Title: The Quick And The Slow.
Description: Sdkfz 232 and Matilda MkIII/IV
enghui - March 2, 2012 05:28 AM (GMT)
Hi guys, both are Tamiya kits.
The Matilda has been half built on the shelf for about 3 years now.
The Sdkfz is an old kit which has been revived by Tamiya with a new
sprue new figures an aluminium barrel and some PE parts.
Hardly any modification was done on the Matilda ,I just refined the vent
on the cupola.
The 232 had a lot more work done on it.The more clunky parts were replaced
with styrene and straps were made with metal tape. The mesh for the exhaust shrouds
were made using templates of the plastic parts and using Eduard's generic mesh PE.

herr kaptain..how are you going to paint a fully built kit ? :D
landyshah - March 2, 2012 07:10 AM (GMT)
One of this should be in the Armour GB thread, the other in the DAK GB thread methinks? :D
f100supersabre - March 2, 2012 07:24 AM (GMT)
Nice progress. Looks like ready for the airbrush.
rtfoe - March 2, 2012 10:49 AM (GMT)
Cool I'll keep you company with the Matilda. If yours was left for three years on the shelf then I've got one that's older by 14 years. Stopped because I lost some parts.
Thought I'd save it and rebuild the missing parts copied from another ancient kit.
Yours looks crisp and definitely more accurate.
I guess you can split the builds to those groups mentioned by Landy. The SDKFZ will be great in DAK colours if that's what you're heading for... in grey it will look hmmm... nice with the German swastika flag on it.
Cheers,
Richard

herr kay , I will paint it very very carefully, lol
lando , I would hate to split the pair.
kenny , painting together should save some time.
Rich , the new Matilda is Tamiya's kit number 300 in their armor range.
It's a lovely kit.
After gloss black and steel the gray undercoat is on.Also some toning on the gray.
The gray looks so nice .....
I m so tempted to build it gray but I think Afrka Korps yellow will be better.
ari - March 2, 2012 02:25 PM (GMT)
if done properly dark gray is actually very attractive bro, especially so if you give it a faded look, and the bottom part covered in dust,
Poland 1939 bro....
btw the 232 were never painted in dark yellow while with the DAK, they had arrived in dark grey and the crew used desert sand mixed with water to form a paste and use this paste to cover the vechicle...so its a bit messy bro, and this paste dont really last long, but again they could repeat the process all over again with ease.
aaah Matlida..this is indeed a lovely kit, the best from tamiya if i must say,
wuichong - March 2, 2012 10:40 PM (GMT)
These are my favourite AFV, your WIP looks great! Thanks for sharing.
enghui - March 3, 2012 04:15 AM (GMT)
Thanks wuichong,
Bro ari ,yes the panzer gray one is very tempting.Hopefully I ll get the paint job looking
good on this one. Will be using a mixture of pastels n airbrushing on it.
Pastels shaved off and mixed to something that looks like dark yellow.
Basically yellow plus brownish orange.Mixed it with water and slopped on to the 232.
I brushed off the excess since it looks too clumpy. An airbrush will be used to adjust the dark yellow finish.

ari - March 3, 2012 07:37 AM (GMT)
oh boy are you in trouble...hahaha.
the method you used should be ok...tapi..hahaha always the tapi....you made the mistake most would have made doing this the first time.
the mixture should be 10% pastel + 90% water or alcohol.....while still wet it doesnt look much, you must let it dry for a day...only then will you see its true colouration.
what you have done is trying to adjust the colouration and the amount of paste while its still wet...in most case you will end up with large lumps. and bright yellow colour..since you had added more paste than needed. ....sabar bro...let it dry for a day only then you add in what's needed.
try to do this with a very diluted paste bro...layer after layer.
the problem with using paste is you cannot touch the model once complete or you will leave finger prints.
i do this using enamel + oil paints....very very thin layers....sort like black wash only that the wash is not black. layer after layers later you will see the advantage of this wash.
rtfoe - March 3, 2012 08:53 AM (GMT)
Aiyoh! Dey the pastel really heavy lar. Like a 70 year old with one inch make up.
It's a good thing it can be washed down. :D As Pak Ari says in layers and thinned.
Cheers,
Richard

Matilda perhaps you can depict it as serving in action during the Borneo campaign during the closing stages of the war as opposed to depicting it during the Afrikan campaign? food for thought..
ari - March 4, 2012 04:06 AM (GMT)
matlidas used in borneo are aussie matlida bro, need quite a bit of modification and they are in overall dark green. the hardest part would be building the wire fence netting over the engine deck....
enghui - March 4, 2012 04:13 AM (GMT)
Haha guys, the "make up" is totally removable . I m still playing with the correct texture to paint it on though.I ll stick with water for now as its very forgiving.
The Matilda will definitely done in the "Caunter " scheme .
Small update, gunze dark yellow was sprayed on to give a more
even finish. Still building up the layers.

Btw Kay , I did do an aussie Matilda in Papua New Guinea. No wire mesh.
This tank in the museum has the mesh but I have seen photo without ..

Ooi. Why are the wheels so clean? Otherwise hull work A+
enghui - March 6, 2012 10:29 PM (GMT)
Ex El, I totally agree on the wheels. I base coated the thing with gloss black
and the dust doesn't want to stick. I ll tweak it again later😂
f100supersabre - March 6, 2012 11:46 PM (GMT)
Very nice.. the end product looks very good.

Matt it down. Dust won't stick to gloss.
Nice job.
