Hi all,

Just completed my second model after the mirage. It's a 2003 Dragon 1:700 Kirov Class.
Few thing I did wrong:

The color is wrong (especially for the deck)
Didn't use putty to fill up the gap
Applied too much cement as certain area

Some questions will need from all the sifus:
1. Do I cement the whole ship then only start apply paint? Or paint part by part first only then cement? I am quite confuse on how to build a ship model properly.

2. I find it very very hard to paint the window on the bridge because it so so small. Any solution for this??

Looks good for first time ship! And you choose a complicated subject too

I will try to help on your questions -

1. It depends on the design of the ship and paint scheme - for this kind of big cruiser/battleship - paint the hull and deck first, then assemble every section as subaseembly, then paint and add them to deck. smaller details should be painted separately then added on.

2. Easiest for 700 scale is to use a black wash and run it into the window frames. Wipe the excess away. This technique can be used for all other fine details on the ship. You can find out more about wash method in the tips and technique section of this forum, or there is plenty of info on the net.

Honestly, you need magnifier to build and paint 700 scale ship neatly wink.gif

Hi Shah,

Really appreciate your replies and advises. I shall try to see what black wash is all about. Thank you again!

Painting ships is different from other subjects. The decks are nearly always painted a different color from the hull, superstructure sides and other fittings. It is easier to paint the subassemblies like the superstructure, weapons and other fittings before final assembly.

As for the little windows, I find it easiest to use a fine tip black marker pen. You can find pens with tips of 0.1-0.3 mm in a good stationary or art shop.
