Number 8 seeds are supposed to go against number 1 seeds. That's how tournaments like this work.

Yeah, you don't want a possible top 4 series losing in the first round. That would be unfair.

But that's not giving every series a fair chance, as underrated they may be.

And if they're a possible top four series, how could they lose in the first round?

Because if you make fair match ups, it will be put up against another top 4 series and might lose. If it is put in a bad matchup, it will at least get past the first round.


To make sure the top 4 do get to the top 4, they put them quite far apart. Notice how each division is named? That is what the people who designed this contest thought would be the likely winners.

Madden would lose anyway, so it was ranked as the 8th seed. If we were to make the match-ups "fair" we would have 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6 and 7 vs 8. That would mean that the 2nd best in the division is likely to lose and the second worst is likely to win. That's not fair at all.

See why it's done now?
