The following is the basic outline for the third installment of my Rainy Day Lover series as it appears in my notebook, side notes and all. This is by no mean the final result as I will be writing the final work scene by scene based of the contents of this outline. So without further ado…

(Untitled) story 3 of 5

Takes place nearly 2 years after Lover’s Revealed. Tenchi is nearly finished with his second year at Tokyo University.

Since becoming involved with Kiyone both her and Mihoshi have moved back into the Misaki household and into their old room. They continue their work with the GP and now only work part-time on earth. (They no longer have to worry about supporting an apartment anymore.) Ayeka and Sasami still perform their usual daily routines such as chores, which thanks to Sasami Ryoko is finally taking a bigger part in. With more of Tenchi’s time consumed with school she also helps with his shrine duties.

Washu, since hooking up with Nobiyuki, has continued to maintain her adult form, and while still spending long periods of time in her lab, no longer lives in it, spending more time with the family then before. Tenchi’s dad had given Tenchi his mother’s ring prior to the start of the story. He looks at it a few times early on recalling when his dad gave it to him, and how he wants to propose to Kiyone.

Meanwhile, after successfully completing a semi-moderate level case, the police duo received a call from command central. After being commended on a job well done, a look over the last couple years of service leads to the pair receiving a promotion from their commanding officer. The joy at this news is short lived however at the mentioning that the pair will, as part of their promotion be re-assigned to GP headquarters thus having to leave earth, and as a result needing to leave Tenchi. How she is going to tell them, as well as Tenchi, is yet to be determined…

They plan on telling the family that evening, but Kiyone tells Mihoshi no, that she wants to tell Tenchi first. So after dinner is finished Kiyone asks Tenchi to go with her on a walk outside. Thinking this is the perfect time to pop the question, he goes with her. After reaching a clearing , (possible sites are the shine, Funaho’s tree, or even a hillside overlooking the land.) a minute of silence passes. Fingering the ring box Tenchi opens his mouth only to have Kiyone speak first.

K - “Mihoshi and I were promoted today.”
T - “That’s great Kiyone. You deserve it.” Tenchi smiles at her good fortune until she turns and he sees the tears in her eyes and on her cheeks.

T - “What’s wrong?”
K - “They’re calling us back. We’re being transferred back to HQ.”
T - “You’re leaving Earth?”

Kiyone cupped a hand over her mouth and silently cried a little harder as she nodded. Tenchi said nothing as he stepped forward and pulled her gently into his arms, rubbing her back soothingly as she cried into his shoulder.

T - “Shhh… it’s all right, everything will be fine.” He continued holding her till the sobbing subsided.
K – “How? How is everything going to be alright Tenchi, what are we going to do?”
T – “I don’t know yet Kiyone, but we’ll think of something.”
K – “I’ve wanted this for so long, but now… I don’t want to lose you Tenchi.

Tenchi gently pulled Kiyone back by her elbows till he could see her face. Placing his right hand on her shoulder, he used his free hand to brush the tear streaks from her cheeks before cupping the side of her face. Kiyone calmed slightly at the small smile upon Tenchi’s face.

T – Kiyone, you’re not going to lose me, just like I’m not going to lose you. I promise… we’ll find a way.” Kiyone sighed, closing her eyes as she leaned into his touch.
K – “Okay.”
T – “C’mon lets go home, things will look better in the morning.” Shifting to her side, Tenchi slipped an arm around Kiyone’s waist as they proceeded back to the house.

It was past the midnight hour by the time the pair returned. Slipping in quietly the two made their way upstairs. Reaching the landing, Tenchi walked Kiyone to the door leading to the room shared by her and Mihoshi.

T – “Alright then, try to get some rest, and we’ll talk about this in the morning.” Kissing her once goodnight, Tenchi watched Kiyone enter her room before turning and heading towards his own room.

Taking a few minutes to use the facilities before changing into a pair of longbottoms and a gray tank top, Tenchi reached over to turn off the light, but was interrupted by a near inaudible knock on his door. Wondering who might want him at this hour, yet hazarding a guess, Tenchi was hardly surprised when he opened the door to find Kiyone standing on the other side. With her head tilted down slightly so that the bangs his her eyes, his girlfriend stood before him in a pair of cotton boxer shorts and a slightly overlarge tee hanging just over her hips. Feeling his eyes on her Kiyone held her arms at the elbows before looking up to meet his gaze.

“Kiyone?”

“I-I didn’t want to be alone, could I stay with you… just for tonight?” Seeing the normally composed and confident detective so visibly shaken and unsure worried Tenchi a little, but understood that even the strongest people could have their moments. The fact that she trusted him enough to let her walls down around him, to let him see such a vulnerable side of her made him feel special, but at the same time so much more.

“Of course,” he replied softly. Kiyone responded by sighing in relief against Tenchi’s chest. Wrapping an arm around her, he ushered Kiyone in before closing the door behind them.

The next morning everyone is gathered around the breakfast table. It’s a quiet event to start with but after the topic is broached, everyone starts talking and trying to come up with suggestions to the problem at hand. Unable to come to a solution, breakfast finished and as Ayeka and Sasami began clearing the table. Tenchi leaves with Katsuhito for training up at the shrine, Nobuyuki kisses Washu goodbye before leaving for work, Ryoko took Ryo-oke and flew out towards the fields, Mihoshi left for the Yagami, and before Kiyone could decide, Washu asked her to accompany her to her lab.

(SC)

Tenchi gets knocked on his butt while sparring with his grandfather for a third time in a short period of time. Katsuhito stops and asks if Tenchi is distracted by the situation with Kiyone. He confirms it and the two of them have a discussion in regards with what to do. Katsuhito tells Tenchi a story about his parents and how his dad turned down a job originally with his current company to work somewhere closer to his mom’s home. He got his current job after Achika’s death. Tenchi asks Katsuhito if he thinks he should quit college to stay with Kiyone if she leaves. Katsuhito responds by saying that Tenchi should think about, and consider how far he would be willing to go to stay with Kiyone, before dismissing him for the day and heading back to the shrine.

(SC)

Washu and Kiyone enter the lab. Upon entering they go to Washu’s private quarters before sitting down. Washu starts off the conversation, much like Katsuhito did with Tenchi. She talks about how obsessed she was with her lab and experiments before meeting Nobuyuki, how Kiyone was like that before meeting Tenchi, always working towards that next big promotion or advancement.

Kiyone asks if she’s supposed to just give up her promotion, possibly even her job, just to stay with Tenchi. Washu states that no, that’s not exactly the right answer. What she should do is look at her options, weigh the pros and cons of each, and finally determine what she wants, and what’s best for her, nobody else, just her. Washu gets up to leave, telling Kiyone she can use her quarters to think. As she walks away Kiyone ask Kiyone how she’ll know what the right answer is; Washu just smiles and at the risk of sounding cliché says that when all else fails, you can never go wrong by listening to your heart.

The next scene takes place a couple days later in the living room. It’s evening and both Tenchi and Kiyone are sitting on the couch together. Nether tell the other about their respective conversations prior, but both bring up the issue of what they’re going to do. Kiyone tells Tenchi that she put in a request to stay at their current post despite the promotion’s responsibility and Tenchi brings up the idea of leaving earth with her if necessary, but she shoots the idea down, protesting that she couldn’t make him leave his family for her, but he stops her saying that it’s his choice, and that he loves her, if that means having to make such a choice then he would do. Kiyone hugs him and says how happy what he’s willing to do makes her, but that they should wait until she receives a response before making any concrete decisions. Wrapped up in one another they fail to notice retreating footsteps going up the stairs.

(SC)

Kiyone and Mihoshi are aboard the Yagami and Kiyone checks her mail and, finds a negative response to her response to her request. Calling HQ, she talks to her commanding officer, asking in person for the reassignment. He denies her and tells her it’s one or the other, Kiyone pauses before telling him that they’ll be on their way back by the end of the day.

Mihoshi asks what they’re suppose to do now and Kiyone tells her to gather their things from the house, and that they will leave once ready. She asks about Tenchi, Kiyone tearfully smiles sadly and just tells her to gather their things. Mihoshi leaves as Kiyone sits in her pilots chair, hands over her face as the tears begin flowing down her cheeks.

(SC)

Short scene, Mihoshi goes to the house, runs into Sasami (?) and tells her what is happening and what they’re planning and why they need to go. Sasami (?) goes to call Tenchi; meanwhile someone slips out the door and heads towards the Yagami.

(SC)

Kiyone is still sitting in her seat when she hears the door open behind her. Thinking it’s Mihoshi, she turns to meet her only to find a very stern looking Ayeka staring at her. She questions Kiyone on what she thinks she’s doing and why in that authority toned voice of hers. After Kiyone relays the response she was given, Ayeka asks Kiyone to patch her through to HQ, and then to leave her in private.

Once alone and talking to the same officer, she asks to talk to the chief, who is Mihoshi’s grandfather. Being denied, she uses her name and position to quickly be patched through.

Initially surprised at who was calling, Chief (search for his name) demonstrates his own composure by calmly addressing the princess and asking how he can help. She states that the issue concerning his granddaughter, Kiyone, and their request to, despite the promotion, remain stationed on Earth and the adjoining solar system. Sensing that there’s more to the issue then just a simple request, he asks what the real reason for the request is, she relents and tells him about Tenchi and Kiyone, how her and Mihoshi have become part of what has become a rather extended family. Confirming Tenchi’s status as the crown prince and a number of other factors, he eventually grants the request as a favor to the royal family, but comes up with something else as the ‘official’ reason. She thanks him and leaves.

Finding Kiyone waiting outside Ayeka tells her the news and after Kiyone thanks her, they go back to the house in order to try and stop Sasami (?) from causing a panic by calling Tenchi or his dad.

(SC)

Tenchi is visiting his dad at work. He has told him about his talk with Katsuhito and is now asking him about the story regarding him and his mom. He confirms it, but states that there was more to it then that. She was willing to leave home to be with him, but he couldn’t do that to her. So he stayed with her and got a job closer to home.

Tenchi then asks Nobuyuki what he thought of him possibly leaving Earth with Kiyone if she has to go. He says that he would be proud knowing that his son would be willing to go so far to be with the woman he loves, just like he did. He also flippantly asks whether or not he’s asked Kiyone ‘the question’ yet. Nobuyuki advises him to tell her right away, before she makes a decision without knowing all the facts.

Letting the words sink in, he quickly says goodbye before excusing himself, leaving for home and the woman waiting for him. Before he leaves though, he dad tosses him an umbrella from the corner. Pointing to the gathering storm clouds outside he states that there’s suppose to be rain tonight. About an hour after he leaves, Nobuyuki gets a call from Sasami asking if Tenchi is still there, he says no, that he left a while ago. Sasami thanks him and then hangs up.

(SC)

Sasami hangs up the phone just as Kiyone and Ayeka come in thru the door. They ask whom she called. She says that she tried calling Tenchi, but that he had left almost an hour ago, heading home, and that he should be back anytime now. Kiyone hearing this runs out the door and towards the stone steps leading down the pathway to the bus stop. Sasami tries telling her to take an umbrella as the rain gently starts trickling down outside, but she is already gone.

(SC)

The scene starts a few minutes before Tenchi reaches his stop. It’s been raining steadily for a few minutes already and he’s nervously fingering the ring box, thinking of how to ask her, but not willing to put it off any longer.

Coming to his stop Tenchi steps off, throws up him umbrella and starts jogging home. Halfway there he hears his name and looks ahead to see Kiyone standing there. They pause for a second looking at one another before Kiyone starts running towards him, Tenchi follows suit shortly after. Meeting in the middle, they hug and kiss each other as the umbrella falls to the side.

Both try talking at once, Tenchi goes first telling her how he loves her, and that he’d gladly go with her wherever she might have to go. Before he can say more though, she stops him and says that she’s not going anywhere; that Mihoshi and her can stay on Earth. Tenchi says that that makes the next part even easier. She asks what that means and he responds by dropping to a knee and asking her to marry him. She says yes, and after a tender moment or two they start walking back home under the umbrella.

After the coast is clear, Ryoko pops out of the bushes nearby with a video camera having recorded it all. Looking at the last couple of minutes, she flies back to the house to share it with the other girls.
