Name: Water Hemlock
Old Tealitan: Cowbane
Appearance:
Part of plant used: All parts, roots most potent
Properties: The Water Hemlock are four species of highly poisonous flowering plants that can be mistaken, like its cousin the Poison Hemlock, for parsnip. A single bite of the root (which has the highest concentration of the poison) can prove fatal. The plant affects the central nervous system, and symptoms of poisoning are usually nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain; the symptoms start about an hour after consumption, making it an effective assassination poison. The early symptoms lead to tremors and seizures, and death is rapid. The effects are delayed enough for escape, but effective enough that treatment of any Water Hemlock is usually ineffective.
Location: Any marshy area, stream banks, or wet meadows will hold Water Hemlock
