What are the roof tiles made of?

Not many Tigers concentrate near Normandy beach. I need to check my books at home to see which battalion went there. As far as I remember, the allied Normandy invasion was unexpected that day. Even Rommel flew back to Germany to celebrate his wife's BD. The tank battalions are quickly asembled and reach the battlefield mid June.

The LSSAH SS pz.abt 101 was in Caen, especially Michael Wittmans legendary battle at Viller Bocage. Unless you are modelling a reference photo, all models can be considered fictional. But that's not the point of modelling. Check the correct battalion operated at that area and time, things should be right.

The first four top beams will be splintered at the edges and corners. The last four is sliced perpendicular to the edge of the Dio and the edges will be painted black like the backing of the houses.

The roof tiles are made of cereal carton cardboard cut to shape and glued with white glue. The top circular tiles are plastic tubes cut in half.

Thanks for checking up. I feel it's going to be fictonal as the US paratroops in the Normandy Contentine Peninsular rarely encounted Tigers but mostly Stugs and anti tank vehicles. Just like "Saving Private Ryan" altering history and sensationalising the scene with Tigers. I think I can live with that ...won't be putting this Dio in competitions unless to provoke a debate.

Started cutting the tiles and ledges. Gluing the tiles for the attic roof already.

Slow and steady. Last count 2 weevils popped out and got zapped.

Hi,

Some updates on the roof tiles for the attic. Wasn't that difficult as I had anticipated. Using my mini set square to measure and keep the angles straight helped a lot.



The irregularity of the size of the tiles makes the uneven look more convincing.



The top edge of the roof was covered with tin foil instead of the half tubing used in the opposite building to give a different finish...I noticed that each block or building was built differently and pressume that it was designed by different architects.



Another angle...I like the way the attic sticks out. I've always wanted to do attics or little protrusions from the roof tops...fun.

I have checked with my references. Pz.Abt 503 reached the battlefield at Caen about mid of July, together with some Porsche King Tigers.

Another battalion reached the battlefield early during the invasion of Normandy was the LSSAH SS.Pz.Abt 101, with newly equipped late type tigers (with steel road wheels).

It appears that only these 2 battalion were there. The first engagement (not counting fighter bomber encounter during the journey) of the SS.Pz.Abt 101 was in Viller Bocage. I have more details and photos on that, some picture also show knocked out Tigers beside buildings very similar to what you have modeled. The only "fantasy", I suppose, is that they don't have pea-looking cobblestone roads there.

I have brought the reference books to me to the office, but I lazy to scan. I'll probably take some pictures using my mobile phone and post it up. I'll do that later.

All that reference indicates the British sector of Normandy. Any idea of the American sector? Did they encounter any Tigers there?

my reference have limited information of pz.abt 503 in Normandy. Limited photos as well. Since this battalion is active in Caen and Falaise during July-August 1944, I think their main opponent is the British and Canadians.

SS.Pz.Abt 501 (LSSAH) face mostly British and a Canadian Regiment. I think the Americans' Tiger encounter happened at Operation Market Garden, Arnhem, Italy and Ardennes mainly, not Normandy.

I don't have information about SS.Pz.Abt 102 which went to Normandy as well, and I think there's another Panzer Lehr Division with some tigers operated there. No infor of those.... sorry.

I took some photos of my reference book, but they seems blur. Since it does not provide you information about US encounter, I think I save the hazzles to post it up.

At least provided information that in movie "Saving Private Ryan" Tiger encounter was not real (though the movie says is based on true story). The game "Medal of Honor: Airborne" encountering Tiger at Normandy beach is also not true.

The Tiger in "Saving Private Ryan" had all the wrong details, hatches, road wheels and tracks..... Possibly because they modified from a bulldozer or whatever.

The US encountered SS17th Panzer division in late June. They had Stugs and no Tigers. Perhaps some sticks of paratroops could have fallen close to the British sector...no can't be...they're way down south covering Utah Beach and the right flank of the invasion.

Maybe later during operation Cobra in the Bocage in between little hamlets with two storey high buildings.
