Title: Titanic Proportion: Rms Titanic
Description: "You jump, i stay on board.."
kuman - January 20, 2011 08:59 AM (GMT)
:D
To mark the day, i decided to jump right into it.. since my HM said i better build something to commemorate this day, so i did.
Hopefully i can finish this before i turn 46
Actually i was hoping to build this for the Movie Mayhem, but see how it goes.. if sempat definitely will come over for MMGB
My first ever ship in this scale (or any scale) and seriously, i'm scared.. very scared since this will also involved some PE and the intricacy of building ship is overwhelming for me...
So ship builder out there, i really need all the help in building this kit since i'll have lot of questions later.. :D
Here is the compulsory box shot.
The parts
The length of the kit compared to the Gunze bottle

...
My first question..
The instruction on STEP 4, suggested for me to start the rigging already. Should i follow it?
or just wait until i finish everything?

Thats it for now.... hope more progress soon... :D
C&C welcomed as usual guys...

I'm no ship builder but I think you should paint the parts first and the rigging needs to be tackled later when the parts are going to be glued together. No points painting the things together with the rigging and resulting that the rigging to be messed up and uneven from the paint.
You don't need to follow the instructions shown. You can always put the rigging after the ship has been assembled. Just a drop of superglue and put the thread through the hole.
Hope this helps. :)

Huyo....lagi sorang azam baru........brani ko siut
My 2 sen is that, assemble dulu. Druid is right. Keep the lobang2 free, later baru masuk rigging.
Nak buat ais batu ke? :D

@Shah..
- ada gak idea air batu tu.. hhahah tapi tengok camno... progress as she goes..
- aku bukan brani.. cuma inspired ajer ahhahaha
@Druid:
- tq for the tips.. :D so basically the deck and all the small parts need to be painted before they're put together, correct? so painting them while they still on the sprue la kan?
As for parts with PE, should fix the PE then only paint.. correct?
if dont have access to those PE-bending-machine, what else to use to lipat the PE?
will 2 steel ruler work?

Mr Engineer san: :D
the idea still playing in my mind.. :D
since i still havent glue all the major parts and i'm still thinking about the possibilities of doing so.. but for march 2011 dateline.. sempat ka? :D
got any idea for a fast light-up Titanic.. :D
if light-up is one of the option i would need to have the "light-block" paint ASAP on the hull and the rest of the structure.. :)

If you miss the Movie Mayhem, I guess you got a year and a bit to do it since the 100th anniversary is in 2012.
Looking at yours, I feel an itch to complete mine which is the old Minicraft 1/350 version that has been my WIP since 1998. Was planning to light mine (back then only thinking about light bulbs...) but lost all motivation after drilling all the port holes on the hull.
Does the Academy version have open port holes on the hull?
landyshah - January 28, 2011 03:53 AM (GMT)
Wei..mana WIP? Tgh tunggu ni . If you want lights, just switch on your room light
Mr. Engineer - January 29, 2011 10:58 AM (GMT)
March, ah?
I think can meet the deadline but we need to meet up first. You might have to bring the model so we can discuss further.
Mid February can?

- 100th anniversary ehh... but if i wait i dunno if i got the juice to start again later :D
will try to finish it this year and see... at least i got a reason if this one failed to meet the dateline hahaha
- nope.. still need to drill them out manually if want to light it up...
@landyshah:
- sabaq sabaq... tengah kalut sikit nih... nnt aku post WIP sabaq naaaaa.. :D
@Engineer:
- Mid February ek.. hmm.. let see how i only got my "VISA" approved from the HM for the MMGB event dunno if i can apply for another "VISA" interesting idea.. :D

a minuscule little update...

these crane already put together for the titanic... there's a PE for this.. but i decided to use the kit supplied crane for now and see how this would fair in my build... :D
next will proceed to pain the front deck before i glue all the small parts there..
i know next to nothing about ship parts.. so i'll make-up some words to describe the parts as i go.. :D

Mr. Engineer - January 31, 2011 01:16 PM (GMT)
Looking at the model, I regretted not getting the Ultra detailed Academy kit from Miniature Hobby last year.
Then again, my model building skills are non-existent (that's why I prefer to go electronics)
kuman - February 7, 2011 07:43 AM (GMT)
UPDATESworking with PE is not my forte.. thats why during the holidays.. i only able to PE'ed the Titanic only with the Framing...
i think total all around 50 windows (+ or -)i need to drill and put this PE on..
my eyes are numb already... and luckily there's no folding involved thus far... phew...
anyway just to update sikit...
will continue with the rest of the PE later. :D

stay tune.. :D

kuman - February 22, 2011 07:14 AM (GMT)
just a little update guys...
i completed the major build for the Titanic...
the light-block already done except for the hulls and now trying to acquire some LED...
over-ambitious me think.. but if i dont do it now i dont know when else i'll got the courage to try it..
left un-painted are the cranes, the funnels and the hulls...
these will be done this week while i wait for the LED.
the frame already ordered.. now pending the glass casing since i dont know how high this ship will be...
in the mean time enjoy the photos and i'm back at watching the Titanic movie since i just got my hand on the EXTENDED version of the movie ahhaha
really need to get the mood going.. :D
still got around 1 months to go.. need to hassle-up so that i can start on the railing once the LED is in place..

kuman - March 25, 2011 09:09 AM (GMT)
back to Titanic...
last week my compressor went kaput so all the mood for modelling kaput also.... now since i'll be getting the compressor back in a few days.. thought i share some of the progress *before* the compressor kaput...
The FunnelThe funnel already being painted with my own red + yellow mixture to make it orange...still i think i need to tone down the orange a bit more..
The Hull paintAlso since i dont have the Hull-Red paint.. need to mix the paint as suggested by the instruction.. 1 black + 2 red.. but it doesnt seem right.. so i add another portion of red.. and the result as follows...

The black portion is just a standard Flat Black.. :)
the Standi dont really fancy displaying the ship on the "peg-leg" provided with the kit.. so i'm going to spice it a little bit...
i really like those wooden block they use in dry-dock.. so i opt to use the same thing by using a real wood for it.. cut to size and use the original stand as the base.
Still i need to varnish the wood to make it more "stained". The base also need to be painted....

That should be it for now....
also the display case also done.. let see if i can complete the rigging etc by April 2nd... this will make an appearance during the SMM 2011... insyallah :D

kuman - April 27, 2011 07:22 AM (GMT)
UpdatesI'm targeting to bring this during the SMM2011 and see how this would work.. :)
ok back to the build....
and for the first time ever i do rigging for ship, using the included nylon thread in the kit...
so far so good but having a big fingers didnt help a bit... i need to use twizzers for the rigging and a bit of help from CA glue to make it stick.
i think the thread is a lil bit oversize but i think should be ok for a beginners like me.
enjoy the photos and next i'll post on the stand/base for the titanic.
Rigging near the Funnel
The ship antenna?
The rigging mess!!
thats it for now... and sorry for this didnt make for the Aneh's GB MMGB... this will come during the SMM 2011.. :)
and C&C welcomed.. :)

Huhu...rupanya projek ni masih jalan...ingat dah langgar iceberg and karam :P
Looks good bro, very neat. The benang ada sikit tebal, but its ok la...just make sure u remove any bulu-bulu on it, then should be better.

syah san...
mana boleh tenggelam... need to complete.. as already promise the GB member...
need to change the fate of theis Titanic
as for the bulu-bulu... so far i didnt see any... since this thread didnt give all those bulu-bulu... but i also lining or sapu a lil bit of CA on the thread so that it would stay stretched (i wanted to use the word "tegang" tapi nanti kena sensor pulak )
thanks for the input syah.. :)
and thanks to Poohbear san for moving this thread to here :)

Nice one bro...must be awesome once completed. ^_^
kuman - April 27, 2011 01:51 PM (GMT)
Updatesa little bit more.. :)
while waiting for the exhaustion of working with rigging to dissipate.. i work on the display pulak...
i decided to repaint the base with some gloss black after i Surfacer it.. and with a 2 coats of future to gloss it a little bit... this is what i end-up with...

seen above with the masking on where the gold lining will go...
decided to put gold lining a little bit there to break the black surface monotone (that is what i have in mind la)
i never work with Gold before especially the Arcylic gold.. so i dunno what to expect from it... this is the gold that i'll be using..

thinned with IPA and sprayed on the base....
and this is the first layer.. will put on another layer tonite and then tomorrow night will put a future on it..

and this will be in between the ship keel and the base (since i dont really like the Academy suggested method of displaying this ship on a "pedestal").. sanded and can spray with 3 coat of Anchor clear.

that's it for now.. :)

hi Wolnose san..
the rigging i used the kit supplied Nylon thread ( i think its nylon since its a little bit elastic)
below is the thread as it came with the kit.. :)

the thread if you're trying to tie a knot with it.. it will not hold... so need to use CA to make it secure..
HTH :)

The END is NEAR :D
a little bit more progress for this ship as we come closer to the May 21, 2011....
this ship will sail again on that day
a little tiny and tiring process of rigging..

not as kemas as i would expect.. but its a belasah rigging from me....
a CA helps make it stay on the mast :)
next will continue on the port side of the ship and still a few more lifeboats to glue...
stay tune for more.. :D

Looking good bro... keep it up. Can't wait to see it in SMM2011. :D
landyshah - May 10, 2011 02:48 PM (GMT)
Excellente brader.....very good effort. Like Ah Hui, now you can guild more ships!
Dont forget to matt down the paint for finishing, and give some dark washes to pick out the detail..this will bring the kit to life. Should be no rust, it sank before had chance to karat !
Let there be more ships!!
kelisapadi - May 11, 2011 02:25 AM (GMT)
Nice build bro!...
I also had a Titanic model before...misplaced it somewhere...haha :P

i also noticed that the background paper looks like an iceberg from that angle..
a bit of modification of the rigging.. will show it later... :(
the nylon thread is a bit elastic thus giving me problem now.. let see if i can try to rectify it...
then on to the wash... :)

kuman - May 18, 2011 09:59 AM (GMT)
My Titanic is now at 98% completed..
the only thing left for me to do is the decal of the titanic name and the place where it is registered - Liverpool (i think)
so this is where i'm at now..

you might noticed the glass casing at the bottom, that is for the titanic... but for SMM i would be carrying that since i think its hard to handle... so just will bring the base of the casing
and this is the fishing line that i use for the top-rigging antenna.. i have this for the a while already but only realize to use this at the last minutes.. thus now my titanic have 2 "thickness" of rigging material...

for now i'll settle with what i have and "IF" got time and energy i MIGHT change the rigging.. but for now as it is.. i think My Titanic would be sailing to SMM this weekend.. :)
phew..
