Tao had been aching to play his violin again. Since his last chance encounter with Carmen, he hadn't seen much of the beautiful maid, and, though he wouldn't admit it to himself outright, he had begun to equate violin playing to her presence. So, as Tao wound down the Academy's halls with case in hand, dressed in his clean black dress shirt, dress pants, shoes and his belt with the silver buckle, his pace increased. Finally he arrived at the auditorium. He gently pushed open the door and to his simultaneous disappointment and relief, no one else seemed to be inside.

Tao made his way down an isle towards the stage. He set the case down on it's edge and then boosted himself up with a little bit of concentrated air. Smiling to himself, he twitched a finger towards the violin case and at once all the latches undid themselves. With another twitch, the top of the case popped open and the violin and bow soared out of it and into his waiting fingers.

He plucked the strings a little, and finding them out of tune, set to tuning them. This task completed, Tao lifted his bow and slid it over the strings in one pure low note that echoed around the chamber. He nodded to himself, satisfied. He took a formal, straight backed stance, center stage, and then he began playing. It was from Mozart's Violin Concerto no. 3. The third movement of "Strassburg". The fleet notes echoed merrily about the chamber.

Another day, another class over and done with. Lorne tucked his Alchemy book under one arm and headed down the hall, wanting to get rid of his burden before he stopped in for lunch. He had some work to do before his shift at Okeanos tonight, but not so much that he couldn't take a few minutes to wind down.

He walked past the auditorium and stopped, thinking he'd heard something. He paused outside the doorway and listened. Yes, there was definitely somebody playing in there. Something classical, by the sounds of it. Funny, he couldn't think of anything in particular scheduled for today...

His curiousity aroused, he pushed open one of the doors and stepped inside, but the place was empty... No, not quite. Despite the complete and total lack of an audience, a figure stood on stage, bow making practiced movements over the strings of a violin.

Lorne recognized the uniform first, and then the man. Tao... Tao something-or-other, whom Lorne knew from Council meetings and chance greetings in the hallway, but nowhere else. Not wanting to disturb the other, but reluctant to leave, he took a couple of side steps away from the door and leaned against the wall to listen.

Tao was quite concentrated in his playing, but he hadn't failed to notice the entry of a man into the auditorium. Still, he did not stop. The man was interested in his music, why not give him what he's there for? He put some extra gusto into his playing for the man's benefit, allowing the music to ripple delightfully through the acoustically excellent auditorium. Finally, he finished the piece with a dramatically drawn out note, coming to crescendo. Swiftly taking his bow and violin in his right hand, he bowed expansively a few times to the empty rows of seats and the man in the back. Completing this, he hopped down off the stage and made his way leisurely towards...ah...Lorne, was it?

Tao only occasionally had the chance to meet with the fellow, mostly at Council meetings. He'd never really conversed with the man before. He smiled as he approached, and lifted his free hand for a shake. "Good day to you, Lorne. How are things?"

Tao didn't stop playing or even look his way, but Lorne was sure he'd been noticed nonetheless. He didn't bother to hide his grin as he watched Tao finish up and bow solemnly to the empty seats, and took his cue by applauding enthusiastically - a gesture that wasn't entirely tongue-in-cheek. Tao's playing had sounded quite beautiful. Of course, he wasn't exactly a music critic.

He straightened as Tao approached him and shook the proffered hand. "Things are good. Same old, same old, mostly," and he shrugged as if to underscore the words.

"What about you? Were you practicing for something in particular, or," his grin broadened ever so slightly, "were you just here to bask in the adulation of the crowds?"

Tao grinned wider. "Oh certainly. From this very stage I can easily achieve worldwide acclaim."

He leaned against the back of a nearby seat. "Seriously, though, I wouldn't really call it practice. I hate practicing with a passion. It's more like a performance to myself."

Carmen was practically glowing.

A package had arrived that morning from her uncle and, along with the amazingly tedious legal documents about her shares in his casino, he had sent the girl a brand new dress; matching jewelry included of course. The gift had been fantastic, but even the note had made her smile, A mis Carmen, The medallion I had made is of Terpsichore, and the dress to match is for a modern Bailarina, to channel this muse. With a short swirling song of a laugh, the woman had instantly changed into the dress, which was merely a construction of diaphanous forest green fabric, flowing with the same impossible-ness often seen in Renaissance paintings of the Nine Muses. With the same care, Carmen had placed the small platinum medal around her neck, arraigning it delicately so the Muse was well displayed. She finished off the ensemble with earrings of platinum and bright, large chunks of malachite that looked like two giant tears and swung when she walked. She had known instantly then what she needed to do.

Flying down the flights of stairs, Carmen seemed to move as quickly and gracefully as leaves swirling away in a high wind. As she drew ever closer to the auditorium, she was sure she heard the soft, expressive voice of a single violin. But then, a crescendo. Then nothing.

Carmen pouted adorably. She had been hoping she would arrive in time for the show. Particularly if, as she had hoped, it had been that man, Tao Binter, playing. The joy of the song as well as the freedom she felt in that room when she had met him meant that the afternoon with the violinist had been one of the best the young Spaniard had experienced so far at the Academy.

Although she had slowed at the revelation she would not make the song, she had not stopped. Now, mere paces from the door, she heard voices. Two men, obviously. For a moment, she halted. Should she really proceed? At Four Points, she had learnt for the first time in her life what it was like to be in a crowd that wasnt surrounding her, at the very least wanting to be like her. Still, aside from her drink with Tania, the girl had not associated with anyone of late. She was sure that by the time she made it home to Spain her social skills would have atrophied so much that even as Carmen Sanchez she would not be welcome in social circles. An almost unthinkable occurrence.

She steeled herself. They were music types. At worst, theyd probably just ignore her. With her mind made up, Carmen walked steadily towards the door, pushing it open resolutely. Nothing worth doing was worth doing by halves. Oh! She exclaimed in mock surprise as her bright brown eyes fell onto the two men. Im sorry, I didnt realize there was anyone in here. Her wide-eyed surprised softened into a beatific smile, Oh, Master Tao, what a pleasure to see you again and: She turned to Lorne. I dont believe weve met? Carmen very poor attendance rate in classes tended to mean she didnt know that many of the other students.

Im interrupting, Carmen apologized again, Im used to finding this place empty.

ooc: *cough* This thread didn't seem to be going anywhere fast, so I'd crash biggrin.gif Hope you don't mind!

OOC: Pfft, we don't want you here. Git off my lawn!

*ahem*

Lorne turned, at first a bit startled when the female voice announced itself. If he'd been started to hear her, though, he was even more startled when he actually saw who was speaking. He stared for just a minute before he caught himself. She was right, they hadn't met. At least, he couldn't recall every seeing her before, and he was certain he would have remembered.

Quite certain.

"Lorne Dawson," he said, extending his hand. He offered her a mischevious grin. "I dunno, I think you're telling stories. You don't look like you were expecting to find this place empty." That was certainly true. She was dressed to the nines. Then again, maybe she wasn't telling stories. He could think of a number of women who didn't seem to need much of an occasion to dress up. Maybe it was just a girl thing.

OC: Good to see ya. Apologies for the late response...

IC: Tao was quite flabbergasted by the female student's sudden appearance. True, he'd partly hoped that Carmen would show up, but for it to actually happen was something else. After his brief moment of surprise, Tao smiled widely and bowed to the buxom maiden.

"Always a pleasure Miss Sanchez." He smirked and chuckled at Lorne's little joke, remembering that last time he had seen her, Carmen had been no less dressed to kill. He gestured to his violin.

"I was simply occupying myself with my violin again when Lorne here walked in not more than a few minutes ago. You're certainly not interrupting anything."

OOC: Pfft! My lawn now! And I add my apologies for lateness!

IC:
At Lorne's comment about her appearance, Carmen let out a short burst of politely exuberant laughter. She was well aware that she was dressed more for an evening out than wandering around the school, but when was she not? Carmen took his offered hand with a slight curtsy, "A self indulgence, more than anything. It was a gift and I am afraid, I just couldn't hold myself back. I have to admit, I adore excess." As if to illustrate, Carmen spun, the pellucid fabric swinging up in a bright green arc. When she came to a halt, her smile dazzling, she was then facing Tao.

She finally returned his bow, with an elegant curtsy. "Indeed," She responded to his salutation. "I am obviously but a moment to late though, if I have missed the concerto." Carmen pouted a little, she had been in the mood for a song or a dance, but that was life. The Habenera she had been singing along to before her package arrived would have to do.

"So what were you two fine young gentlemen discussing?"

"Tao's ascendence to international fame and fortune, I think," Lorne said, offering the girl a lopsided grin. She moved very gracefully. "Not much else, though. You didn't really miss much. In the way of conversation, that is."
