I do not recall seeing any report on this so it is worthwhile sharing with AVG users as there are so many occurrences of notifying pop up windows being fraudulent.

On September 1, 2011, AVG Free Edition 2012.0.1796 was released followed by AVG Free Edition 2012.0.1808 on September 23, 2011. As common practice AVG spreads the upgrade through its normal update service. This is done so as not to overload their servers.

My notice came today after a normal database update by announcement via an appearing popup window on the Desktop. The upgrade was 52.9MB and typical in installation. During the process there was one window offering optional AVG Search along with the AVG Toolbar so watch for it.

The upgrade required a reboot and a fresh database download of 20MB.

All and all no muss, no fuss.

DA... thanks for the headsup. Will look for the notice both here and on my mother's computer.

I tried Avast and really wasn't too impressed. Cat's old reference of Virus Bulletin pretty much rates them equal in reports. Probably a Chevy vs. Ford theory.

Do not base any conclusion or decision on any product with one negative report or one missing product submissions things unfortunately do happen.. Choose according to consistent success.

Jane,

Avast is a fine product, but it isn't perfect. Take a look at it's history.

Virus Bulletin

As you see it can only takes one false positive to fail.

Since January 0f 1998 out of the 77 tests Avast has

Passed 43
Failed 23
11 Tests not entered

If you wish to do some more vendor research try this link. You will see none of them are perfect.

Just found out the hard way that this version of AVG's e-mail scanner is not compatible with the new Thunderbird 7.0. I have my TB configured to use my Hotmail accounts so the AVG will still protect and it is no big deal. However, if I had configured TB to an ISP provided e-mail the system not be protected. So heads up.

No problem here with the ISP mail but I use the Vista Windows Mail.

Good news Bob.

So as not to confuse anyone,

If a user has Thunderbird 7.0 as their on-board e-mail client along with AVG, and they have their ISP e-mail configured through TB it will not be protected.

I do not have any information about other clients being currently effected.

For all users of TB regardless of which AV is being used, click on Tools on the Toolbar and go through the add-ons update check just like you would for Firefox.

I have isp email, but have never configured it to any email program. I dislike my isp email, so figured, it didnt even need to be on puter. I only use the gmail email right now.
