The 2 lads were dreading there coming challenge. The annual event of pain every student dreaded. It made people sweat until their clothes seemed to be freshly dunked in a swimming pool. It made joints ache weeks after legs, seemingly made of lead, crossed the cherished finish line. It mayed the year 7s, not used to such rigours and endeavours; cry though even the slightest thought of it. It made the majority of participants look in envy at their fellow runners, the few galloping ahead striving for perfection, with unbelieving awe and amazement.
It was there cross country
But unfortunately for them these lads weren’t some of the galloping few. No, these two were more used to the short sprints and hard tackles that there sport, football, demanded of them. They played pass or penalties, not penance running. They blocked shots, not beat records.
Alan sat on the old bench; its grafitied frame creaked under his weight. His black boots were finely polished, the result of his obsenning over his highly fashionable item of footwear. His hair was neatly gelled, his t-shirt freshly washed. He was vain, strictly adhering to the laws of fashion
Beside him was his friend, Andy. His boots were scruffy, the laces having been replaced twice. Barely adequate, but they still fitted him. His t-shirt had already been worn; his shorts had a brown stain down the side. Where it came from was a mystery to everyone but the stuffy lad clad in them. His appearance however was not the result of idleness, but of an unmaterialistic young man actively trying to have a marked difference to his companion
His nose was small and sat like a bulldogs, his stuffy brown hair was stuck up in two places like a devils horns, not because of gel but a absence of concern over brushing the greasy mess which resembled a hornets nest. There seemed to be two pairs of his dark green eyes. One pair was attentive and inquisitive, sucking every small detail into its grasp like a black hole, ever hungry for more to devour. The other absent from reality, letting time pass them by, like a little old couple’s cottage in a distant part of the country. The process of these very unlike twins interchanging could happen as fast as a light bulb goes from revealing a room in its artificial glow to letting the darkness of the unrelenting night advance.
Alex gazed into the reflection of his idea of perfection. He always carried his pocket mirror with him; his worst nightmare was letting something make his hard work in the bathroom go to waste
His light green eyes checked for any flaws or imperfections, like a corporal before a new recruit. He ran his soft, velvet like hands over his chin. His perfectly sized and shaped noise was free of spots or freckles.
“What are you doing? Were going to do a run not a fashion show” Andy should have been used to his friend, but the amazement at the overwhelming vanity never failed in producing a shock factor
“There’s gonna be girls there man. Can’t go unprepared can I?” He grinned, his dazzlingly white teeth showing
You’re going to chat up a girl despite the fact in about twenty minutes you’re going to be hot, tired and barely able to walk. That’s inconsequential”
That last word by Andy had left Alex in a state of confusion
“Incos-what? You been eating dictionaries again? Yes I was tired after last years run, but Im fitter now”
“Actually with retrospect you’re lazier now then twelve months ago.” Alex was really confused now, his friend using his complex words to play a game beyond his lexical knowledge.
A small bell rang causing twenty or so lads to wince in pain from the whining noise.
“Lets just get it out the way shall we” Andy commented, No-one liked doing PE but the tasks set for note-givers was beyond any horror in a school-boys imagination
Alex shivered with the biting cold, the wind sweeping over the miserably muddy field messing the usually attentive boys hair. His mind however was on the immediate task of keeping warm. Alex looked at him and grinned, how many times had he been told to wear long socks and a vest? The same number of times Andy had been ignored in this case.
Mr Dredrem shuffled in front of the line of lads, his pot-belly swaying side to side like an old oak tree swaying in the autumn wind.
“Right lads, it’s cross-country. You only have to do one a year so make a good go of it. You all know the price for failure to get a good time.” With these words they let off, as if one, a sigh at the thought of having to repeat the nightmarish test of endurance.
The over sized PE teacher wobbled like soft jelly as he walked to the end of the line of shivering boys wanting nothing more then to finish the ordeal.
“On your marks” Adam put his left foot forward
“Get set” he leaned forward, wanting to finish as soon as worldly possibilities would allow.
“Go!" Mr Dredrem shouted at the top of his voice, panting with the effort as his chin swayed from side to side. Adam launched himself forward in unison with the long line of runners.
Alex panted and breathed heavily, his sweat made him feel slimy and his ears were numb.
“Andy, I need a rest mate” Andy could see his friend was struggling but if a PE teacher caught them stopping they’d get a beasting
“Okay, well stop in the back of the tennis courts” The back was only 100 yards away and secluded in the interior by a think bush.
Alex crashed to his knees grasping for air. “We’ve not got long. Hurry up and get yourself together” Andy stated, slightly annoyed at his friends insistence of keeping up despite his limited stamina.
“What’s that?” Andy quizzed with a hint of worry in his voice.
“What? I can’t hear anything”
Adam was sure he heard something, a moan of pain and a muffled cry of help.
Then came the painful realisation, the sound was coming from just beyond the wooden fence, covered in a dark green moss.
His mind was full of indecision. The two offered no compromise only factors that differed wildly. Should he kick a hole in the fence and see what was going on? Or should he just get on with the run joined by a blissfully ignorant comrade?
“I don’t know what it is, but well find out.”
Alex gave a curious look but his tall powerful friend stared hard at the wooden fence, its planks rotten.
And weak.
He sighed deeply and with a powerful thump, sent his foot into the obstacle. The old structure gave way, its crumbling materials cracked.
Alex looked on in horror as Andy threw himself thought the hole.
“Better follow him” he thought to himself and jumped up after him.
The lads stumbled into the street to be met by a disturbing scene. A dark figure stood hunched over a girl of there age, the sports bag in his hand covered in a trickling red substance.
A mugger and his victim.
Alex took half a step back while Andy’s fists clenched with anger at the crime he had interrupted. The criminal gave flight, Andy gave a angry pursuit
Alex kneeled over the girl; she sat up clenching her teeth with the effort. There was a cut on her cheek but she seemed to be in shock, not pain.
“You’ll be alright, the guys gone” Alex said with a re-assuring smile
“Thanks, Im fine”
Andy threw the hunted criminal onto the brick wall.
“Drop it” he growled nodding to the bag. There was nothing he hated more then cowards, and this guy was definitely one.
The mugger, a fairly well built thug of African origin just gave a look that could kill.
Suddenly out of nowhere he lunged at Andy and swung back a long muscular arm ready to deal a blow.
Andy thought fast ducking the blow and brung his own fist to bear on his assailant’s wind-pipe.
He grabbed the scum’s longs long scraggly hair and threw the face down on a up-coming knee.
The criminal was past resistance now, a powerful head butt to the face was the blow to finish of any control of the situation he had left.
“scum bag” Andy muttered under his breath as he walked away.
