Call For Help: #31033 by Lee Ann - Dead Computer (Gateway GT5228)

QUOTE
The CPU is a gateway gt5228. It was asking for system recovery cd but I had to move the computer which meant turning it off and unplugging it. Now all that happens is I insert the cd and it makes noise and the screen stays black. In other words... I don't think it has an operating system. What can I do with it?

QUOTE
Louis Szekely, the comedian better known as Louis C.K., has declared that his experiment selling an online video with no copy-protection restrictions is a success.

In the four days after putting "Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater" for sale at $5, the stand-up comedian has made a profit of about $200,000 so far, he said in a statement yesterday. As a result, he said, he hopes all his future work will be distributed the same way.
QUOTE
Employees of big studios are illegally down loading stuff from the internet? No way! Who knows why they are downloading stuff, let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say they do it as part of an internal investigations.

Another Hollywood studio where it's not uncommon to download music, TV-shows and movies is NBC Universal. The employee(s) behind one of the IP-addresses at the Fort Lauderdale office in Florida downloaded the first season of `Game of Thrones,' some trance music, a DVD of `Cowboys and Aliens', and much more.
QUOTE
Authorities are claiming that only a few groups in China are behind most of the data thefts originating from that country. The part they didn't say is that these groups have 4.7 billion members each.

QUOTE
Kevin O. replies in #30639 "That would be four times the entire population of China, I think."
QUOTE
If you are looking for a good deal on iPad 2s, you should probably check Craigslist in San Carlos, California. If you are the cops looking for the crooks behind this crime...check Craigslist in San Carlos.

The deputies determined that the suspects slid under the jacked-up security
gate and dragged a large locked steel rack containing the 125 tablet computers through a fire exit door and onto a vehicle. Sheriff's officials said the loss to the store is estimated to be more than $100,000.

#30393: Firefox 8 Now Available

upgrade adds Twitter to the search bar and disables third-party add-ons
installed without your consent. Click below to get it now!

QUOTE
Kevin asks: After the issues of FF7, will you take the risk with 8?
QUOTE
From zdnet.co.uk: The catastrophic flooding in Thailand will lead to "a significant shortage" of hard disk drives, according to IHS iSuppli, A US-based market research company. This will cause HDD prices to rise by about 10 percent in this year's fourth quarter. However, iSuppli believes there are sufficient stockpiles to avoid any disruption in the supply of notebook PCs.
QUOTE
From usatoday.com; Adobe says it will no longer develop Flash for mobile gadgets and will focus instead on open HTML5 technology to power web video and site design. The move is a victory of sorts for Apple, whose late co-founder, Steve Jobs, railed against Flash as outdated technology and a battery hog.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Microsoft today delivered four security updates that patched four vulnerabilities in Windows, most of them affecting the newer editions of Vista and Windows 7.

Only one of the updates was marked "critical," Microsoft's most-serious threat ranking. Two of the remaining were labeled "important" and the fourth was tagged as "moderate."

30213 - Call For Help - By Kevin - Prob. w/ Links in Gmail

QUOTE
This problem started yesterday. I use Gmail in Firefox (latest version). Before yesterday, when I clicked on a link in Gmail, it would open up a new tab.
Now, it opens up a new window, which is annoying to say the least. My Firefox settings are correct ("open new windows in a new tab instead" is checked) and I did not see any relevant settings in Gmail. Suggestions?

UPDATE: The problem resolved itself. Kevin

30227 - By David - Tablets under $350 USD

QUOTE
Hello, I am apparently getting a tablet/reader as a x-mas gift from my family as they have been hinting around asking what I would like in a device.
What in the opinion of the group would be a good universal tablet under $350?

30229 - Android OS is the best option within a $350 budget.

30231 -by Bill aka ridingduo in Grand Junction, Colorado

QUOTE
The second generation Asus Transformer is due out this holiday season, but may not hit the shelves till after the New Year.

As far as (affordable) Android based tablets go, waiting for this release might be the best bet.

I know "I'm" waiting for it and will probably have a hard time keeping both cheeks planted on this fence once it finally comes out.

I just got my first Android phone a few months ago, the Motorola Triumph through Virgin Mobile (with a VERY affordable $25/mo. plan) and really look forward to this next generation tablet.

What I'm really hoping for in this new release is for the ability to connect a usb 3G dongle like the pay-per-use type Virgin Mobile offers.

Whether or not it will have that option still remains to be seen.

30257 - Samsung, Google Serve Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) - YouTube Video

http://youtube.com/watch?v=-F_ke3rxopc

QUOTE
Samsung's high-end Galaxy Nexus handset, unveiled Wednesday, is the first smartphone to run Google's latest Android operating system. Dubbed "Ice Cream Sandwich," this version will unify the tablet and smartphone versions of Google's mobile operating system. See the phone and the operating system in action in this YouTube video.

QUOTE
Government intelligence officials and some social scientists advocate setting up
a "big data" storehouse that would mine the vast information on the internet.
They say this could someday enable them to predict political crises around the
globe. Other scientists and privacy rights advocates are skeptical about the
concept.

* Introduce the panel

Steve Jobs Episode - Born Feb 24th, 1955 Died October 5th, 2011 (Age 56)

Wikipedia article on Steve Jobs

QUOTE
Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs, an American computer entrepreneur and inventor,  co-founder,  chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer.
QUOTE
Steve Jobs will be remembered as a titan of business, of course. But for those of us who struggled decades ago to learn lines of code in order to create something as elementary as a letter on a computer, Jobs will forever be associated with making modern computing simple, seamless and satisfying.

#29810 by Todd: A Linux Distro From the US Department of Defense

QUOTE
From slashdot: donadony writes "The Lightweight Portable Security distribution was created by the Software Protection Initiative under the direction of the Air Force Research Laboratory and the U.S. Department Of Defense. The idea behind it is that government workers can use a CD-ROM or USB stick to boot into a tamper proof, pristine desktop when using insecure computers such as those available in hotels or a worker's own home. The environment that it offers should be largely resistant to Internet-borne security threats such as viruses and spyware, particularly when launched from read-only media such as a CDROM. The LPS system does not mount the hard drive of the host machine, so leaves no trace of the user's activities behind."
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Yesterday saw the release of OS X Lion in Apple's Mac App Store. Apple changed the requirement for Lion upon release. It requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6. The download is over 3.5 gigabytes and retails for $29.99. Apple will offer Lion on a flash drive for $70 in August.
QUOTE
Google's search servers were bombarded with suspicious traffic. It began warning infected users with a notice on its home page on Tuesday. It is
directing them to a fix and updates for their antivirus software.

#29610: Why Facebook Is Losing U.S. Users

QUOTE
From pcmag.com: News hit the other day that Facebook may have lost about six million users in the U.S. in one month, according to Inside Facebook, a site that analyzes the social network for developers and marketers.

QUOTE
When asked about the report, a Facebook spokesman told PCMag that, "From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions. Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn't designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook. We are very pleased with our growth."
QUOTE
From The Wallstreet Journal Online: Atari, whose games have faded from prominence since their early '80s heyday, is reinventing its classic software titles—like "Pong," "Battlezone" and "Asteroids"—for new game platforms. Key targets include Apple Inc.'s iPhones and iPads and Facebook Inc.'s social-networking site.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Microsoft released 11 patches for Internet Explorer last Tuesday. Hackers are now trying to exploit one of the patched flaws. The flaw affects IEs 6-8. Those who have not patched their systems yet are vulnerable.
QUOTE
Adopting a new trend of accelerated updates with full version numbers, Mozilla has just released Firefox 5. Among the improvements is a do not track feature, a redesigned user interface, and enhanced background features such as support for CSS animations.  Mozilla is also releasing a software developers kit for Windows, Mac and Linux and a beta Add-on Builder for those interested in making add-ons for the browser.

#29511: Torvalds christens new Linux kernel 3.0

QUOTE
From theinquirer.net: What was going to become Linux 2.6.40 has, in the blink of an eye or a few clicks of Torvalds' keyboard, become Linux 3.0.0-rc1. There had been talk last year about whether the Linux kernel development team should call time on the 2.6 version of the Linux kernel, with some having suggested that 2.8 should be the next major version number. Now Torvalds has made the decision that the next major Linux kernel release will be 3.0.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Samsung has asked a judge to force Apple to turn over future product designs.  It wants to see the next iPhone and iPad. The judge recently forced Samsung to show Apple future product designs. The two companies are locked in a patent and trademark dispute.

QUOTE
Kevin asks:  Would that not be like Pepsi demanding Coke reveal to them their secret formula and then asking a judge to make it happen when they rightfully refused?

QUOTE
In #29518, Zombie agrees:  Yes, shouldn't it be tit for tat? If the judge made Samsung give Apple their plans and designs, Apple SHOULD give Samsung theirs. Fair is fair..

Message #29519: Apple Macintosh Security Update

MacDefender is FAKE antivirus software! If you use a Mac, you need to protect
yourself! Click below for free antivirus software for OS X!

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition

I combined these two stories because they are related.

#1: Criminals Stay a Step ahead of Apple
Apple has released a security update to thwart the MacDefender Trojan.
Unfortunately, the criminals were quick to respond. They released a new variant
that can slip past the update.

Link at Infoworld.com

http://v.gd/Wd62Iq

#2: Facebook Scam Spreads MacDefender
Scammers are taking advantage of the scandal surrounding Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Strauss-Kahn is the former IMF boss. A Facebook post claims to show a compromising video of Strauss-Kahn. Clicking the link takes users to a page
that attempts to install MacDefender.

QUOTE
From eweek.com: Tablets are changing the way people use computers. Tablet owners are using laptops and desktop computers less. They find tablets more convenient and they like the instant-on feature. Owners also report neglecting gaming consoles for tablets.

#29399 by Kevin: The Amazing $25 Computer

QUOTE
From bbc.co.uk: Developers have created the Raspberry Pi. It is a small computer about the size of a flash drive. It contains little more than a processor, a HDMI port, and an USB port.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Last week, AT&T rolled out broadband caps. Now, two advocacy groups want the FCC to investigate. They call AT&T's caps "aggressive" and say AT&T has no incentive to raise the caps as its network capacity grows.

#29369 by Kevin: AT&T Data Caps Kick In

QUOTE
From eweek.com: This week, AT&T started capping broadband usage. DSL customers get 150 gigabytes of data transfer per month; U-Verse subscribers get 250GB. AT&T will bill $10 extra for each 50GB overage. Users will receive alerts when they go over their monthly usage allotment..

QUOTE
Reply #29371 by Zombie:  I really don't get this, I didn't get it when Comcast cancelled my account for going over bandwidth usage, and I don't get it now.  Are we running low on bandwidth? Didn't IPv5 or whatever it is called kick in most markets by now?  I will say this, at least AT&T is sending alerts when users go over, instead of just canceling your account, deleting all your online storage pics, email accounts, etc, the way Comcast did me.

I have a computer, my wife has a computer, my kids have 2 desktops and a laptop, not counting my wife's Blueray player, 2 PS3's and an X-Box 360.  With so many apps nowadays.... Netflix, Vudu, etc... It's getting hard to NOT use a ton of bandwidth.  But really.... Are we running out of Internet bandwidth?

QUOTE
Reply #29377 by Lionel:  AT&T is one of only a few backbone service providers in the US. This means almost all the internet traffic in America will eventually traverse their lines.  They don't want to invest in there infrastructure "pipes". They would rather "rape" the end users and keep their bandwidth speeds low and prices high, than bring faster speeds and lower prices to customers.

With the advent of all these new devices they cannot handle the increased traffic without upgrading. Thus they are starting to cap users. They can't throttle the speed because its illegal so they will cap your usage and then charge you when you go over.
QUOTE
From mercurynews.com: The SETI Institute will stop scanning the skies for signs of extraterrestrial civilizations. That is because it is not getting enough government support to continue. This comes as hundreds of planets deemed potentially hospitable to life have been discovered.

Thanks to Eric and Chris Canni for contributing to the thread.

#29376: Seagate to Ship 3TB Hard Drive

QUOTE
From computerworld.com:  Seagate has unveiled a 3-terabyte hard drive. It is the first 3.5-inch drive to use 1-terabyte platters. The drive will ship within the next few months. Pricing has not been disclosed.

Call For Help: In Msg #29277 by Jamie asks: What would be the best way for a person to share files on the internet?

QUOTE
Would you recommend Dropbox, or some similar service?  A few people have asked me this question. They want to share with family & friends their photo albums, and videos, and perhaps music.

Answer: Dropbox is good, you need to run their app to use it properly. Megaupload or rapidshare work in a pinch. MS SkyDrive is great. Google Docs is another option.

#29275 by Kevin: Commodore Is Remade after 30 Years

QUOTE
From slashdot.org: You may have owned a Commodore computer 30 years ago. These computers helped popularize the PC. Now, Commodore is launching a revamped version of that awesome, old computer. It looks the same on the outside, but houses a modern computer.

#29288 by Todd: Why IE9 is better than Firefox 4 and Chrome 10

QUOTE
From infoworld.com: Microsoft's new browser takes the same minimalist approach as Chrome, then adds more intuitive, more capable features.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: Microsoft has begun offering IE9 to Vista and Windows 7 users via Windows Update. Users will need to opt to install the new browser. XP users will not be prompted to install IE9, as it does not run on XP.

#29264 by Kevin: GPS Makers Worried about Nationwide Wireless Internet

QUOTE
From myway.com: By JOELLE TESSLER

A new nationwide wireless internet network may interfere with GPS units. The new network uses a frequency that is very close to GPS systems. GPS manufacturers fear this could overwhelm the signal meant for their products.
QUOTE
From reuters.com: FCC Commissioner Michael Copps is against AT&T's bid to buy T-Mobile. He is concerned that it would give the mobile carrier too much power. If the merger were successful, AT&T would become the nation's largest mobile provider.

QUOTE
T-Mobile: In its Q&A page about the merger, the company said: “T-Mobile USA remains an independent company. The acquisition is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. We do not offer the iPhone.”
QUOTE
From businessweek.com: Dish network has won the bid to purchase Blockbuster. Dish bought the former movie rental king for $320 million. Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy last year after services like Netflix proved more popular.

As Pale Moon is based on the latest Firefox 4 code, it is possible to take
advantage of all of the latest features and enhancements that have been
included, while eliminating superfluous features that, for most people, serve
little purpose other than using up value system resources. The idea behind Pale
Moon stemmed from the fact that Firefox has been designed for maximum
compatibility with as wide a range of computers, and this includes very old
systems...

...There are two versions of Pale Moon available, each relating to different
release branches of Firefox. Pale Moon 3.6.15 is the last version to follow the
3.x branch of the Firefox release schedule, while Pale Moon 4.0 is the optimized
version of Firefox 4. There are standard, portable and experimental x64 versions
available.  Go to palemoon.org
QUOTE
From itmanagement.earthweb.com: By Bruce Byfield

Most free software users have long ago made their decision about whether they prefer the GNOME or KDE desktop. However, with the release of GNOME 3 this week, the choice requires a new answer. Now, both GNOME and KDE have versions that are radically different from those each had a few years ago.

QUOTE
In #29263, Eric replies:  I am really apprehensive about Gnome 3. I use Ubuntu which uses Gnome.  The first thing that I do after installing Ubuntu is to shut off it's visual effects which leaves me with a clean and highly customizable desktop environment. I for one am very worried about my desktop environment being screwed around with.

The folks at Gnome and KDE seem to be forgetting that most people who use Linux use it precisely because it is not Windows. Making their desktop environments more like Windows is a self defeating venture.

I would much rather see Gnome perfect their existing desktop environment than to replace it with something that is more glitzy and less useful.

#29174 by Zombie asks: Why would someone want to hide the address that a link points to?

QUOTE
I never click on a link that has been shortened... They can link to anything.  I never could understand why people would use URL shorteners (except on Twitter or other character limiting purposes).
QUOTE
From Yahoo, by Lili Ladaga: Japan has often donated when other countries have experienced disasters, such as when Hurricane Katrina impacted the United States. There are organizations that are working on relief and recovery in the Japan.

#29083 by Todd: Classifieds Wars: Craigslist, Oodle Fight Over Safety

QUOTE
From paidcontent.org: By Joseph Tartakoff - In its latest attempt to challenge Craigslist, Oodle is trying to portray the rival site as a stomping ground for criminals—and Craigslist is not pleased.  Oodle put out a report with classifieds research firm AIM Group this morning noting that 330 crimes, including 43 violent ones, were tied to interactions on Craigslist over the last year. Oodle called its rival a "cesspool of crime" and posted an infographic titled "Mayhem On Craigslist" complete with an image of a knife-wielding killer.

In response, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster (who has never minced words; see his comments on CNN reporter Amber Lyon here, for instance) calls Oodle's report a
"false (and defamatory) paid-for editorial" and defines Oodle for his blog readers "since few have heard of it." Buckmaster also notes that 300 crimes is a tiny fraction of the "BILLIONS of human interactions" he says Craigslist generates a year..
QUOTE
From teleread.com: Libraries have joined to make more than 80,000 e-books available to borrow. The massive collection is available at http://openlibrary.org/borrow  The books will all be readable in any web browser.
QUOTE
From dailytech.com: New build brings GPU acceleration, synced passwords, beefed up Javascript performance .

Internet Explorer 9 looks to make up much ground for poor previous outings by Microsoft browsers. But even as it remedies slow performance and lacking standards, IE 9 is threatened by a slick set of super-fast browsers from smaller third parties who don't happen to be named Mozilla.

Among those challengers is Google's Chrome 10, which was just released in beta form last week. Like IE 9 and Firefox 4, Chrome adds the much desire GPU hardware acceleration to Google's framework for the first time. According to Google's blog on the release:  In full screen mode, CPU usage may decrease by as much as 80%!
QUOTE
From techtree.com: On Download Tuesday, Microsoft released Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) to the masses. SP1 was released to MSDN and Technet subscribers the previous Wednesday. The Service Pack is available directly through MS Download Center or by Windows Update.  For users, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 doesn't pack any new features, but is a bunch of cumulative security updates and hot fixes.
QUOTE
From digitimes.com: If you are looking for a new notebook computer, you may be on hold for a few months. The demand for critical components is high right now, with production being diverted to the more lucrative handheld markets. It's an unfortunate turn, but it's a supply and demand scenario, with the handhelds winning this round.  Acer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) reportedly noticed the CIS supply problem at internal meetings in January, pushing HP to take supplies from SETi.
QUOTE
From usatoday.com: The Legend of Zelda is one of the most iconic game franchises. Its beloved characters Zelda and Link celebrated their 25th birthday this week. The original Legend of Zelda game was released in 1986 for Nintendo.
QUOTE
From timesofindia.com: A Chinese mother posted a nude video of her daughter online. Her intent was to find her daughter a husband. Outraged viewers called the mother shameless.

#28995: Guitar Hero Gets Scrapped

#29006 by Jamie T: A CALL FOR HELP Using an older flatbed scanner with Windows 7

QUOTE
I just tried using my Canon Canoscan LIDE 30 Scanner with my Windows 7 64 bit OS Toshiba Satellite L675D laptop, and discovered it's not compatible.
I did some research online, and some of the suggestions were to download drivers for Windows Vista, and for it to work under compatibility mode, which didn't work.
Then I thought of installing WUBI: http://wubi.sourceforge.net/ ( from their page: Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application

QUOTE
After installing, rebooting into Ubuntu, the scanner worked perfectly.
So when all else fails, use Ubuntu! Now I do have one problem: when running Ubuntu, it doesn't pick up my WiFi connection, so I have to use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. If anyone has a fix for this, please let me know.

Also: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer You can download Ubuntu Desktop Edition and run it alongside your current Windows system.

QUOTE
In Msg #29008 Kevin O. replies:  It is far more likely that Realtek has not given them any of the information needed to create the (wifi) drivers. On the whole, Linux supports more hardware than any other OS out there, but every OS has limitations in this respect. Just try getting older hardware to work in Windows 7, for instance.
QUOTE
From computerworld.com: A survey of 200 security managers reveals a growing fear of foreign cyberattacks. 60% of those surveyed said such attacks were a high threat and 30% said they had already experienced attacks from overseas groups.
QUOTE
We're not sure what this page is.  It appears to be something put together by Louisiana Tech students.  There is a short YouTube clip on the site..
QUOTE
From usatoday.com & By Adam Ostrow, Mashable: Sports Illustrated is set to release its famed swimsuit issue this week, and along with it, a robust digital strategy across a number of different platforms.  For starters, the publication is back with its Swimsuit app for iPhone, which was downloaded more than 1 million times last year. However, this year also sees an app for Android, as well as availability on iPad through SI's app (which uses a per issue pricing model) and Flipboard

#28943: 2011 Brings More Affordable Gadgets

QUOTE
From the Reuters blog:  Electronics typically become more affordable over time. The same will be true in 2011. One deal site points out 12 items that will be cheaper this year. On the list are the Kindle, iPhone, plasma HDTVs, and cameras.
QUOTE
Microsoft has just announced another security flaw. This one affects every version of Internet Explorer on every version of Windows. It revolves around Microsoft's specialized MHTML format for saving webpages. This flaw could let a scammer trick you while online. You might be presented with genuine-looking banking pages, or the scammer could hijack your e-mail.

Internet Explorer is the main browser at risk. Opera can also read MHTML files. Chrome and FireFox are immune. That is because MHTML support is a nondefault add-on. So far, there is no timetable on a permanent solution. Microsoft has released a temporary fix for the issue. It prevents MHTML files from running scripts. This should not affect most users.
QUOTE
From hamptonroads.com: New research suggests that a quarter of the world's web traffic is for pirated content. About half of this comes from peer-to-peer file sharing. The research ignored pornographic content. Researchers say adult content is murky in terms of copyright infringement.
QUOTE
From BBC.co.uk: The world is moving closer to running out of IP addresses. Now the world only has about 80 million addresses left. That is split between five geographic regions. These regions are expected to deplete their supply of IP addresses by September 2011.

QUOTE
Chris Canni replies in #28952: IPv4 is running out. IPv6 is available and ready to take over. It already
has in many countries.
