Title: Force Z
Description: progress

Loo CK - June 17, 2008 10:02 AM (GMT)
Before transfering this to the Malaya section, these are some progress pics of the class E destroyers from Tamiya's 700 scale collection set. This baby measures 5 plus inches long, and its without rigging and decal plus final weathering to bring in the finer scale marks. Will need the full fleet to move on to that.

Comments welcomed.

Gorgeous finish! Like the weathering very much

rtfoe - June 18, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
Very nice Loo.

Your painting and weathering makes this look like a 1/72nd scale ship up close.
In normal cases 1/700 has this thick and squarish blocks for detail. Your painting skills sure has hidden this and brought the kit up a notch or two to the level of Pit-Road. Good show.

If you want to go further, some rope, hoses and crates struned on the decks will make the clutter more akin to the crampness of destroyers.

Richard.

Loo CK - June 18, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
Many thanks for the compliments guys,
Surprisingly, this kit came together rather quickly except I slowed it down by not painting the parts before assembly.
I think it would be a lot faster to do that. Being a project I planned for this year's Merdeka exhibition, I will not put too much superdetailing into it, but only add PE rails and rigging to all the ships.
Another POW, Repulse, and 2 more destroyers to go!

masterqq - June 19, 2008 01:44 AM (GMT)
wow....very nice..

I want to learn how to attach the PE Rails and rigging... maybe I can contribute a single E class Destroyer too...

enghui - June 19, 2008 01:50 AM (GMT)
I love it, it looks so real, not too exasurated and not too flat.
One day you have to show/tell me how to fit PE rails.
Until then ,keep it rail

Loo CK - June 20, 2008 04:27 AM (GMT)
Thomas and EngHui,

gracias.

No real secret with the CA glue on PE. I use a fine wire to apply small dots on the areas to be glued together. Just make sure the drops are really tiny and the glue is FRESH! ( and I do not mean with the ladies!). Fresh glue dries instantly and you need not worry about the tiny part moving out of position.
I usually connect the PE one spot at a time no matter how long the length is.
The small droplets make it easy to drag with the fine wire and also small symphatetic that you do not see smudges.

No new progress for the last few days. May just start painting the POW tonite.

Cheers!

Very nice Loo.

One question, is HMS Vampire(?) D68 missing something from the front of the bridge?

Already they look good. Can't wait for the dio.

Richard.

Loo CK - June 23, 2008 11:43 AM (GMT)
Rich,
only the anchors and half the rails with a flat coat. No flag pole there.

Loo CK - July 9, 2008 07:43 AM (GMT)
minor updates, now on the Repulse

next to the POW in black undercoat. Most of the basecoat for the Repulse is done with a first wash of the timber deck in oils.

the smaller parts are being painted first before attachment to the hull

you can see some paint progress for the POW which will be mainly by free hand

last peek.

I will need to burn the midnight oil this week to complete them before moving on to the British retreat dio involving a backdated Bren Gun carrier.

c&c very much appreciated!

Towkay Loo,

As I've always hand brush my ship (I've no air brush sigh!!).... Can you tell me why do U base coat the POW black? Is it one of the priming step B4 airbrushing 700 scale ships?

CPTan

masterqq - July 9, 2008 08:34 AM (GMT)
yah.. I like to know your painting technique too, look to me like airbrush work, but how you mask it .. paint is in sub assembly or what... need to learn lah.. :P :P

Loo CK - July 9, 2008 08:39 AM (GMT)
CP,
I have always used black as a base coat especially for models which are smaller in scale because it gives me a better shadow depth feel when the finish cosat is thin. Sometimes when I am lazy or if I want to create a quick shadow effect, all I need is a low pressure, dilluted spray of the airbrush to give me a shaded effect.

Thomas,
most of the surfaces are airbrushed except the hightlights. POW will be different because the camo is difficult to airbrush in 700. That will be in free hand. BTW the top deck colour is by hand. Use Vallejo. It dries very flat and even

Cheers

Fuyoh......... Loo

How come I almost missed this, huh? :o

Never realised how some skillful painting can make 1/700 destroyers look so eye-catching!!!
Really brings out the little details...

Can't wait for the POW & Repulse to be finished.... already looking good so far.

moJimbo - July 9, 2008 05:26 PM (GMT)
very very nice loo... so what's the final look? will it be a harbor scene or sea-battle scene? the pow sinking perhaps?

Loo CK - July 24, 2008 12:22 AM (GMT)
some updates as the painting have progressed a little more for the POW. Its a real pain in the proverbial donkey with no less than 7 different shades on the camo! No choice but to handpaint them with a base coat ab.
I have not decided yet to set the scene in the Singapore Harbour or in the open sea.....

Suggestions???

Most of the riggings are not done but majority of the PE rails have been added on the destroyers and Repulse.

Thanks for viewing.

Hi Loo,

My 2 cents.... on the open sea will mean a very large base as the ships in reality would be very far apart. If it's in singapore harbour...reference pictures only show POW berthed and don't know where the rest of the fleet was. But with artistic licence they could be berthed together.

Richard.

Curious - how much spacing would they keep, generally?

more than what you see here definitely if in open sea. I reckon, it would be better in a harbour scene then...

2 new pics in progress. Only oustanding work is the rigging and some rails in the POW. After that anchors on, battle colours and they are free to set sail.

See you guys in the open waters come 31 August!

Donkey? Did anyone mention donkeys? Not sure if they were marine trained and operable donkeys though but then again these were highly versatile animals. :P

Open sea vs harbour scene. Most of the open sea dios I've seen use a fair bit of artistic licence by placing the ships a wee bit closer that how they would appear in either convoy or battle formation. As for distance during convoy formation I remember reading it somewhere but as usual, old guy poor memory. At any rate I would go for open sea (with artistic licence for distance) as its more dramatic. Rippling waves, ships with tall and proud masts and flags whipping about in the wind.....Kinda of reminds me of:

"I must go down to the seas again to the lonely sea & sky,
All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.."

On the other hand if one wishes to go the realism path, then it would be the harbour but the harbour would mean much more work and some research as well as to how Singapore harbour circa WWII was laid out.

Lovely work as always.

cptan - August 7, 2008 06:44 AM (GMT)
Tawkay Loo ar....

I personally agree with Mr. Bum that possible to display Ur fleet on open sea.... Looks more dramatic lar... As Mr. Bum mentioned, U'll only have to build the sea and wave rather the complex dio of the SIngapore port.

About the distance between ships on open sea.... I manage to scout some pics... these ships doesn't "spread" very far between each other...

More picts

I reckon the distance should be further between ships if sail on rough sea...

PoohBear - August 7, 2008 07:30 AM (GMT)
Even a 100m spread between ships is going to be about 143mm in 700th. Not sure how the real formation was, but if the convoy happen to be 4 wide, the total spread is about 572mm. If it's not 4 wide, then the spacings translates lengthwise...

It's probably not that linear in practice and numbers don't tell everything but it's still a big ocean to work on.

It'd be great to see an open ocean dio.

Loo CK - August 11, 2008 06:12 AM (GMT)
This was supposed to be a harbour scene, but since time is not on my side, I did a quick one nighter dio as a temporary base.

the waves were made from neat gypsum plaster and stibbled while wet with a very wet brush and an atomizer at one hand. Did not managed to get the waves to roll smoothly but this will have to do.
It was finished with a thick layer of PVA glue and airbrushed with primary green, blue and russian early green gunze. Highlights are tamiya while with a russian green light filter. A coat of futures went one and another coat of parquest varnish is next.

Cheers

The sea got infected from too much algae, turns it green

Wah!!!

Very nice Loo. Impressive for a one nighter...imagine if you had more than one night to work on it.

The waves are just nice. They weren't always rolling. On that fateful day I think it was choppy, just like what you've done.

Might just want to add more white froth at the stern of the ships. The sides are enough.

Greenish for the sea is ok cause from the top which I've noticed on my air travels that's the color you sea. Our coast is dotted with shallows on the west but on the east there's a steep depth and quite dark.

As it is already very nice.

Richard.
