Title: Discuss Selections
Description: A place to discuss picks

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 05:12 PM (GMT)
Spears, you went with the surprise pick and took a coach in round one?!? What was the motivation behind that one?

speardefense33 - October 19, 2005 05:18 PM (GMT)
It all starts with the man on the headset. This isn't a Fantasy Football Team, this is real life. The coach is the backbone of the team. We've seen what can happen when even a team loaded with talent has a poor coach (Vikings, Rams), and we've also seen what happens when a team with mediocre talent has a great coach (Eagles, Patriots, Steelers).

Bill Cowher is a loyal, ferocious, tenacious, intense coach and he'll instill what I want in my team, a rough, nasty defense, and hard-nosed, blue-collar, lunchpale offense, along with a phenominal work-ethic and team unity.

Remember, even good talent needs direction.

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 05:21 PM (GMT)
Wow, you really put some thought into that one. Perhaps I should put some thought into my next pick. But I'm extremely happy with Peyton as my first selection. We all know the kind of player that he is, and I think that he'll be successful in just about any system. Definitely grounds to work on my passing game as a start.

Soft?

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
Soft? When was the last time Peyton Manning missed more than a game? If that. He's consistent, accurate, efficient, he's a leader and a coach on the field. He's a franchise QB with the numbers to prove it. I don't even feel that I have to defend the pick, because we all know that he's one of if not the best player(s) in the NFL.

Skorik - October 19, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
I agree with Spear, I am most likely going head coach with my first pick as well. I believe it all starts with the Coach, then it trickles down to who touches the ball the most. After the coach, then of course it is the QB since he is the only offensive player who will touch the ball on every single snap.

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 07:23 PM (GMT)
I have my coach in mind already, and I'm fairly confident that I'll be able to get him somewhere down the line. I'm going to add a few playmakers first, I think.

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 10:44 PM (GMT)
Bgeorges picked Randy Moss with his 1st overall pick. Gutsy call, now you gotta get a QB who can get the ball to him deep, right?

Matt Miller - October 19, 2005 10:48 PM (GMT)
Well, I went with the running game first and foremost. I almost went with a coach, but I feel like if I can establish the run, everything else will come into place eventually.

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 10:51 PM (GMT)
Not a bad stradegy. I'm banking on there being two or three more game-changing players around for me to pick before I designate my coaching staff. By the 5th or 6th round, my team will be drawn together nicely, I hope. :)

speardefense33 - October 19, 2005 11:25 PM (GMT)
Canton Bulldogs, classy, Matt. I shudder to think how many of the kids around here know the historical value of the team.

LT is a great starting piece. Moss is alright. Good selections all-around fellas.

#1Lionsfan - October 19, 2005 11:36 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the vivid description of your uniforms Spear. :P

I want you to take the journey with me...TAKE IT!

Alright, I'll see what I can do. Time to bust out my creative and artistic side. ;)

1st football team, yadda yadda yadda

bgeorges - October 20, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
My team name rocks, and is oh so very true.

Skorik - October 20, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
DTDJ's uniforms are out of control.

How much does he save on pads since he has his players running around in hot pants?

oviedol55 - October 20, 2005 03:34 AM (GMT)
DT, I used to create the Las Vegas Gamblers in Madden all the time. They had blue and red unis as well. I was thinking about using them as my team, haha. That's extremely eerie.

Packerken - October 20, 2005 03:48 AM (GMT)
I'll have to get a good pic of my current Madden team's Uni's Dark Blue and Grey with white lettering. I use the comet logo since it's one of the team names that the commentators will actually say.

bgeorges - October 20, 2005 03:54 AM (GMT)
i was going to posts uniforms like DTDJ's, but alas, i can no longer do that

speardefense33 - October 20, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
Really nice pick, Ken. And yes, defense does win championships. Also, I love the team and location, but Freeney had played in a dome since he was 18, can he handle the terrain? I think it'll hamper his speed, my friend...thus leading to the No Orleans Malt Looters STEALING (get it?) a win from you.

Packerken - October 20, 2005 04:23 AM (GMT)
LOL. You forget that the field will be frozen most of the time, making for a hard, turf like surface.

Brady is huge. Just the guy to lead a new team to glory. Nice job AZ. Although it's tough to go wrong with your first pick. This draft will be won from round 30 on.

speardefense33 - October 20, 2005 11:07 AM (GMT)
Wow, JI went with Peppers over Charlie Weis. I was almost positive he was gonna go with the big guy.

#1Lionsfan - October 20, 2005 03:28 PM (GMT)
Damn, I was banking on Freeney being there in round 2. Guess I'll have to re-evaluate my gameplan. :P

speardefense33 - October 20, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
If Freeney isn't the best defensive player in the league, he's a hair behind Ed Reed, who went #1 overall, no way he's sticking around until the second round.

#1Lionsfan - October 20, 2005 03:44 PM (GMT)
A guy can dream right?

I do too, always.

Gotta love my unis tho :)

Skorik - October 20, 2005 04:32 PM (GMT)
wel that concludes the first round

(Cue ESPN's Exciting Draft Music when showing highlights... Okay, I couldn't find it, but I did find this catchy tune from my Playstation days: http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/index-gr.html ... Scroll down until you see Rival Schools - United By Fate, then click on Sunshine)

Winners...
Everyone.

Pulling away from the pack
The Boston Transcendentalists: Great first pick of landing not only a head coach, but a chair on the Competition Committee. The prototypical, paramount, face of the franchise

Best team name:
No Orleans Malt Looters - Crack up everytime I hear it.

Second best team name, and not a distant second... This is also a great team name, The Lambertville Arm Chair Warriors. Sounds like a Fantasy Draft team name, but still pretty good.

And Ovie, Monte Kiffin doesn't look too happy to be your head coach. He was getting millions for half the work he will have to do now, now he has to pay attention to the offense.

WHAT? OFFENSE?!

#1Lionsfan - October 20, 2005 06:29 PM (GMT)
Monty can't be a head coach. Only a Defensive Coordinator. Check the rules Oviedol. :(

Edit: Sorry, I was the one who misread the rules. :P

Matt Miller - October 20, 2005 06:33 PM (GMT)
Sorry, those rules are vague. He can be.

DTlivesonthruDJ - October 20, 2005 08:01 PM (GMT)
Do our teams city have to be in the US?

I really wanna use the Paris Hilton's, but i dunno if we can :)

Matt Miller - October 20, 2005 08:44 PM (GMT)
Go for it man.

#1Lionsfan - October 21, 2005 01:04 AM (GMT)
So, Walter Jones is off the board. DAMN YOU SLEEPER!!! He was my guy for Round 2. :P

My sentiments exactly.

Matt Miller - October 21, 2005 02:08 AM (GMT)
Remember, this is a judge of who has the best 60 players, not the best 5-6 superstars.

#1Lionsfan - October 21, 2005 03:51 PM (GMT)
Peyton and Marvin. I suppose I took Harrison because I can't see Peyton working so well with any of the other stud receivers out there. Marvin is a quite, keep to himself type who doesn't cause a lot of commotion. They've been on fire in the past, and they are the best QB/WR duo in the history of the NFL. I feel that that is the best start I could get.

Just took the first member of my coaching staff. Marty Trgovac from the Carolina Panthers.

Skorik - October 23, 2005 05:07 PM (GMT)
Look at Dick Lebeau sweat. He is a genius, but he is still in awe of the other two geniuses in the room, Al Saunders and Jeff Fisher.

I thought about tanking my team, but I just went over a rough simulation and I think I GURANTEE you I will have the best team.

Oh maaan, Sleeper just buuuuuurned Ken

#1Lionsfan - October 24, 2005 07:33 PM (GMT)
Interesting picks thus far Skorik. You've yet to take an every down playmaker, yet you have probably the best coaching and definitely the best kicking. Hmm.
