In an effort to revive some interest in this site I'm starting a series of surveys.
The first question is; who is your favorite Neil Gaiman character?
I think my current fave would have to be Shadow, he is just so self contained I find him facinating.

Favourite Characters Delerium. She has it all, she can make you laugh or break your heart. Barnabus is also pretty funny. I like that pic towards the end of The Kindly Ones where they find each other.
Anybody read any of Alan Moore's Top Ten? I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago and am itching to talk about it with somone

Fox in box with locks and stocks and lots of clocks Something foxy about that fox. Is that wrong?
Dawson can act? I was always more of a 'Pacey' man myself.
NG - it's a tremedous series about a police force keeping order in a city populated exclusively by superheroes.
What makes it unique (apart from Alan Moore just being braw as always) is the fact that almost every sinlge panel has famous sci-fi characters from every medium over the last 100 years skulking about in the background. It's like a radioactive Where's Wally. Kinda like old Dreamy's funeral only more so.
Highly, highly recommended.

enough about me, let's talk about ....anything There is, she's amazing and last week she became a ballroom dance champion. Things have been getting much brighter and much warmer around here, in fact, all the little sticks in the yard suddenly have delicate colorful things sticking out of them. I'm a little worried. I randomly made friends with two cell phone girls recently they abducted me the other night and dragged me to a club which turned out to be a giant video arcade for drunken college students. lots of fun, they got sloshed and I beat them at pool. Best of luck in the new job NG

welcome to springfield, colony for the jaundiced It was a sterling vacation, we couldn't follow the map, took about six wrong turns and managed to cut what should have been a four hour drive down to a two and a half one. We arrived in Springfield where disappointingly everyone was not yellow. Found the pool, stared at it, decided we weren't really pool people, found the hot tub..full of old men, decided old man soup didn't sound tasty and found a really cool restaurant in the middle of a Celtic folklore festival. Next day she danced, won, we found the hot tub again filtered out the old man hair but couldn't bring ourselves to actually climb inside, went to the fancy dinner thing. Got up ridiculously early, checked out and blared Sinatra's greatest hits the whole ride home. And sorry Ror. apparently i've made a mess of my computer, have a genius coming to look at the poor guy tomorrow so soon as i can i'll re-send them

Green doesn't suit me I am deeply envious of your out of country plans DHB, but I'll try to be happy for you I swear

I've said it before and I'll say it again; why do I have to live in a country so far from everywhere else!! Its not fair!!!
Anyway I'll live and I'm currently on a Bret Easton Ellis jag so my new non-neil fave charactor is Victor Ward... who knew a himbo could be interesting?
I really want to tell you guys about something but I'm deathly afraid of jinxing it, so just be aware that I may have something to tell you soon.
Enough ranting from me it is now time to return you to your regularly scheduled lunatic. Bu-bye now

favourite characters hello,
I am quite new to this game, so I am playing it safe by choosing a site that isn't exactly swamped. (feeling shy, even though none of you can see me). I do hope this site is still alive, because, well, some of my all time favourite characters are Neil Gaiman creations.
The topranking one is Galadriel, created by Tolkien, whom I knew, I hasten to add, long before the films were made. Galadriel has always been a favourite with me (think of that hair, mixing the colours of Telperion and Laurelin etc etc), but now she is played by Cate Blanchett, who just happens to be my favourite actress (think of 'Elizbeth' and of her great introduction for 'the Fellowship of the Ring')
A very close second is mr. Gaiman's Death. She is so cool and pretty and despite being Death, quite optimistic and funny. I like her best in the drawings for 'the kindly ones' when she comes to take Morpheus to the Sunless Lands.
Other Sandman characters I like are Nuala, Desire and the Corinthian. Eve is quite fascinating, too. I must add that I also like Hypolita Hall (despite the things she does), especially when that threeheaded serpent tells her the various meanings of her name ('Hypolita is an amazon queen, seduced by Hercules', says one head. 'Lyta, for short, means not as heavy', adds a second head. 'Hall, a place between places', concludes the third head. Would mr. Gaiman have thought of all this when he introduced us to Hypolita Hall so many pages before?)
The 'kind ladies' are also dear to me, even if it were only for this conversation (which drives my mother wild if I quote it out loud): 'where is the baby's finger?' 'I've got it here.' 'It is very small...' 'It was a very small baby!' 'Ditchdelivered?' 'And birthstrangled, just like it says in the recipe!' Hmmm, now that I type it out here I see its morbidity more clearly: usually I 'perform' it as a little show, which is perhaps disrespectful of those babies and their mothers...that might be what drives my mother wild...

character? nice meeting you. since I know neither the comicbook character, nor the actor you refer to Nothing Girl, I can hardly express an opinion. I do find, however that adaptions rarely work out. Have you seen Adaptation with Nicolas Cage and MEryl Streep? I rest my case...
Some adaptations are works of art in their own right. I am thinking mainly of The Hours here, although the book was mmuch much more... An older quite successful adaptation was Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?, with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
What really yeks me though is the adaptation of films into books. they do it generally quite lamely; 'her red dress was splendid', what are they talking about? An entire visual language is reduced to five words without any consequence at all.

adaptation I agree that MANY adaptions are shoddy and some are just completely disrepectful to the original vision of the writer. You wonder why they bought the film rights if they were only going to keep the title.
The best ones seem to be true to the spirit or feel of the novel rather than slaves to it.
Nothing annoys fans more than changing things for no reason, cutting things out for time can be ok as long as they aren't major.
You are right about film to book adaption being generally awful I avoid them on principle.

life, the universe and everything I picked up "salmon of doubt" a few days ago and 've been reading it on planes. I think everyone has one of those quite mental lists somewhere back among the dust and cobwebs of the top, i don't know, let's say five people they wish they could meet (um..mine
john lennon, Ghandi, jim henson, tim burton) and hope maybe a one day standing at baggage check "hey aren't you.."sort of thing will happen. reading the introductions to adams collection you really feel he is someone the world should miss. . ugh, so tired. One of the last segments of salmon is an interview with douglas in which he discusses his excitement about the latest attempt to get hitchhikers on screen and mentions his frustration at not being more involved in its production, it was something he was fighting for just before his heart attack. I know theres a biography of adams somewhere out there neil is the author...yet another hint at the interconncetivity of all things dirk gently might suggest who is ,at the moment, my favorite litterary character

hey baby-cake hey dhb long time no talk. I read the slamon of doubt a while ago and I have to agree it makes you realise what a loss his passing is.
My current fave charactor is currently Despair mainly because she is so cute in "At death's door." I know that cute isn't normally the first thing despair makes you think of but she and del make a great team.

work hey Nothing girl,
did it work out with the book you wrote? Did it actually get published?
Three more nights and I start work. Finally all grown up, graduated, moving out into the real world...
Well, the physical moving out will have to wait a bit, since I haven't got enough resources yet. But it will come, some day soon i hope.
I hope that your book works too!
