Within the Soul Society the tail of the legendary Ichigo Kurosaki and the famous Rukia Kuchiki are told everyday. Of course the story has become stretched a bit, but that isn’t the point. The point of those two along with many of Ichigo’s friends was that they were something that not many people could understand. All gifted with extreme supernatural abilities they came to defend the world against Hollows.
They believed their time was up, their time to save the world was over, but once again they are called a pond by their once enemy the Soul Society, mainly the Soul Reapers.
A monstrous new Hollow has been brought to Earth. The worse part is that the strongest Hollow has taken the form of a Human along with many of the other hollows making it harder for them to be seen. Ichigo, Rukia, Orihime, Chad, and Uryū are all called to stop the Hollows. They will need to improve their powers, and also need the help of a few Soul Reapers as they save their world and the Soul Society from their new enemy.

Background info: Rangiku is an attractive woman with fair wavy hair. Her most distinctive feature is that she is even more well-endowed than Orihime Inoue, which both the manga and anime tend to poke fun at.

She dresses in the garb typical of shinigami, though her robes hang loose enough for her bosom to be revealed. She wears a necklace and a pink scarf over her arms. In addition, her lieutenant's armband is worn on her uniform's sash, as opposed to around the arm.

Rangiku tends to be a slacker who doesn't like paperwork and likes to drink sake a lot. Her easy-going and free-spirited personality is in sharp contrast with the serious Hitsugaya; however, she has proven time and time again her loyalty to the captain. While she also seems somewhat self-centered, she is sensitive to the feelings of others, evident when she sees the concern Hitsugaya has for Momo Hinamori, the guilt Izuru Kira shares with her when Gin Ichimaru is revealed as traitor of Soul Society, and when Orihime feels depressed about her role in Ichigo Kurosaki's life.

Little is told about Rangiku's past. She came from Rukongai and was rescued as a child by Gin Ichimaru; the two soon became friends.

It is not known how she became a shinigami or how she became lieutenant of the 10th Division. There are strong hints that she had been lieutenant of the 10th Division prior the promotion of the current captain, Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Rangiku first appears at a lieutenants' meeting, the first one in a long time, and subsequently at another lieutenants' meeting, where it is announced that the 11th Division has been nearly annihilated.

She (with Tetsuzaemon Iba, and others) takes Momo Hinamori to her jail cell and later gives her a letter from Sōsuke Aizen, addressed to Hinamori.

As the conspiracy revolving around the supposed death of 5th Division Captain Sōsuke Aizen and Rukia Kuchiki's execution begins to escalate, Rangiku stands by her captain's side. At one point, Hitsugaya confronts Gin, whom he suspects of murdering Aizen. When Hitsugaya is trapped between defending Hinamori and fighting Gin, Rangiku steps in to confront her friend and help her captain.

She and Hitsugaya attempt to make a final appeal to the Chamber of 46 at the advent of Rukia's execution only to discover all 46 members of the chamber have been killed. Gin's lieutenant, Izuru Kira leads them away from the chamber. When Hitsugaya decides to return to the Chamber of 46, Rangiku stays behind to fight Kira.

Despite the betrayal of Gin, Rangiku remains fairly positive. She is one of six shinigami assigned to aid Ichigo in the human world with the new arrancar threat. She and Hitsugaya appear to be staying with Orihime for the time being. Orihime and Matsumoto have hit it off quite well, partly due to Matsumoto's undiscriminating tastebuds.

The espada Grimmjow Jaggerjack leads an assault on the living world with 5 other arrancar. Rangiku's opponent is the arrancar Nakim. Though as of chapter 208, she seems to be beaten down by Nakim, in chapter 209 it is revealed that she was merely buying herself time, waiting for the approval of her application to "Lift the Limit". She has also applied for this license for her captain Hitsugaya and Renji Abarai. "Lifting the Limit" grants a great power boost to the shinigami. It refers to the fact that lieutenants and captains are required to limit their power by about 80% (through a special tattoo on a part of their body) when in the living world, in order to avoid causing disturbances there. When this limit is lifted, the shinigami's power is restored to its original Soul Society level.

After she "Lifts the Limit" she easily defeats the arrancar Nakim using a basic shunpo and slash.

Rangiku's zanpakutō is Haineko (灰猫, lit. Ash Cat) and the command for its initial release (shikai) is Unare! (Growl!). Its shikai ability remains unknown, even though it has been released twice. It is however known that Haineko will first turn itself into ash. Presumably, it later turns into a cat of some sort. The hiltguard of her zanpaktō is in the shape of a cat's head.

Background info: Yachiru can be described as very cute and innocent in appearance. She has short pink hair and is quite small. She also likes to give people nicknames. She calls another member of the 11th Division "Maki-maki" (meaning rolled rolled), a humourous nickname.

She is usually found latched onto the back of her captain, Zaraki. She is cheerful, energetic, upbeat and surprisingly intimidating at times, especially when annoyed. Like Zaraki, she has no sense of direction. She is also physically stronger than she appears, with the ability to carry Zaraki effortlessly.

Yachiru dislikes being criticized in any way and will often attack the perpetrator. For example, she headbutts Orihime Inoue and bites 3rd Seat Ikkaku Madarame's bald head.

Despite her harmless appearance, it should be noted that Yachiru is the lieutenant of the combat division within Soul Society. This is reflected when she gets into more serious moments and reveals her immense spiritual energy and speed.

Yachiru's parents were murdered in rukongai's 79th district (Kusajishi) when she was a baby. She was found soon after by a nameless but highly skilled sword fighter from Zaraki, the Soul Society's 80th District. The swordsman named the baby Yachiru after the only person who he ever cared about. The swordsman from Zaraki took on his own name that day and became Kenpachi Zaraki.

From that moment on, the two have been inseparable and have developed an argumentative father-daughter relationship. How they entered the seireitei and became shinigami is unknown.

The name and ability of Yachiru's zanpakutō is unknown. She carries her zanpakutō around with a loose cord, rather than at the sash of her uniform. Her zanpakutō's scabbard even has wheels on it to carry it around. It has a child-like flower pattern on the crossguard. Since Yachiru holds the rank of lieutenant, it is likely that she achieved shikai, but considering the fact that she didn't have to take the entrance exam to get her position, it is possible that she doesn't have one either (like Zaraki).

Background info: Ichigo (sometimes called "Strawberry", due to Ichigo (苺) also meaning strawberry), is a tough 15-year-old teenager. His eyebrows are constantly furrowed and his mouth is always in a scowl. However, he is revealed to be kinder and more intelligent than his appearance and attitude would suggest.

Ichigo has natural orange hair, a fact that annoys many upperclassmen in his school, who constantly pick fights with him. Ichigo claims that he does not care what others think (about his hair and other subjects) and seems to enjoy fighting the bullies, often helped by Chad.

Ichigo lives with his father, Isshin Kurosaki, and two sisters, Yuzu and Karin. His father runs a small medical clinic in their house and the entire family pitches in to help. His father is always excited, and constantly "fights" with Ichigo, although it is always in a joking way. Karin is extremely athletic, active, and can suppress her feelings while Yuzu is very passive and emotional.

On the outside, this seems to be a fairly normal family, except for one fact. Ichigo has had an exceptional ability for much of his life: to see and communicate with ghosts. As a matter of fact, the entire Kurosaki family has some degree of spiritual power, which enables this ability. Of the children, Ichigo has the most amount of spiritual power (consequently making him the strongest), with Karin coming in next and Yuzu ranking in last. Initially, Karin can see ghosts (though not shinigami or hollows) as clearly as Ichigo, while Yuzu can only see fuzzy outlines and hear ghosts.

As the series progresses, everybody's powers increase (including some of Ichigo's spiritually-aware friends) because of their contact with Ichigo. Ichigo has an incredible amount of spiritual power (reiatsu), but he cannot control it well; due to this fact, he unconsciously leaks out his spiritual power, which affects spiritually aware people close to him.

Later on in the manga, Ichigo's father is revealed to be a captain-level shinigami whom even Ichigo's teacher, Kisuke Urahara, knows. This suggests that Ichigo gets his tremendous powers from his father. It is not yet known whether Yuzu and Karin have the same potential, though Karin has been known to destroy hollows with Don Kanonji and the Karakura Superheroes.
