Soviet Union - October 5, 2006 01:31 PM (GMT)
    Official name: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialistitseskikh Respublik
    Conventional name: Soviet Union; Sovietskii Soyuz

    Compulsory military service (-2 IC upkeep costs.)

    Soviet Armed Forces and paramilitary formations

    Branches:
  • Ministry of Defence (MO): Ground forces (4.220.000) [plus Airborne assault troops (600.000)], Rear services (2.324.000), Air force (772.000), Navy (470.120), Anti-air defence forces (584.000), Strategic rocket forces (300.000), Civil defence (150.000);
  • Committee for State Security (KGB): Border troops (286.280), Security troops (80.000);
  • Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD): Interior Troops (380.000);
  • Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU): Special-purpose troops (165.000).

    Total military personnel:
  • Grand total: 13.953.920 under two ministries, one directorate and one committee and their organised reserves, organized in twelve branches as following, plus part of the commercial airliner Aeroflot in reserve:
  • Armed Forces: 9.420.120 in eight branches;
  • MVD Troops: 380.000 in one branch;
  • KGB Troops: 366.280 in two branches;
  • GRU Troops: 165.000 in one branch;
  • Aeroflot: 126.000 as part of the Strategic Air Transport Reserve (not included as active units);
  • Other: (Total manpower, including all active, reserve, discharged, police and Aeroflot personnel exceeds 122.953.420 men and women, not including civil service reservists.)

    An additional 18 million servicemen are discharged from active duty, of whom 6 million can be recalled within 72 hours to fully man all military units. Some 100 million males and females are enlisted as reservists, with special units organized using them and decommissioned material during wartime; of them, 3.622.520 are under organized units for the five main branches (Ground forces, Navy, Air force, Air defence and Airborne troops) and Aeroflot, including among them at least 226 Ground forces, Interior troops, Airborne Assault Troops and Border troops divisions.

    Finally, 1.890 active Aeroflot long- and medium-range aircraft are also listed under the equipment, as they are part of the Strategic Air Transport Reserve, and 116 Border troops naval vessels are listed as reserves as they have coast guard duties during peacetime. Circa 1.030 shore-based Naval aviation bomber and ground-attack aircraft are also listed, belonging to the Navy instead of the Air force as it would normally be, together with four Naval Spetsnaz (special forces) and eight Coastal Defence (artillery) brigades.

    Organization and Purposes:
    Ground forces: The Ground forces are the USSR's equivalent to the Army of other countries and includes motorized rifle, armoured, and artillery units. Although the ground-based air defences are under the Ground forces, they are operated by the Air Defence. The Engineer, Signal and Chemical troops are, administratively, under the Ground forces, although in general they form independent branches. The Ground forces are organised under 284 Motorised Rifle, 52 Tank and 38 Artillery divisions.

    Navy: The Navy is organized in four fleets and one flotilla. Each of the fleets has its own land-based naval aviation and a single Naval Spetsnaz brigade. Its defined purposes include the defence of the Soviet Union's home waters, its overseas interests, and the elimination of foreign sea-based nuclear deterrents/threats and sea forces. The Navy also commands an artillery division (consisted of 20.000 personnel) that is designated for coastal defence tasks, operating coastally-deployed artillery and missiles.

    Anti-air defence forces: The Anti-Air Defence Forces given the mission of defending the Soviet industrial, military, and administrative centres and the armed forces against strategic bombing as well as strategic aerospace and theatre air defence. Air defence is divided in two main categories, land-based and air-based. Land-based air defence units are organized in a style similar to the Ground forces' whereas the air-based are organized in a style similar to the Air force's. Anti-air defence operates the land-based anti-aircraft systems, the country's AWACS and the majority of fighter aircraft.

    Air forces: The Air force's organization is largely modelled after the army's. Four squadrons (usually 500 men and 30 aircraft each) form an air regiment (2.000 personnel and 120 aircraft), three air regiments form an air division (6.000 personnel and 360 aircraft) and multiple air divisions form air armies (12.000+ personnel and 720+ aircraft). The air force is mainly equipped with aircraft not fulfilling the Anti-air Defence's roles, however including a number of fighters.

    Airborne Assault Troops: The Airborne Assault Troops are not actually an independent branch, but a semi-independent formation of the Ground Forces directly under the General Staff. The VDV's 600.000 personnel is divided in two 'wings' with two different purposes; the Rapid-reaction force (numbering ca. 300.000 personnel and able to be deployed within 30 days), and the Instant-reaction force (numbering another 300.000 and deployable within 3 days). It also possesses an 300.000-strong reserve that is mobilisable within 7 days and deployable within 30. The aims of the branch are the support of the Ground forces in warfare, rapid projection of Soviet military power in the region, etc. Unit organization includes mainly brigades and divisions, similarly organized as in the Ground forces. This branch is in close cooperation with the Ground forces and the Air force.

    Strategic rocket forces: The Strategic forces operate the country's land-based strategic weapons. The standard unit is the brigade, typically consisting of 2.500 personnel and operating 10 missiles, mobile or stationary; for administrative purposes, Strategic Missile Divisions (4-8 brigades; 10.000-20.000 personnel and 40-80 missiles) and Strategic Missile Armies (3+ divisions; 30.000+ personnel and 120+ missiles) also exist.

    Rear services: The Rear Services supply the armed forces with ammunition, fuel, spare parts, food, clothing, and other matériel, and also construct and maintain the Soviet Union's military and sometimes civil transport infrastructure. They are organized in the same style as the Ground forces, but units larger than division are not found commonly.

    Civil defence: The purpose of civil defence is to provide protection for leadership and population in wartime and to ensure the Soviet Union's ability to continue production of military matériel during a nuclear or a protracted conventional war. Organization is similar to the Ground forces, but units larger than division are rare.

    KGB Border troops: Border troops protect the USSR's land and maritime frontier, and in wartime they become a frontline combat service (including coast guard duties). They operate land-, sea- and air-based systems to fulfil their missions. As such, they are mainly organized in style similar to the Ground forces (albeit mainly in brigades, and units larger than division are practically non-existent) while there are also contingents organized similar to Naval and Air force sub-units (such as naval and air squadrons and air regiments operating helicopters). There are 14 Border troops divisions, organised in the same manner as the Army's Motorised Rifle Divisions (MRD.)

    KGB Security troops: Although Soviet sources do not specify the functions of these special troops, Western analysts think that one of their main tasks are to guard the top leadership in the Kremlin, as well as key government and party buildings and officials at the republic and regional levels. Other special KGB troops were intended for counter-terrorist and counterinsurgency operations. Such troops are reportedly employed, along with the MVD's Internal Troops, to suppress public protests and disperse demonstrations. Special KGB troops also are trained for sabotage and diversionary missions abroad. They are organized in similar style to the Airborne forces, with biggest unit the brigade (circa 2.500 personnel in each.) These troops' existence is hidden from public.

    MVD Interior troops: These troops have the mission of suppressing demonstrations, revolts, riots, strikes, or other challenges to the regime that the militsiya (police) cannot contain, as well as counterbalancing the regular military. Supplementing not just the militsiya but also other MVD formations, the Interior troops might also assist in emergencies such as fighting fires. Organization is similar to that of the ground forces, albeit a lack of Army-level units or superior, though these might be organized in wartime. The 24 Interior troops divisions are organised like the Army's motor rifle divisions.

    GRU Special-purpose troops: GRU Special-purpose forces (Spetsnaz GRU) are special operations units subordinate to military counter-intelligence (GRU) and operating under Airborne Troops (VDV) uniforms. They are organized in the same style as KGB's Security troops. They form, together with KGB's Osnaz (under the Security troops), the nation's most elite forces. These troops' existence is hidden from public.

    Aeroflot: Aeroflot is the USSR's only civil airliner, and operates every non-military aircraft, from spraying planes used in agriculture to colossal intercontinental airliner aircraft. A large number of its transport fleet is part of the Strategic Air Transport Reserve.

    War List: U.S.S.R.

    IC Unit Names:
    Below are a number of war system units with their in-game Soviet designations. Some may have more than a single name; for instance, Special Forces regiments can be found as both 'Spetsnaz' and 'Osnaz' units. Some designations are obsolete due to a complete lack of units of a set type; for instance, as there are no militia brigades purchased, the Soviet Ground Forces have no 'Infantry' units. They are, however, listed in the event they are raised due to emergency or other reasons.

Duxburian Union - February 4, 2007 06:18 PM (GMT)
Official name: The Kendrelaatenzian Dominions of Duxburian Union; iunio' am dairghaxxi duxburi'

Conventional names: Duxburian Union [DU/UD/], United Dominions

Branches:
Federal Office
Office of War - Offlir am bel - Alec Naddare am Verrand

Black Tigers [army] [ABT] - 9,237,500 MP
Immortal Thunder [air force] [AFIT] - 42,870 Aircraft
Black Tide [navy] [NBT] - 2,734 Ships
Intelligence Office [intel] [DIO]- undisclosed assets

The Black Tigers:
Warmaster of the Black Tigers - Liam Kol am Kallahand

The United Dominions maintain the Black Tigers as insurance in case the air force and navy are unable to halt an invasion of the homeland. This well-trained army is perfectly suited for defending the homeland, which tends to either be rugged or metropolitan. The army places a great emphasis on mobile infantry over conventional tanks and artillery. Their name originates from wars of the past, when the army achieved notoriety for its ferocity in battle and highly distinctive uniforms.

The Immortal Thunder:
Skymaster of the Immortal Thunder - Dani'l Nero am Arael

The air force is the DU's first line of defense, as well as its first line of attack. The relatively high amount of fighter squadrons shows recognition of the importance of maintaining control over the skies, whether over an enemy nation or over the homeland. However, the Immortal Thunder's trump card is the Airborne Assault Divisions. Substantial numbers of paratroopers can be landed within a very short amount of time.

The Black Tide:
Seamaster of the Black Tide - Adric Selwyn am Linden

The Duxburian Union has a large coastline in need of protection and a two thousand year maritime tradition. The navy has long been a source of pride and a valuable asset. The navy's primary function is to act as a solid barrier against seaborne invasion, but it also has substantial offensive capabilities. The distinctive color of Duxburian ships physically shows enemies that the "Black Tide" is rolling in.

Duxburian Intelligence Office:
Spymaster of the DIO - "K" [surname+tribal name unknown]

Not much is known about the nation's intelligence network.

Special Notes about the Duxburian Military

Thanks to centuries of fighting between the Kendrevarians and Laatzenians, the modern unified military has incorporated a number of defensive tricks learned from these experiences. The security crisis between these two peoples became so severe at times that they went at great lengths to spread and cloak their military forces. Legendary Kendrevarian warmaster Liam Vaal am Nir is credited for entrenching "creative warfare" in the organization of the union's military. The United Dominions use a wide variety of means to make military units virtually invisible in the homeland, a conclusion reached when one observes that the capacity of the formal and visible bases does not even account for a quarter of the total military units. Details remain heavily classified, but urban legends and stories suggest some of these strategies. The Kendrevarian Sea Cliffs Wildlife Sanctuary, a park closed to the public and running for several hundred miles along the northern coast, is actually believed to be a cover for small submarine facilities hidden within sea caves with gates that resemble solid rock. It is also believed that the majority of army bases are "in" mountains of the Kendrevarian uplands. The popular sci-fi film "The Others" depicted the resistance fleeing from aliens into a real base called "Mt. Thunder". Analysts generally believe that stories of vast underground air hangers in the Laatzenian desert are myths only, yet a small minority have their doubts...

Self-Defence Services

The Self-Defence Services is a voluntary military service (upkeep costs are normal).

Out of Character

The Self-Defence Services war list was calculated using the spreadsheet developed by USSR. The author assumes the spreadsheet deals with upkeep costs as well, though requests permission to edit this war list if proven wrong.

The format for this war list is based on USSR's war list, though information is changed. The author will happily change the format if USSR requests so.

To call the Aurean Coastal and Border Guards "military" stretches the definition of the word. They are more police force than armed forces, working hand-in-hand with other authorities to keep the Commonwealth's borders secure and the vast waters clear of any illegal activity. The members are well trained for their jobs, but lack any true military training, and the partol vessels are very lightly armed. They can handle the arresting of a pirate ship, but would sink fast in a battle against real warships.

There is no true armed service in the Commonwealth.

Below are a number of war system units with their in-game Fritish designations. Some may have more than a single name; for instance, Special Forces regiments can be found as both 'SAS' and 'Parachute Service' units. Some designations are obsolete due to a complete lack of units of a set type; for instance, as there are no militia brigades purchased, the Fritish Ground Forces have no 'Infantry' units. They are, however, listed in the event they are raised due to emergency or other reasons.
