Xylia’s mother was raised in a lab along the edge of Botswana on the outskirts of Muan in a small secret underground building. She and many other lionesses were being used to tests the effects of a chemical agent only known as ‘2117X2’ It had many dire effects and most died because of it. And just like the ones that fell before her Xylia’s mother suffered the same fate but not before giving birth to the strange young cub was dubbed the name Xylia in her mothers dying breath…
Xylia lived what she thought was a normal life, leading with experimentation and a dark damp cell to sleep in. Xylia wasn’t the only cub to be born this freakishly, more than thirteen others were born like her, and just like the others, their mothers died giving birth to their precious cubs.
As Xylia and the other cubs grew so did the lab to house more Lionesses to be bred and give birth to more strange cubs all of different size and colors. This illegal activity of transporting Lion prides to this location started to become noticed and things became more hectic for Xylia and the others. It didn’t bother her. One night an old Lioness sat with Xylia and told her, “there is something better out there, a life of freedom, a life of family and the hunt.” For many a night Xylia was captured by this wise one’s words bring the other cubs to listen in on these tales of freedom to run and play. It seemed too good to be true but Xylia wanted to see this life, with her own eyes.
Weeks, then months passed, Xylia grew into a teenager but like the other cub’s she was large for her age. She watched Lions come and go but she always had the old one to run too. The other lions refused to speak to her and the other cubs, all but the old one. She was Xylia’s make shift mother; she was the mother to those who didn’t have one.
One night when Xylia woke she couldn’t find the old one; she was gone, just like the other lions that came in. Xylia and the other cubs cried calling over and over for the old ones return, she never came back. Finally after days of crying, Xylia had nothing left, she couldn’t cry anymore, she looked to her ‘brothers and sisters’ and stood to take charge, if they didn’t have the old one to look after then, she would…
Xylia became like a mother to the cubs old and young, she felt there was nothing else to do but be like a mother that they needed, though inside she desperately wanted someone to take care of her…
Late one afternoon things went into chaos, a government raid! The lab was set ablaze and things were turned upside down for Xylia and her adoptive family. Cages were broken and lions set free but it didn’t take long before they were shot before finding freedom. Xylia took charge in the mess leading her family out of the lab and toward the sun. Gun’s blazed like the burning sun cries of agony ringing out into the unforgiving sky. By the time Xylia made it out there was only five cubs left of thirty she had started with. Her heart ached but all she could do was try and save the ones she had left.
Day and night they ran hunters on their heels ready to take them out of a world that didn’t want them. When Xylia finally arrived on the African savanna she only had three cubs left who had scorn in their eyes. “Why couldn't you save the others!” one cried.
“You are the oldest you should have saved them!” Said another, but this just continued with the two angry cubs, one cub stayed silent then stood and walked away, the others did so too each going it’s separate way, leaving Xylia alone.
Days and weeks went by and Xylia wondered the savanna until she stumbled upon the bodies of the three who had left her, the lay dead, flies circling their heads. Xylia died inside that day. All her effort had went in vain. The hunters convinced they got them all left and now Xylia knew now that she was truly alone.
Ever sense that day Xylia has walked alone searching for something to call her own, somewhere to say was home while inside she wished that she had died with them. Xylia became distant and her once happy face wore a scowl doing what she needed to do to survive. Taking on every challenge, fighting every fight just to prove that she was strong, she just wanted to prove it to herself. Years passed and Xylia still walks aimlessly across the savanna hunting and living alone until she stumbled upon a pride who actually reminded her of the cubs she took care of all those years ago…
She was welcomed in…
