Title: Updating the Boys Magazine

Matt - May 13, 2009 03:02 PM (GMT)
This is most of the article that I wrote for the boys magazine. However, since the magazine will not be out by May 17th, I thought it necessary to put the article here.

QUOTE
After consulting Fr. Francisco and some subscribers to the Schoenstatt Boys Magazine recently, most agree the time has arrived to put the Schoenstatt Boys Magazine online.  If you are against this move, or simply interested in the reasons why the magazine team feels it is crucial to do within a year, please continue reading.

The first reason is the cost of postage.  As of now, stamps cost forty-three cents each (just recently raised to forty-four cents).  If you multiply that by 283 magazines, the total is $121.69 per issue; however, five are sent out a year, to make a grand total of $608.45 spent on postage alone annually!

Secondly, the program that is used to create the magazines, Microsoft Publisher, costs $80 to download.  This is not a one time fee.  There is also the cost of updating it, and with more computers needing the program, it can be quite expensive to maintain.

Finally, having the magazine online would be quite beneficial to us all in many ways.  A few examples of features on the site would include: registration forms, photo galleries (in color), articles that have no word limit, and being able to access the site at an international level.  Also, the address of the site will be simple to remember.

If you still against putting the magazine online, a meeting will be held on May 17th at the Schoenstatt Boys Basement (SBB) in Waukesha, WI to discuss this further.  While it is understandable that some cannot attend the meeting, it is important that we still hear your opinion on this matter.

Alright, it is now time to vote! Please leave your opinion below.

What format would it be? Would it be a googlegroup/site thing? or an all out site? Also, the Forum is already used for a lot of things as far as communication, and can easily have "articles" that people can even comment on.

THe postage is an issue, I admit it, but how feasible is it to expect people to go on a magazine site when a lot of people aren't even on the Forum regularly, and if they are, are already getting the information needed, plus can comment on it?

This is my suggestion then, if we are to have a site. Have it be a Forum, just like this one, but have it be run by the boys. Ryan isn't really around much, and so we don't have much authority over the actual site. If we started "Schoenstatt Boys Forum v. 2.0" we could have the Photo Gallery, a place for articles about events, one for announcements, one for discussions, much like we have already, but in a different format that we have control over. We would have to retire this site, but I think that it would be better that way.

If that was the case, and we could make sure that people knew about it and were on it/ checked it at least monthly, it would work. I would also suggest having an email list so that those who wanted to be updated about the SBY could get an email notification if an announcement was made or an event was articled.

When's the meeting on Sunday?

D.J.R.S. - May 14, 2009 12:05 AM (GMT)
Yeah....what time is the meeting?

Libera - May 14, 2009 03:46 PM (GMT)
Hey Matt, I've got Microsoft Publisher on my computer, you could use ours.

Matt - May 14, 2009 04:02 PM (GMT)
The meeting for the magazine follows the planning meeting for the summer camp on the 17th.

D.J.R.S. - May 14, 2009 04:07 PM (GMT)
There is no camp planning meeting, Matt! We had that last Sunday....and we decided that we were all set and probably won't need another meeting for the camp. ;)

Matt - May 14, 2009 04:12 PM (GMT)
wait....we did??!!! i thought it was after covenant sunday.

D.J.R.S. - May 14, 2009 04:23 PM (GMT)
Yeah...that was what was originally planned.....but if you look in the vocations retreat topic....we decided to change the meeting to last Sunday. Because of the possibility of Phil and John L. being there, and, because people like Peter Y, John Y, Peter S, etc. all said they wouldn't make it on Covenant Sunday. So.....idk, I doubt the boys would want to have another camp planning meeting.....and what would we talk about too? I think we should just stick with a boys mag. meeting...and if issues about the camp come up....then we can obviously discuss those too. Or just combine and say its a CP and boys mag. meeting. Geez....idk!

:D

[Edit] wow. My 400th post! :o  ;) :D B)

Actually, as i've stated before, we have Publisher on our computer too...but that doesn't affect the postage issue

Guest - May 14, 2009 08:14 PM (GMT)
yes, but it does help in the short term anyways. we are still waiting on Phil's article. i should probably email him.
