The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good explanation. I see trees and cars and our neighbors houses. He replied.

OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush.

Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country my husband said.

Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend you see Saddam come out of his house with his wife, he has her by the hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her on the ground, then he starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are screaming and crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and they are afraid of their father.
You see all of this, son. What do you do?

OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations. They take your call. They listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. What do you do then son?

But Dad he killed her!! my son exclaims.

I know he did but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who youre pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children.

Well, if the police dont want to help, I will go and ask my next door neighbor to help me stop him. Our son says.

Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him, my husband says.

But Dad, I NEED help!!! I cant stop him by myself!!

OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next son?

He walks across the street to the old ladies house and breaks down her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire and then he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in the window and laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?

You have to do whats right, even if you have to do it alone, before its too late. my husband whispers. THAT scenario I just gave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq. When good men stand by and let evil happen son, THAT is the greatest atrocities in the world wont affect him. YOU MUST NEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT! EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE! First, understand the difference between Petrol and Oil. It's CRUDE OIL that is in Iraq, Petrol is produced out of Oil. Petrol is the British English word for Gas (Gasoline).

While I agree that Bush going in to Iraq was based on bullshit intelligence and shouldn't have been done without the UN officially sanctioning the operation, it still doesn't justify your so-called facts. Please show a source that backs up your opinion.

It's simple, because there are lots of guys busting their ass off to make the operation work, and all of those soldiers are volunteers, unlike in Germany where we still have the draft. There may be some sick fucks who commit crimes, like the soldiers in Abu Ghraib, or some other recent events, but that doesn't mean we should generalise. Most of those soldiers in Iraq are hard working, honourable people. I can defend my opinion and people accept it, even when they disagree, because I try not to bash and I also know of World History and a little of politics. D-AERB... well put. I think you hit on an important point. We are all entitled to our opinions which generally are much better in hind sight. Going into any conflict is risky business, as your reasons are only as good as your intelligence. I do not pretend to have the knowledge to even begin to understand all reasoning behind the latest Iraqi conflict. Was crude oil a motive behind the veil of decency? Maybe. Was decency the prime motive... and oh by the way they have tons of crude? Maybe. Was it just that Saadam was a really really bad guy, and needed to be stopped? I would hope that entered in to the equation. So... I do know this. I like the country I live in. Is it always correct? Hell no. But in the long run, we are a culture that seems willing and able to help where other countries are simply not able to. Yes, you are correct, Germany constitutionally cannot "start" a war, and I understand the reticence of Germany to support that UN initiative. Nothing wrong in that. But we have to realize that you have to take the good with the bad. I myself am a Vietnam Veteran. Did I understand it all... Nope. Still don't. I do know that I had an obligation to my country. I do not believe that as an eligible citizen, I can pick the battles I am willing to participate in. I had no problem in conscientous objectors to the war. They stood up for what they believed in. There were many facets of the military where "killing" was not a requirement, but it seems it was a crap shoot as far as what you did in the military. These are the rules. So I went. As you said, most of those soldiers are hard working, honorouble people and deserve to be treated as such. So... I served my country and fortunately lived through it. And if there is any good out of the Iraqi conflict, it is that the world community is shaking the terrorist's world. Yeah, a little 101 is required if ya wanna pipe up.
