Title: Present Arms!
Description: Ceremonial Land Rover Esci 1/24
landyshah - May 10, 2012 05:40 PM (GMT)
Looking ahead for next build, something that will end up for the Merdeka GB this year:

Old Esci kit, tarted up by Italeri. I hope to finish it as a Malaysian ceremonial/parade LR such as this:

Still doing research, these vehicles were actually standard GS trucks modified by the respective units (every unit had one for parade purposes). Therefore there is no standard fit, each was done to the taste of the workshop team. However, the common thing is that they were highly polished with homemade chrome additions (hub caps, bumpers, mirrors, grab bar, flagpole etc)

Nice subject.
But to get more 'feel' of the subject's presentation, you need to have a few rows of cadets.
Hehehe... racun.. racun...

So far I can recall Tamiya's Campus Friend set and Fujimi's Driver set.
Both are quite rare nowadays but if you can get hold of one, maybe can *ahem* recast.

Air Force or Army not yet decided - the figures look nice, but MAHALL....forget it lah  Anybody got 3 1/24 standing figures for sale? ;)
Anyway, started some cutting and sticking. This old ESCI kit is quite good, the chassis detail is really nice for the age...

The one piece body is a work of art, IMHO the most accurate Land Rover in IP around

Full LHD and RHD parts are provided. They also give the windscreen frame and transparent parts, along with the standard bumper and rear crossmember.
As the parade LR's were mostly GS spec vehicles, it would be wrong to use the FFR parts. Some flash here and there, but nothing serious.

In terms of accuracy, from what I see it can tapau the Tamiya 1/35 version anytime.
enghui - May 22, 2012 03:38 PM (GMT)
Don't forget Fujimi's 1/24 Mechanics Set .
Still available n cheap on HLJ.
They are a bit bengkok la but I m sure u can modify to lurus.
I made Marty McFly from this set.I m not sure if I have the left over parts
lying around.

Landy,
If you're ordering this can tumpang and get me 3 boxes. You know lar many onlookers and one working guy.
Cheers,
Richard
landyshah - May 23, 2012 04:15 AM (GMT)
Thank Capt for the hint....
Rocco - The Fujimi quite cheap at 400 yen but plus 500 yen shipping = Rm 35 per box
But I also found
THIS - its GBP 3.00 (RM 15) per pack of 4.
You have more knowledge on figures than me, which one better? Price lebih kurang....I guess the Fujimi is less risky rite?
IF u ok, Ill order now.....

I think these two is OK for Landy's project. Sean Connery looks like Jefri Zain while bowler looks like... emmm... Prebet Tawil?
landyshah - May 23, 2012 09:25 AM (GMT)
Thanks Loo....Done lah, ill take it.... will PM you
Rocco - you need me to help u order from HLJ?
rtfoe - May 23, 2012 01:15 PM (GMT)
Landy, wait until I see what Bud has if you don't mind. Kinda pricey the shipping.
But the other option looks not bad also since I have to sculpt the baju. Don't know how good the face is.
Cheers,
Richard

Landy and Rocco,

landyshah - May 24, 2012 01:33 AM (GMT)
OK man, we wait till Bud is back. Ive arranged with Loo on the Jefri Zain and Prebet Tawil already...
Also thinking how to make chrome hubcaps nows.....
rtfoe - May 24, 2012 03:59 AM (GMT)
Landy,
Kit Kat wrappers with white glue works. You can burnish with cotton tipped tooth picks.
Save the chocolate for me...
Bud, ok. You overseeing Ah Wei's injuries ah? Sad he may miss the Olympics.
Cheers,
Richard
landyshah - May 28, 2012 03:53 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys...really appreciate the comradeship in this forum :)
In the meantime I sprayed the body shell and gave many layers of gloss....yet to reach the polishing stage. Not doing 15-step paintjob for this one haha

Have to mask and spray the chrome cappings....might try bare metal foil
The chassis and rims also done.....have to work out the chrome hubcaps

Seats and instrument panel also sorted...added a hand throttle and fire extinguisher. Low range lever (red) pulled back for slow driving during parade.

masterqq - May 29, 2012 01:08 AM (GMT)
Aiyoyo....kasi kilat kilat yah...
landyshah - May 29, 2012 04:01 PM (GMT)
Kilat mengilat....more layers of gloss and followed by polishing with Tamiya compound......I think cukup lah...real LR is never this smooth even with gloss paint

Chassis and interior fitted in. Next move on to the details - rear cargo bed will have a red carpet and I have to make some kind of chrome bar for the VIPs to hang on to, plus adding all the other chrome bits (hubcaps, body capping, bumpers, flag pole), and also scratchbuild rear steps
druid_99 - May 30, 2012 01:27 AM (GMT)
Wah... how many steps has it gone through to get the current shine?
As for the chrome hubcaps, BareMetal Foil is better. Self adhesive and thinner so that it can easily conforms to the rounded surfaces.
As for the hubcaps, I would just get a plastic sheet, cut it to size, put some plastic rod in the middle to be a guide for the convex shape of the cap and add Bondite around it before reshaping it accordingly.
f-4dablemodels - May 30, 2012 02:31 AM (GMT)
For a very brief moment I thought I saw visions of Lara Croft's short wheel base land rover. ^_^
How about it after this, Landy?
landyshah - May 30, 2012 02:35 AM (GMT)
Haha - I'd rather have Lara Croft herself :P
The best kit for that conversion would be Hobbyboss WMIK Wolf - shouldnt be too difficult I reckon.
Druid - just two step polish jer...ntg much. I might plug mould the hubcaps with plastic sheet - easier to get a consistent result maybe....
f100supersabre - May 30, 2012 09:03 AM (GMT)
Great start, landy..
I have seen one of those during the state governor's birthday...

too bad, i didn't get closer pics.. but the main focus of taking the pics then was not the vehicle..
Loo CK - May 30, 2012 04:44 PM (GMT)
Landy,
Figs at Hhq. Enjoy. The we're half built by my youngest boy.
landyshah - June 4, 2012 02:51 AM (GMT)
Thank you for the ref pics - useful to see the "railings", rear steps and the poses of the figures :D
Bit of an update - After considering the various options, I decided to make the hubcaps using plug moulding technique from clear sheet. The master was made using bondite and a tablet packet to get a consistent curvature. This method gives a smooth finish, and its also easy to produce many copies in case of errors. Trim to fit into the middle of the wheel rims, any small gaps will be filled with white glue.

In the meantime, collected Mr Bond and Mr Oddjob from HHQ (thank you to CKLoo). Mr Oddjob will be the VIP/General and Mr Bond will be the escorting officer. The driver figure will be a suitably hacked up Airfix Spitfire pilot. I have to decide on some local names for them  Uniforrms etc to be sculpted with bondite....quite scary for me :ph43r:
f-4dablemodels - June 4, 2012 03:42 AM (GMT)
Landy,
Are you sure that isn't Odd Job's distant cousin, Random Task?

Pretty cool Landy Ingenuity (as opposed to Yankee Ingenuity) with the hub caps!
rtfoe - June 4, 2012 04:06 AM (GMT)
Hub caps are cool Landy,
Ah the figures are a good challenge for you. No doubt will look the part when you're finished. The dashing uniforms will be nice to see. I remember my Dad in no. 1 dress with his red cummerbund and sword.
Cheers,
Richard
landyshah - June 6, 2012 03:15 AM (GMT)
Random Task....hmm well I guess this is the Malaysian version..Mr Semua Bikin :D
Bit of an update - made up the "railings" from plastic rod, and various bits and pieces. Red carpet in the rear was made from fine sandpaper. Rear steps etc still to go

Tested with figures earlier - this will be the poses more or less....
landyshah - June 12, 2012 01:41 AM (GMT)
Added my usual (crappy) figures - General Oddjob, Kapten Koneri and Prebet Tawil. All from 2 Arty Regiment.
The No.1 dress uniforms and songkok were sculpted with bondite, details (medals, epaulettes) with plastic sheet, belts/sash with masking tape, sword from plastic rod and sheet, thick thread for the lanyards. Prime with Mr Surfacer.

Paint them up next.....
xamel1975 - June 12, 2012 01:48 AM (GMT)
General Oddjob is very healthy, eh. Too much meeting karipap I assume :).
rtfoe - June 12, 2012 02:48 AM (GMT)
Good lar dey.
Yes general Oddjob does look like he had one kurripup to many. Tip for next time, I normally shave off as much plastic before I add on bondite for the baju.
Pretty good so far and good attempt at the No.1 dress uniform.
Cheers,
Richard
f100supersabre - June 12, 2012 03:21 AM (GMT)
Nice work on the Land rover, landy. The figures are beautiful too..
but why the kapten koneri is holding the sword on the left hand.. isn't he suppose to hold it on the right hand and the scabbard on the left hip?.... err...just asking only..
landyshah - June 12, 2012 03:55 AM (GMT)
Eh.....dayumm.....ur absolutely right haha....sword shud be right hand.....
Hehe....soli ar.....malas to repair.... :ph43r:
Ya, much to learn on figure building, painting and modification....
I should practice more....but....no interest or motivation....sorta like asking Mr B to build a ship :D
