Title: The Doctors Are In
Description: Eduard 1/48 Fokker Dr.1

enghui - November 1, 2011 04:12 AM (GMT)
No, this isn't Part 2 of a certain politician's memoirs.

Yes, it's my continuing obsession of WW1 era planes.

The Fokker Dr.1 Triplane was made famous by Baron Manfred Von Richoven
aka The Red Baron. However other colorful schemes exist of this iconic aircraft.

Eduard's kit is state of the art with clever engineering to ensurethe three wings
and landing gear is in alignment.

I picked up the double kit from HHQ it has 6 options but the Kurt Korner's plane
(with the zig zag pattern) was omitted probably due to the decals for it would not
have fitted on the large decal sheet. It was replaced with Ltn Hans Weiss's
plane(white upper wing and red nose) which I selected.

I loved Korner's plane so with some internet research and since the decals included
were enough to cobble together his plane I built his plane.
Only the zig-zag pattern had to be masked,it took a whole morning but it was worth it.

Parts laid out before final assembly, after this decalling will be completed.
Still undecided whether to add pilots.

Danke Herr Kay, rigging is done, just 2 crosswires for the ailerons and brakes.

I was wondering the same thing too ^_^ It looks damn nice

enghui - November 3, 2011 03:34 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys. For the props I hand painted one with a light brown base and the other with a dark brown base. The lines were then hand painted on, dark brown on the light base and light brown on the dark base.
Citadel acrylics were used, if I made a mistake I could
a. wipe it off
b. repaint the base color on top
It took several tries to get it right. After I was satisfied,I buffed it lightly with
Tamiya Fine compound.
I had a online picture of a wooden propas a guide to copy how the lines flowed.
Some people use crayons for the lines,I didnt have any crayons on hand.

Still no flat coat heh heh.And some mistake can be seen on the pics , will have to clean up the watercolor wash.

very nice and very fast!

sky_tokyodrifter - November 3, 2011 03:44 AM (GMT)
where got mistake broder, you're pulling our legs aren't you? hahaha  . Meaning that the props were just hand painted, rubbed using tamiya wax and no clear coats on top? you have damn mad skills man. I tried handbrush before but the grains just couldn't be erased so I always optioned for clear coat on top

Oh man this is a piece of art and I'm just lovingggggggg the camera angle shot

enghui - November 3, 2011 04:43 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys, the props took sometime to get right.
If you lightly buff them with Tamiya Fine compound
It works out well.Polishing gives a more natural shine
somehow.

kwongyan - November 3, 2011 04:48 AM (GMT)
wowww...fast n furious hehh...
fantatisca ... fantabulous ... beyond words man.

enghui - November 4, 2011 04:24 AM (GMT)
Thanks kwongyan.Actually the speed is mostly due to the superb
Engineering of the Eduard kit.If manage to find one you can see its
very clever. Ya my Avatar is as botak as Vin Disel and The Rock.

Wunderbar!.
By the way, have you guys seen videos of the engine in action? The whole radial engine rotates with the prop.....

kay - November 4, 2011 10:19 AM (GMT)
EH , how do you stretch the thread to get the tension just right ?

f-4dablemodels - November 4, 2011 11:26 AM (GMT)
Looks like the Doctor's 'health advice' has us 'touching wood' or even 'knocking on wood'!

Time to pay the Doctors a visit, unless they make a house call.

Excellent work, man!

enghui - November 4, 2011 11:28 AM (GMT)
XL, yar it's a crazy machine , with the whole engine rotating.
I wonder how does the gearing works, if there are gears.

kay , after anchoring to one end, a weight is hung on
the other end , I use a medium sized clip. A dab of supa
glue is added , you can wait for a while or set it with
accelerator.

f-4dablemodels - November 22, 2011 07:00 AM (GMT)
I finally got to see the pair upfront and close.

Frankly, I think the title of the thread should be:

"Meet the Fokkers!"

enghui - November 24, 2011 04:25 AM (GMT)
Dang " Meet The Fokkers" is much better title lol
