#26470 by Bowlman & #26495 by faust1475 - Google Chrome OS News

Google held a special Chrome OS event at its headquarters in Mountain View, CA on November 19th.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/17/googl...rome-os-launch/

QUOTE
The company intends Chrome OS to boot almost instantaneously, similar to a TV experience, and in fact it currently loads in just seven seconds; system stability and security is also paramount, with an encrypted user-data section, self-healing OS and complete cloud storage for files. While there's no beta available today, Google is making the source code available for developers to download, compile and install.

#26487 by Kevin - E-Mail Could Become Obsolete

From dailymail.co.uk: http://tinyurl.com/yz7zee4

QUOTE
Researchers say e-mail could die out within 10 years. That is because fewer
younger people are using e-mail. They prefer texting, instant messaging, and
social networking sites.

#26432 by Linda - Which computer looks like the better buy?

QUOTE
My old computer is starting to sound like a plane that is ready to take off. Maybe I'll buy myself a retirement present.

Gateway Model DX4300-11 from BJ's Wholesale
http://tinyurl.com/ygfbf99

versus

ZT Affinity Model 7337Xa from Costco.com priced at $599.99 usd
http://tinyurl.com/yaqzzv4

QUOTE
The Gateway has a 2.5ghz AMD Phenom II X4 Quad-Core Processor 805, 8gb ram, 1 TB hdd, 16x DVD burner, integrated ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics, analog/digital tuner & tv capture w/ remote control.  Gigabit ethernet.

QUOTE
The ZT Affinity lacks the tv tuner/recorder w/ remote but does have a slightly faster 3ghz AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor.  It's on board graphics are a slight step down to the 3100 chipset.  HDD is 1 TB, ram is 8gb.

Both PCs have similar specs otherwise with PCI & PCIe expansion slots, the Gateway has firewire IEEE 1394. Both come with 64 bit Windows 7 and the usual trial ware bundles.

Thanks go to Rob, Joe and Hcxus for replying to that thread.

Joe suggested opening up the old pc to check for a damaged or blocked cooling fan. Check the case fans, cpu fan and power supply exhaust fan.

From the Windows Team Blog: Windows 7 sales exceeded Vista by 234%

CFH QUESTIONS FROM LLTTV MEMBERS:

#26349 by babaluscan - Could you please suggest a graphics adapter?

QUOTE
I wish I could afford the best but I need must be a miser.

I've got an open PCI-E x16 slot and I'm running Vista Home Premium in my
system/mobo, a dual core 64 Bit Pentium E5200 @ 2.5 GHZ, 6 GB RAM, a HP a6642p
system.

What would you suggest that I entertain as a choice? I've got my Win7 upgrade
disc and I would prefer to add the graphics adapter prior to installing 7 for
the purpose of enjoying Aero for the first time.

Radeon cards with DirectX 11 start in the $150 range

Search newegg.com for Geforce 9400, 9500...9800 etc to get a good idea of what
brands and models are available. Customer reviews on that site have helped me
choose items in the past whether I purchased from there or not. $50 to $100

#26369 - Poppa Rob suggests walmart.com site to store service. Search for "graphics cards" to find deals. They will ship to your local walmart for pickup.

#26341 - Clean Install Windows 7 from Upgrade Media

From Paul Thurrott at winsupersite forums

QUOTE
Put simply, the goal here is to clean install Windows 7 on a virgin, unused PC.  You can boot and run Setup with the Upgrade media for Windows 7, but when you go to activate, it won't work.

QUOTE
Thanks to Kevin Fisher and a bit of testing, I have a simple workaround that does work.

After performing the clean install, ensure that there are no Windows Updates pending that would require a system reboot. (You'll see an orange shield icon next to Shutdown in the Start Menu if this is the case).

Then, open regedit.exe with Start Menu Search and navigate to:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/

Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0".

Open the Start Menu again and type cmd to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.

In the command line window, type: slmgr /rearm

Then tap ENTER, close the command line window and reboot. When Windows 7 reboots, run the Activate Windows utility, type in your product key and activate windows.

Voila!

#26361 by Kevin: Windows 7 Upgrade Hack May Break Law

QUOTE
Some sites are explaining how to install Windows 7 upgrades on clean PCs. However, Microsoft is warning that this may be illegal. An earlier version of
Windows is required to install an upgrade legally.

CFH QUESTIONS FROM LLTTV MEMBERS:

#26160 by David- What do I need in a laptop?

QUOTE
..for my Media Studies class, I've been doing and will be doing a lot of video editing, which is hard work for any computer and (they tell me) requires serious hardware to do reasonably quickly. My current laptop (Dell Inspiron
1525) is adequate for this, sort of, mostly. The machine's been upgraded to 3 gig memory and a 360 gig hd both which seem adequate. I haven't discovered any way to upgrade -only- the Video hardware, and I suppose it's built into the motherboard and can't be upgraded.

Dell Inspiron 1525 specs: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 / 2.1 GHz , Mobile Intel GM965 Express, 667mhz memory, Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 4.0 - 1280x800 resolution.

QUOTE
How does the price for a Macbook Pro compare with the price for a PC laptop "adequate" for video editing in particular? I've been using Windows since 3.1, DOS before that. I know Macs only by reputation.

15in Macbook Pro specs: 2.53GHz or 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed; or 2.8GHz or 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB shared L2 cache

iLife ’09 (includes iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand)

15in Macbook Pros start at $1200, a comparable PC laptop (Dell E6500) costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200

---------------------------------------------------------------------

#26248 by Qevyn - Microsoft Recovers Sidekick Contact Data

QUOTE
Sidekick owners can now get some of their data back. A tool on T-Mobile's site will recover contacts. Microsoft is working on retrieving more data, such as

Major retailers—both online and off—are preparing for a Thursday the 22nd  launch of Windows 7 with a range of promotions and special offers.

#26266: Just in time for Halloween: High-tech graveyards

QUOTE
Matt Hickey at CNET wrote and article on the latest in Tokyo burials. Graves are stacked several feet high/ A robotic arm retrieves the urn containing creamated remains of a friend or loved one.  Think of how a jukebox retrieves a record,
only it's ashes.

#26268: Geeky Pumpkin Carvings for Halloween Inspiration

QUOTE
Walyou.com is ready for Halloween 2009 with a gallery of Geek inspired pumpkin carvings. Their collection features a Google Android pumpkin, Bill Gates, Steve Balmer ad Steve Jobs carvings; along with more contemporary designs like Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, and comic book characters from Marvel and DC.

Nate G. replied with a link to his Flickr page and a "Pirate Obama" stencil, much easier to carve than last year's Sarah Palin stencil. http://bit.ly/2ImWjf

Paul's Picks:

Paul's is taking this podcast off but would like everyone to know that Adam Sessler is celebrating 10 years on GameSpot TV, Extended Play, and X-Play on Oct.7th
Congrats Adam!!

Leo Laporte spent a week in Dubai where he attended and spoke at the TEDx conference. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future.

CFH QUESTIONS FROM LLTTV MEMBERS:

#26108 by Scott - Spoofing Location

QUOTE
I need to spoof my location so I can convince a Canadian website that it's OK to let me watch a Canadian TV show that I can no longer get on the south side of the border. A certain cable provider (rhymes with Bomb-blast) replaced one channel they were offering with another and I can no longer see my show.  Any suggestions?

Jimmy's Pick: #26136: Apple Software Push Installs Unnecessary Software

Blogger Ed Bott has posted an item about Apple's Software Updater pushing
unwanted software out to the public. The latest irritation was a required update
for the iPhone Configuration Utility, even though Bott has never plugged any
Apple-branded hardware into that particular system.

Apple has been pulling sneaky stunts like this for a long time. As I wrote
last year, "Once again, Apple is using its automatic update process to deliver
massive amounts of new software to users… And it's delivering this massive
payload without even a pretense of proper disclosure and without asking consent
from its users."

CFH QUESTIONS FROM LLTTV MEMBERS:

26078 Question about Calendars in Outlook 2007

Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction
about an issue I am having with setting up events in my calendar with
outlook 2007. I am using MobileMe to push events that I setup on my iPhone
or from my Mac and they are listed in Outlook in the correct calendar. But
when I set the event from outlook it doesn't save it by default where I want
it to..it typically puts it in Work and I have to drag it to the "calendar"
column where the rest of my appointments are listed. How do I get it to
default to the proper calendar and get it to bold that date in the top left
corner of the screen where it lists the next 3 months.

A Year With Google Chrome.
InformationWeek takes a look at Google's Chrome browser a year after it was
released with much fanfare, taking readers through the first year of Chrome's
life. I can't believe it's already been a year. Heck, I'm still a bit stunned
that it's already September. Where did my summer go?

http://tinyurl.com/lozy52

So is Google Chrome a success? Not if you measure it against initial
expectations in places like TechCrunch and TechDirt. It's far from a
Microsoft-killer; it hasn't even caused Microsoft to break a sweat. And it's
been a disappointment to Mac and Linux users, who are still waiting to see
versions of the software.

Facebook Makes You Smart, Twitter Makes You Dumb .

A psychologist claims that Facebook makes you smarter and Twitter makes you
dumber. I guess you'll just have to use both so they balance themselves out.

While Facebook apparently expands the working memory and therefore "enhances
intelligence" because the mind has to work in keeping up with one's 500 friends,
Twitter does not deserve such glowing praise.

Next Firefox Update to Auto-Update Flash Player.

Mozilla is rolling out an update on Tuesday that will scan for and automatically
update obsolete versions of Adobe's Flash Player. PCWorld reports that this is
the first of several updates designed to bring third-party plug-ins up to date
to reduce malicious attack vectors. I thought FF already automatically updated
plug-ins but apparently they only check extensions and add-ons, not plug-ins.

Christopher Blizzard, a Mozilla evangelist and former member of the Mozilla
Foundation's board, spelled out in greater detail just what Mozilla wants to do.
With the release of Firefox 3.6, now scheduled to ship in early November, the
browser will check for newer versions of plug-ins through the same mechanism now
used to check for updates to any installed Firefox extensions or add-ons.
