Title: Wip Hms Prince Of Wales
Description: Showcasing WIP art
lchunleo - October 18, 2010 03:27 PM (GMT)
A picture of the overall ship. Completion: 10%

A close up of the ship

Side note: Spent several hours over a few days to progress to this stage being first time putting a ship together. The difficult part is the gluing the small parts and almost lost them when putting them using my tweezer. Well think my finger is the best tweezer after all.
My plan:? To assemble the turrent and the bridge parts but will not glue them to the main deck as wanted to paint the main deck since am using brushes...
lchunleo - October 20, 2010 05:06 AM (GMT)
continue to assemble my Prince of Wales (aka PoW not Prisoner of War..:P). Manage to assembly the two funnels (with bridge) drill two holes to assemble a small turrent gun on the deck and small Pom-pom gun, turrent gun.."sweat sweat"
manage to take some photos, would upload it tonite..
My experience? The small search lights on the bridge are really hard and small to put on (almost lost them when holding with my tweezers.)..can't imagine how to paint them  perharps i really need a magnifier glass to do it...
drill two wrong holes on the deck to put the turrent gun (with two stubs), given the wrong instructions on the instructions sheet...alamak..and oso the turrent gun can't fit it correctly on the deck given the "right" holes as other things on the deck obstruct it..so no choice, cut one the "stub" leg to fit it in...and use expoy putty to patch the two wrong holes...this teaches me that i need to think carefully before putting things..instructions can be wrong too <_<
tonite, will put assemble more guns..

lchunleo,
good to see another POW in the making. I rate it as one of the most difficult ships to model in WW2 because of the erratic camo and not forgetting the colour difference between the deck floors and structural walls. Trying to paint this realistically is really murder. At 700 scale, that would be a painful murder!
From past experience, you might want to get a copy of the Kagero book which has very detailed drawings of everything including the paint scheme before sinking.
Good luck

thanks CK, you are indeed rite that the camo is one of the most erratic and challenging, indeed in pressure to give a good camo after seeing so many masterpieces work for POW in this forum. :P which i think it is good, there is a standard to match up to :D which makes this modelling even more interesting..:D agree with you totally, i am still researching how to do this camo stuff especially being new to modelling
thanks for referring me to the kagero book, will check it out..but curious, forgive me for asking this but isn't the painting camo scheme that comes with kit good enuf? mind elaborating? a bit kind of waste to buy a book just to do POW? especially mine is only a 1/700 scale..on my part, i had been collecting pictures/links but limited in numbers and clarity (most b/w color)
trying to put up my lastest development but my camera batt when dead on me...so got to get it settle...
so far, i manage to settle most of the seam lines with putty and searching the internet for POW for details (if possible to add) and other people works as reference..
oso researching for airbrush as well, though i know it may not be wise (where a brush is more affordable) and definitely not wish this is impulse buying but intending to keep up my passion in modeling.

Photos showing POW (in 80% assembled mode). All done except waiting for the east wind...the paint...

leo,
the Kagero book is very useful to complete all the riggings, stairs, and rails if you are adding in PE; and they do provide the color plates for the camo in 1941 mode.
Compared to the Tamiya diagram, there are a few areas of discrepancies. I cannot confirm which is correct though but my money will be on the Kagero drawings.

will post a bigger picture next time...
btw, if you are thinking why there are no further progress, the reason is i am busy with setting up my airbrush and diy my spray booth...
lchunleo - November 17, 2010 02:58 PM (GMT)
A tiny step....
start gluing all the completed parts to the ship assembly, and perform spraying of primer Mr Surface 1200 to it in my diy spray booth and oso to test out my spray booth as well...quite satisfied as really make a difference as i had a plastic veil to contain all the fumes in the booth for collection by the fan to expel the air out..

lchunleo - November 21, 2010 07:31 AM (GMT)
Started airbrushing...not very well done but enjoy it :D

(the crooked mast...due to sinking of the top mast..now too tightly cemented that i can't move straight without risk of breaking it..)
comments and crtiques are welcome..:D
Some questions here..
1) How to mix paint in the correct amount especially in an airbrush? i put in the paint but it seem so little so tot not enuf and put some more.. Actually wish to put a lighter color for the deck...i agar agar put the brown paint + white paint + thinner...
2) use thinner or water for acrylic paint better? thinner required?
3) it is correct to say the paint for airbrush need only to put a very little (e.g. 1/700) cos it seem i put too much that i have several leftover...that i kept spraying layer after layer.. the lines on the deck seem cover with "wet look" paint due to too much paint that some of the lines disappear under the coat of paints..so what do i do with the remaining paint if i overestimate?

Hi,
Basically when mixing paint for airbrushing, you do it separately in another container. I use old Fuji film containers, now with digital cameras they're hard to come by.
Pour enough into the spray cup. Any remainder can be stored in empty paint bottles that you can purchase at the HS.
Try not to mix straight in the airbrush cup.
Cheers,
Rocco.
