Well, I am a really "lazy" bitch ... so I usually don't use many sources for icons. This is an example of making own textures with one picture. Hopefully it inspires you as well.

Let's begin!

First step

Open any image you would love to make an icon from ... I took this one:

2nd step

snap yourself 3 parts of the picture background (you of course could use as texture pure but I will not do.

2B user posted image 2C user posted image 2D user posted image

3rd step for 2B

Autocontrast it -> 2Ba user posted image

Image Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast: --> Brightness +22 / Contrast +76

Desaturate it -> 2Bb user posted image

4th step for 2C

Autocontrast it -> 2Ca user posted image

Image Adjustments -> Levels Channel RGB -> Input Levels 35 / 1,41 / 83

You will get -> 2Cb user posted image

5th step for 2D

Filter -> Artistic -> Cutout -> Number of levels 8 / Edge Simplicity 6 / Edge Fidelity

gettin' -> 2Da (what would be worthy enough to be an own single texture by the way... looks cool)

6th step

Take 2Cb as base

copy and paste 2Bb in it and set it to 100 % Fill Difference ... smile.gif -> 2Ea user posted image

copy and paste 2Da in it and set it to 84% Fill Luminosity

flatten image and you will get the texture -> 2Eb user posted image

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Example

take a piece of the 2A picture of Tori Amos as base -> 2exA user posted image

flip canvas horizontal

place texture 2Eb on it and set it to: color dodge 79% Fill

flatten image - flip canvas horizontal again

take color of Tori Amos jacket and take that color for a 1pt border

finale: 2exB user posted image

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hope you liked it ... it is a simple icon cuz I didn't add any other stuff to it and I didn't sharped it ... just wanted to show you how this texture matched. Enjoy!
