings to bring them back up, circling back toward Lydri's ledge. Tristh landed heavily, jolting Kayla's sore elbow. He nearly sent her sprawling again as he took off, struggling into the air, his belly distended as an egg-heavy queen's. Kayla shook her head, sighing again and turning to go see which green Tristh was so adamant to chase.

Finally airborne, Tristh fought his way above the crater of the weyr, bugling as he caught up to the small entourage behind Siryenth. He could feel the weight of his last meal gurgling around in his stomach and snorted, ignoring better judgement and fitting himself in with the other males, ready to give it his best.

((Comic-con is oh so tiring but so much fun.))

She barely noticed the addition of a few more male dragons into the trail of dragons following her (which admittedly was not too big, but she had never been particularly vain and didn't mind it.)

Angling her wings downwards, she dove, leveling off just before she hit the water of the lake, limbs and tail skimming along the top of it as she flew, rumbling pleasantly. She wasn't moving particularly quickly, but the swerve to the left was sudden: something had caught her eye, but nearly as quickly as she'd decided to turn, she was flying upwards, attention focused now on getting as high as she could go.

((I had my wisdom teeth out on Thursday of Comic con weekend so I sat alone with a puffy face while everybody had fun ;o; ))

Tristh lurched after her in eager pursuit--perhaps a little too eager. He seemed to leave his bulging stomach above him as he followed Siryenth down, and it swung ungainly beneath him, weighing him down as he dove. He grunted as he leveled out, feeling the contents of his stomach shift uneasily. He belched and gave a slightly weaker bugle of interest, pushing on despite his protesting stomach.

((I was in Fresno harvesting fruit that week, so don't worry, I wasn't having much fun either ))

Broth, being one of the larger dragons in the chase, was less dexterous than his competitors. He pulled up earlier than others, this not being his first flight, but still nearly crashed in an undignified heap into the lake waters. Pulling up, water streaming from his lower body and wings beating somewhat clumsily, he struggled to gain back the ground the lake had taken from him.

Ryogath, being on the smallish side for a blue, didn't have nearly as much difficulty, easily keeping up with the spunky green's dive to the lake. He was flying too close, however, for when she rose back up, he overshot. While it was easy enough to backtrack, the blue pumped his wings quickly to make up any lost ground and catch back up to the shockingly neon green green.

The night was coming into its own now, and the moons were out. They were lovely and k'yo couldn't help but admire them. He stood off from everyone else, leaning against a wall just staring up at the moons, and contemplating the horrible mess he had made of his life. This was how D'orean found him, and feeling in need of some familiar company the old man sauntered over to the melancholy youth. He came to a stop just in front and to the side of him, letting him see that he was there and waited for k'yo to initiate the conversations.
K'yo tried to ignore his uncle but after a while he gave in to the older mans scheming; motioning towards the sky he said, "Lovely aren't they."
D'orean directed his attention to where the hand beckoned and paused for a moment before replying, "Yes, they are, but they are not what's on your mind this night kyonkichi."
K'yo grimaced, "i told you not to call me that old man"
D'orean smiled, "You'll always be my little kyonkichi, no matter what your friends call you."
K'yo sighed, resigning to give in to his uncles will, "I look in a mirror and I don't recognize myself; the person that I was and the person that I am are not the same and I'm afraid that that distinction becomes harder to make every day."
"Are you unhappy with the person that you are?"
"Yes."
"Then change."
"You make it sound so easy."
"It is."
They both stared up at the moons a bit longer until a sound drew their attention elsewhere and the two smiled at each other knowingly at the trouble that was about to happen. Many time k'yo was reminded of how much he loved his green and this was one of them. The fact that he wouldn't be compelled to join in on this forced entanglement while he felt like he did heartened him. D'orean thinking along the same lines, believing that his dragons age would spare him the ridiculousness of a flight was in disbelief when he heard a familiar roar add itself to the fray.

Meanwhile in other parts of Pern

R'ver was walking quickly, he had to be quick if he wanted to get away from his pursuers. He could hear their hurried footsteps not far behind him but Malicth was now within view and his salvation was within his grasp. Just as these thoughts passed through his head a figure stepped out of a side passage to block his path. It was R'ave, his nephew that was more like a brother to him than anything else. He could face the others scorn but he was hoping he could avoid his. As R'ave stood in front of him arms at stretched and sad disappointment in his eyes r'ver stared back openly with alice in his. Only one question lay between them now, and when the others were within sight R'ave asked it.
"Why are you running away?"
R'ver stared back and with venom on his lips he said, "Don't you remember, its how i've always handled my problems. I've been running since I was a little boy when I fist took my life into my own hands and I see no reason to stop now."
"You're not a boy anymore, you have to handle your problems like ......."
"like what, like a man, how wold a man handle this"
"He'd go back in there, he'd send a reply to that letter"
R'ver looked at the ground shamefully, but his heart was as hard as it was before, "I can't do that"
"Why not?"
R'ver met his gaze, face deadpan and eyes filled with hate, "Because i hate fathers and i never wanted to be one, i never wanted to be like him"
By this time Riven, Ph'n, Kira, and Kaddena were close enough that they could hear what was being said and their reactions to what he had said was plain upon their collective faces. They remained silent, all of them, with r'ver the center of their attention until finally Kaddena decided to speak.
"Reaver, you could never be like our father. I know you, you're a good man, you would nev......"
R'ver turned on her and started yelling in a voice loud enough to attract most of the holds attendants, "Shut, you don't know anything about me. Im a good man, I would never. Never what kadie, never harm someone, never kill someone. You know nothing about anything you stupid girl. Halon was a good man before us, before I came into this world he was a good man, and look what happened to him. I'm not a good man, I never was so how much of a chance have I got. Tell me if you're so smart," r'ver Started t walk towards her, "tell me" he yelled again raising his ruin of an arm into the air as he did so.
Kaddena did not cringe before her brothers anger but she could not stop the tears from flowing forth from he lovely sad eyes. R'ver saw those eyes and became more ashamed then he had ever been. He had never raised his voice at his little sister, the person that was most precious to him; and he had most certainly never raised his hand, whole or other wise, against her. He couldn't bear it, he saw this as proof of his doubts, his fears. He was a monster and he couldn't stand to be around these people that cared about him right now.
Pushing past a stunned R'ave he made his way towards Malicth.
Mine, your upset, what happened, who made you sad. I will eat them for you if you like
~No one love, lets just go~
But the suns not all the way down yet, i want to sun some more
~the sun will be in the sky again tomorrow, lets go~
What are we doing
~were running away~
To?
~The only place that a monster like me belongs, Deepforest~

The two came out from between and could immediately tell that something was up. Unfortunately R'ver didn't figure it out quickly enough or he might have been able to stop what transpired next but that is the way of things. Soon malicth answered the call letting out a tremendous roar echoing from the depths of his lungs. Nothing could stop the dragon at this point, and he barely paid heed to his rider as he dropped him off at the proper weyr and was off again in no time.
R'ver cursed, this was the last thing he needed right now.

((i was finally able to reintroduce most of my characters, even if some of them were in a rather limited fashion, thank you for providing this opportunity roq, and the insight we just gained into r'ver's severely damaged psyche was glorious.))[I]

((Wooo conventiontime. PAX was glorious and I may or may not have pigflu now but it was so entirely worth it.))

She had risen high into the air, but Siryenth was a fickle dragon and just as suddenly as she had decided she wanted to fly up, she roared and tightly folded her wings in, jetting back down towards the lake.

The flight itself had quickly become more thrilling than the lust that had seized her, that had thrown her into the air, and she was having a good time with it. The water that had splashed onto her earlier was now rapidly evaporating with her descent: it was pleasantly cooling, and almost ticklish to her oversensitized hide so she even wiggled a bit on the way down, not flying nearly as fast as she could.

karaseth soared high into the air in a blissful dreaminess following his soon to be love as she soared into the heavens when he noticed another contender give his roar to the confusion but his attention would not be torn away from what he truly desired. Karaseths focus was so great that he did not even see the other dragon until he was passed by him, soaring through the air faster than he could manage. at first the startled dragon had to assume that his new opponent was a smaller bronze from the size of him, but when he saw his coloring he was surprised. it was a brown, a big one, and he realized that he knew him. this was malicth, dragon of his mines friend, and knowing this only made karaseth burn hotter with anticipation of his success. he would win and he would show this young buck how the old school handled their business. it was then that he saw the shift in posture of his rising beauty, he knew what she was going to do, he could anticipate where she would be. karaseth came out of his ascent before she had fully started her dive and made a beeline for where she would soon be letting out a triumphant roar as he did.

Malicth was rising to catch his prey, she would be his tonight and he knew it, the undeniable fact in his draconic mind giving him strength. soon he saw karaseth and the idea came into his mind to pull one over on the old brown. increasing the speed of his ascent he came in line with the dragon and placed himself on a paralleling course just above his so that as he passed by him he would not be seen till he was right above him and thats when he panned to really put on some speed. everything was going as he planned, he would chase after his prey and pull one over an his senior at the same time, a fun day it would be. everything he had planned went perfectly and as he passed by the other brown he emitted a gloating roar.
malicth stayed on corse, not bothering to look back, the cocky brown saw no need to watch is sparing partners progress in the chase and he was close, then suddenly she was gone, descending at a speed that he would not have believed if he had not seen; he watched her as she fell to pern and marveled at her beauty. he was brought back to reality by karaseths roar but by the time he was able to correct himself and overcome the upward acceleration that his peed and caused he was a long ways behind and he did not know if he could win, but malicth was never one to give up. Defiantly he issued forth a fearsome growl and sped forward with all the speed he could muster, the joints in his wings aching from the strain. he would win this if it killed him.

(( it's been a long time since i rped a mating flight so if its not good guys please tell me so that i can try to make it better ))

Broth figured he really should stop bothering with greens. Especially young greens. This up and down business was far too much work for the brown. He changed directions without too much difficulty when she dove down, choosing to not follow the green exactly and instead maintain an angle and height that would let him hopefully predict any change.

Ryogath followed the green with more grace than many of the others, following her closely and trying to almost be her shadow. He echoed her roar with his own enthusiastic one.

((I'm not dead, I'm just a full fledged engineering student now! biggrin.gif Sorry for the extended absence. This will also be reposted in Turnover so it can continue...))

As much as down had disagreed with his over-full stomach, up was worse. As Tristh made valiant attempt to bank upwards after Siryenth, gravity reared its ugly head and lashed out at his stomach, dragging him down and tying his belly up in knots as his flight path slowly curved back down toward the bowl. He let out a gooey, moist belch followed by a moan, falling out of the fray. Mine, I don't feel right... He gave another painful, hiccuping belch and continued to weave through the air.

"Oh Shards..." In Lydri's weyr, Kayla suddenly paled, so caught up in her dragon's lust that when he sickened, she followed suit. Staggering out of the semi-circle around Lydri's bed, Kayla steadied herself against the wall and fought against the roiling feeling in her gut. She felt bile rising in her throat and fought against it, simultaneously cursing her dragon for being so foolish. She pulled herself away from his pain a little and was able to get to the ledge without being sick. She, unlike Tristh, had only eaten a snacky lunch, since the evening festivities were just getting underway when the flight began.

Tristh's belly was even further distended, bloating as he swallowed air during the stress of Flight, gurgling and twisting painfully as he coasted down toward Lydri's ledge. His eyes were quickly losing the violet hues of lust, exchanged instead for yellow anxiety and gray pain. He made a graceless landing, weaving his head from side to side as Kayla scrambled up, her own gut still cramping painfully in sympathy for her dragon. Kayla didn't even manage a sigh for a missed opportunity... Tristh was her concern now.

It hurts. It Hurts. IT HURTS. Tristh's mental voice was increasingly strained and loud the farther he coasted, dipping in low enough over the bowl to startle a group of weyrfolk on their way to the dining hall. He landed with a skid near the entrance to the healers' offices, his stomach still gurling and swinging beneath him.

Kayla leapt off as Tristh touched down, stumbling forward and trotting into the healers' muttering worriedly under her breath. It hurts. It Hurts. IT HURTS. Tristh's continued complaining echoed in her mind as she yelled into the dimly lit room, "Sylvia? Rhia?"

((Poor Tristh D: ))

She was growing tired now, but Ryogath's roar right behind her and the shadows of the other dragons all around was making her anxious to not be caught yet, to not have to stop flying yet.

It was suddenly less about flying and more about getting away, and her eyes whirled with worry as she moved forward.

((Permission given, naturally))

Ryogath watched as her flight became less playful and more desperate and erratic. He tried to keep up with her movements, tried to predict them, but that certainly wasn't the blue's strong points.

Meanwhile, Broth took his chance as the little green became almost panicked in her flight patterns. He dove down and swooped in to win his prize only to let out a roar of frustration as she dodged out of his grasp.

Ryogath let out startled sound as he suddenly found the shimmering green prize of the flight in his grasp, Siryenth having veered from Broth and right into the blue. He was so startled that he momentarily forgot what was even going on and his wings stopped flapping for a moment even. It was when the green began to pull away from him did his instincts kick back in and he quickly grabbed hold of her, twining his tail and neck with hers.

Back in the weyr, Al'x, as much as mix of startled and lustful as his dragon, stumbled towards Lydri.

((D: That sentence just felt wrong to type. ))
