Large Increases to Military, Especially Navy

While all branches of the Duxburian military continue to expand, the navy has recently been augmented with a substantial amount of new ships. This emphasis on sea power is intended to allow the navy to compete with other single-branch powers that pour most of their resources into their navy.

The navy's 14, aging heavy cruisers were decommissioned in favor of new cruisers. The smaller, lighter cruisers essentially perform the same job, but with more mobility. The huge volume of new cruisers signals that these will be workhorses of the fleets.

A new Supercarrier was christened, the DUS Varimar. Several new aircraft carriers were constructed as well. All transport ships were decommissioned in favor of more amphibious assault ships, which can carry 5,000 men each and provide air cover. With 100 of these, the Duxburian Navy is now capable of transporting half a million men, with gear and air cover.

There has also been a fleet expansion. Instead of 6 fleets, each with 1 carrier, there will be 9 fleets, each with 2 carriers (although not every fleet will have a supercarrier). A fleet with 2 aircraft carriers in the new formations will be equivalent to the carrier power of an old fleet. The 7th Fleet will be deployed in Norimere, the 8th Fleet will be deployed in Byram, and the 9th Fleet will be deployed in Chirez.

The army added more manpower and upgraded all of its infantry units to mechanized brigades. Some special force units were reduced

All units in the Duxburian Military are now on active duty. The old reserve system has been deprecated in favor of faster and more effective capabilities.

600 Nuclear Missiles Decommissioned

In recognition of changing times, the Office of War ordered a small reduction in the number of stockpiled missiles. 600 intercontinental ballistic missiles have been removed from the arsenal and scheduled for decommission. The nuclear fuel will be converted for energy generation in civilian power plants. The nation's nuclear deterrent remains at a level sufficient to ensure good protection.

All ICBM missile silos have been decommissioned in favor of mobile launch pads. The mobile pads are more expensive, but also difficult to detect. This change greatly enhances the nation's nuclear second-strike threat. With all delivery systems now located in mobile units like strategic bombers, SSBNs, and mobile launch pads, potential aggressors will be even further dissuaded from a preemptive strike. The Office of War issued a statement to Verington University officially debunking the urban legend of a missile silo located under the University Green. Most old missile silos will be open to the public for tour when the decommissioning process is complete. A few will be auctioned to the public for use as converted residences.

Duxburian Union to Commission Drone Carrier

The Office of War has released details for a new "Drone Carrier". The new ship will be capable of carrying drones that are controlled at sea. Noridar, Ltd has produced a drone model that is designed to land on carriers and controlled by button commands, instead of pilot joysticks. This new model, the D-X1, literally has a "push-button start" with similar button commands for take-off, landing, targeting, and even refueling. The drone is intended to be compatible with the nation's tankers, allowing it to operate at ranges that exceed conventional bombers.

More testing is necessary to ensure that the drone's 3 million lines of code are free of bugs and errors, while a new carrier must be designed specifically to house the D-X1. Currently, a hellicarrier is being used for testing. The new carrier design will likely be classed as a hellicarrier, with similar specifications, including some defensive capabilities.

Duxburian Navy to develop new class of SSGN and long range SLCM

The new Type 666 SSGN is production-ready and approved for construction, along with the new Lucifer SLCM. These are unique weapons systems designed entirely by the Duxburian Union to give it a competitive edge in long range naval conflicts. This capability is now a priority of the Office of War, given the nation's recent close call with Northern Caesarea.

While the nation already possesses SSGNs and a variety of cruise missiles, these 2nd generation weapons are superior in every way except price. Both systems are expected to cost more than their type averages. While the Lucifer cruise missile is capable of carrying a nuclear 200 kt warhead, the Office of War has confirmed that all missiles deployed for live use on ships and submarines will be armed with conventional 1,000 lb warheads.

The Duxburian Navy anticipates switching most of its long range cruise missiles to Lucifers. Kalinaar Weapons Systems, LTD remains under contract to develop medium and short range cruise missiles to replace existing classes that perform below expectations.

Name: Type 666 SSGN

Description: This is a large, top-of-the-line, guided missile submarine. Designed with the Duxburian Union's latest stealth technology, this is a virtually undetectable hunter, capable of targeting a variety of surface targets from long range. The Type 666 can transport a team of up to 120 special forces in its lockout chamber. This chamber may alternatively carry up to 4 unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) for surveillance purposes (non-weapons bearing).

The Type 666 costs more than the average for a premier SSGN, but it accommodates more missile tubes than other SSGNs and is capable of launching all of its Lucifer cruise missiles by manual rotation in the event of a malfunction in fire control. The submarine can fire while submerged. 6 torpedo tubes allow it to defend against other submarines.

Two crews man the SSGN in shifts that allow it to operate 24/7 and its range is limited only by the food supply. A double hull aids in protection from indirect hits and adds buoyancy.

Name: Lucifer SLCM

Type:Long-range, all-weather, anti-ship / land attack, subsonic, submersible / ship launched cruise missile

Manufacturer: Kalinaar Weapons Systems, LTD

Range: Est. 1,697 miles

Speed: Mach 0.9 (Subsonic)

Cruising Altitude:
24-36 feet above sea surface
92-110 feet above ground surface

Nuclear 200 kt device

Propulsion: Turbofan engine with solid-fuel boosters

Weight: 3,000 lbs

Length: 22.4 ft

Diameter: 21.3 ft

Cost: K:550 thousand per missile

Description: This is an expensive, but highly effective cruise missile designed for use against ships, submarines, and land targets. Its conventional warhead can penetrate the armor of capital ships and target them from long range. Sea-launched Lucifers cruise well below the 50ft mark and can be launched in Sea-State 6 from a surface ship or in any sea-state by a submarine. They can be launched from missile or torpedo tubes (range is greatly reduced when launched from torpedo tubes at submerged targets). Lucifers launched at land targets travel much slower than true surface cruise missiles, but cruise at such low altitude that detection and interception are difficult.

Lucifers may be satellite-guided and accept in-flight retargeting from a list of pre-selected alternatives or overridden with new targets. The missile can send status data back to its controller and has a loitering camera to allow the controller to assess real time conditions. Lucifers can accept manual flight path overrides in order to hit targets that suddenly move.

Duxburian Rocket Forces to Develop Non-Nuclear EMP Device

Following international backlash over the use of a nuclear weapon on Dromund Kaas, even without physical destruction or fallout, the military has decided to develop a non-nuclear alternative. This new "Super EMP" will be named the "DK-20/DK-30" missile. It is planned to use a 2 stage rocket booster with medium range (DK-20) or a 3 stage booster with long range (DK-30). Both variants will have a high altitude (400km+) ceiling. When detonated, the DK-20/30 will produce a strong electromagnetic pulse and nothing else.

The weapon will be treated like a strategic nuclear ICBM and count against the nation's nuclear arsenal, with all the usual launch procedures and security features afforded to nuclear weapons. Use of one will be considered equal to launching a nuclear missile in terms of mission severity and potential counterattack repercussions.

Duxburian Military Completes Massive Upgrade

Recent instability has prompted the nation to make major changes to its armed forces. Most infantry units have been upgraded from motorized to mechanized to improve their offensive capabilities. The army remains in its 4 Grand Armies configuration. The Immortal Thunder saw the lion's share of increases, greatly expanding its fighter, multi-role fighter, attack helicopter, and bomber squadrons. The navy re-introduced diesel-powered submarines to the 8th and 9th fleets, which are used purely for coastal defense. It also greatly expanded the patrol boat program to better cover the nation's numerous bays, harbors, rivers, and lakes. The 7 blue water fleets remain in their present configuration, with 23 corvettes, 39 frigates, 46 destroyers, 11 amphibious assault carriers, 2 helicarriers, 4 light aircraft carriers, 2 standard aircraft carriers, 26 nuclear-powered attack submarines, and 11 guided missile submarines per fleet.
