Ya its a Connie - the rest are Herks. Aku nak pkai la decal tu Bud - for my Connie AEW project - ko beli la from Max Decal - check out their website

Im writing this waiting for my flight home from Karachi. Pass by the Pakistan Air Force Museum yday, got a T33 and MIG19 on display outside. No time to go in tho :(

Lots of other military hardware seen around here and Islamabad - M48, Sherman (!), C130s, IL76, Techical pickups with MG42 mounted - dont dare to take photos tho, they are super paranoid and strict here......Islamabad airport has AA missile launchers (dont know what type) all around the taxiways!

Karachi is chaos, something like Cairo or Bombay....20 million people, many of them poor and some super rich. Two days ago there was a suicide bomb attack on a police convoy - 7 dead or something.

Glad to be coming home tho, every time after I travel in a 3rd world country, I think that whatever we complain about Malaysia, I am very grateful to live there!

landyshah - April 9, 2012 02:59 PM (GMT)
Started on the Otter - the original Hobbycraft kit is basic (as usual) and the Kitech copied moulding are thankfully pretty decent. Got hope! The interior is very basic and some detail will be added in there and elsewhere:

Some progress on the Otter - improved the interior a bit with scratch detail. The cabin floor was replaced for a flat one, as I could not find any evidence of the "step" in the reference pics. Decals used to tart up the very bare instrument panel, most details are very crude but should look ok-lah once all closed up

Major assembly done - fit not too bad overall

Overall white undercoat soon, as a base for the red and dayglo

PoohBear - April 13, 2012 12:44 PM (GMT)
wow, the center column is a huge post...no problem flying in a hurricane ^_^

landyshah - April 16, 2012 06:38 AM (GMT)
Haha, ya...kayu balak control column...suitable for antarctic flying in snowstorms. On a serious note, I was lazy to do anything about it so just left it

Paint applied, along with Argy markings. Very bright! Im not happy with the white section above the cockpit, will sand and respray methinks

landyshah - April 18, 2012 07:12 AM (GMT)
Finished I think....scratch details added on the skis, antenna etc. Some panel line picked out, weathering was very subdued as I guess these aircraft would have been kept immaculate. I think my camera white balance got confused by the dayglo!

Yaaa...more dayglo coming, wait till u see the next build ;)

landyshah - April 19, 2012 02:49 PM (GMT)
Started on the Twin Huey. This Panda kit has some well documented issues - oversize rivets/panel lines, soft/simplified detail, wrong nose profile etc.

Im not going to bother with the nose, it looks like a Huey to me, but the tank size rivets had to go:

I sanded them all right off, considering scale effect, it looks pretty smooth overall especially with bright colours. Just sanding them lower would make them bigger and "fatter" as they are tapering, so better remove totally:

Will add some detail to the interior. Some corrections as well, the armoured seats were not used in antarctica so will just use the seat cushions which are quite decent to represent normal canvas seats. Other stuff being researched

Good ref HERE on the history of US Navy VXE-6 in the Antarctic.

landyshah - May 2, 2012 03:50 PM (GMT)
Pergh....hidup lagi mamat Selam nih...welcome back :D

Some update...progress a bit slow on this one. Cabin built up, I added some detail here and there (seat belts, interior ribs, radio harness etc) but otherwise stock. Rear facing seats left off, forward facing ones folded up. Moulding overall is on the thick side.

Fuselage put together, fit is not too bad la, some sanding to be done on seam lines. Cabin roof assembled separately.

Look good so far...

Looking at the pictures of the rivets you shown... in real life it will be almost as big as a fist... can't imagine the weight of the helicopter with rivets of that size...

banderkt7 - May 3, 2012 06:16 AM (GMT)
May be this can help - Link to ARC and Antartica

landyshah - May 7, 2012 04:30 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys :D Some small update - assembled the fuselage and engine/rotor fairing. Some sanding and filling needed, especially where the cabin roof joins the fuselage.

Plastic sheet and rod was used to detail and close up the intakes and rotor gearbox areas - otherwise its daylight all the way through!

Quite slow on this build...bz at work :(

landyshah - May 10, 2012 05:31 PM (GMT)
Finished off the main assembly and got the base colour on - International Orange over a white undercoat. Its very striking! Mixed up from orange and red secukup rasa. Future coat then decals next :D

The antenna fit is different from that in the kit, these "slicks" have very few compared to the combat versions. Also the tail rotor should be mounted on the right side (not left as per instructions)

bossmonkey - May 11, 2012 01:59 AM (GMT)
Now that is loud! Hmm.. Got to start looking for these odd.. interesting subject.

enghui - May 11, 2012 04:34 AM (GMT)
Secukup rasa....

Coming along nicely big guy

an_dy - May 11, 2012 05:17 AM (GMT)
Great builds and bold finishes Landy - there is nothing like big orange subject amongst the greens, greys and browns.

Cheers

landyshah - May 22, 2012 01:48 AM (GMT)
Completed....again, panel line wash and some minimal weathering. Looking at the pics of the real things, IMHO any form of preshade/postshade will be unrealistic for these bright subjects.

Overall I think a decent kit, despite the criticisms levelled to it, can be built into a pretty good model. Anyway, its all in the hands of the modeller - apologies for any flaws from my fat hands !

Will leave this thread for now, to be continued in the future B)
