When I was 5 I had to fake naptime in kindergarten b/c I just couldn't go to sleep in the daytime ... probably warped me for life.

They say that kids are all effed-up today b/c they spend 3 times as much time in front of a TV or computer screen as they do reading printed words. There are now 2-3 generations who are more visually than reading stimulated. But if those screens are used for learning tools, why are the kids test scores lower than those of their parents on the same tests? TV is making people dumber rolleyes.gif nooooooo...... well, only someone that dumb would pay this much for digital cable -- did anyone else notice that when cable went digital, the price doubled?

I considered disconnecting my cable TV since I very rarely watch it. I've kept it mostly out of consideration for guests who might want to stop over and turn the damn thing on.

I could never sleep during naptime either. What I did was always go to the same secluded spot beside a bookcase and make up elaborate stories in my head.

I worked in a daycare my senior year of high school, had the 4 year old room. Those kids NEVER took naps, and half of the kids played with themselves. I on the other hand had trouble staying awake while the lights were out and with the calm music on. I think I fell asleep during every naptime.

Those stories often involved garden gnomes and various lewd acts.

Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann and Paul Maguire, ESPN -- How is it earthly possible to drop from half a star to none? Easy. They used to provide a teeny weeny bit of information. Now they provide none. And they contradict themselves, often from one series to the next. I don't think they're really fully aware of what they're saying.

I don't want to create a new thread just for that pathetic story so here it is:

For a buck a day, teacher let students sit out gym class

For a buck a day, teacher let students sit out gym class

Associated Press
Last update: February 16, 2006 – 12:35 PM

PENSACOLA, Fla. — A middle school gym teacher let children sit out his class if they paid him $1 a day, collecting perhaps thousands of dollars, officials said Thursday.

Terence Braxton, 28, took the payoffs between September and December and resigned after the principal learned of the scheme from a parent, authorities said.

He is being sought on bribery charges.

The charges accuse Braxton of taking about $230 from six students, but sheriff's spokesman Mike Ward said the teacher's take was probably much greater.

------------------------------------------------------------
That confirms something I read in a pretty recent book: Freakonomics by Levitt and Dubner that a bunch of teachers are cheaters: They actually caught a whole bunch of 6th grade (?) teachers in Chicago cheating on their own students standardized test so that they don't statistically have too bad of an overall score. Basically they just erased a bunch of answers and filled in the right bubbles on the scantron. Imagine the Poor kids thinking they did really well (70-80+%) and then the next grade they get a 40% because they have a non-cheating teacher...

good book, recommended

what the teachers did was horrible, however it just shows how badly they are payed. teachers salaries are now based in part on how well the students score on these standardized tests.

What a sweet idea by the teacher. If the kid isn't going to dress for gym, at least take his money so he can't go to the vending machine, and buy a snickers that he doesnt work off. Those parents should be thanking him, not be mad at him.
