Hello, there! Khappy1.gif

I seem to remember a post somewhere (perhaps by Kiri, I think?) about changing something about downloaded files that would make the game load faster and work more efficiently...  But it also sounds like something that could just kick me in the hind quarters... KBadPC.gif

Is it simple or a very long process?  Can it be done by someone with no extra software?  Does such a thing even exist?

Kiri was talking about putting everything into FAR files.  If you're pretty familiar with the folders and how the game reads them, it shouldn't be a problem... unless you're like me and the game doesn't know it shouldn't be a problem.  :\

You will have to download a FAR utility.  FAROut from Paladin's Place (www.simwardrobe.com) has a prog that will allow you to extract FAR files from the Expansion packs and also create them.  I use it, but there's a prog called FARMaker somewhere that will create them only... I think.  And if you just want to make them, no sense in cluttering up your drive with an extra meg of something you won't use.

It doesn't take too long to do, but I would recommend keeping the source folders the same (i.e. if you have a bunch of objects in your UserObjects folder, FAR them and keep those there.  My game goes nuts if I move things around.)  And the game does load much faster.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I changed my loadloop file (the music that runs while the game is loading) to a file I already had on my computer and it wouldn't play it at all...  but it seems to run faster.  Does this make sense or does it just seem faster since that weird carny music (that I initially loved) isn't looping ad nauseum?

Hope that helps.  Khappy1.gif

I read on the Sim Enhancer site (I think Ponder2.gif ) that if u have XP, the far thing doesn't help at all.  I was like, dang now I find out after all that work! KUgh.gif

You can also change your objects  to READ ONLY  in Categorizer!  That speeds up load time, too!!!

Otherwise buying more ram memory is really great.

I have found if I put the bigger files as read only this help a bit.

Hi.gif  For those who are not looking to buy more Ram in the near future the Rooke's Nest has a step-by-step guide under "Help!" entitled "How to Make Your PC Faster".  It is time consuming, but it did speed up my PC which was taking up to 30 minutes to load!  Cut my time in half:yay !  And I'm not about to give up downloading objects:lol

I also tried turning all the download files to "read-only" and didn't see any improvement.

One other site I was at (can't remember which one now:sweat ) said to catagorize all your downloads into the same categories as Sims, like Appliances, Furniture, Outdoors, etc. (I know everyone has their own way of categorizing their download folder, but however you do it whether by A, B, C... or by Site names or by Sim Categories) then in each folder (category) arrange files by "type" since that is the way the computer reads them and it should speed things up a bit.

Just FYI:D

I also recently read, don't ask me where that if you miminize your Sims screen while it is loading, it stops the music playing which helps the game load faster. Haven't tried it yet, but will the next time I play.

Added: Miminizing your game does make it load faster because it stops the music from playing which makes loading up slower.
