Title: Well, what do you think?

Eisel - June 28, 2007 06:16 PM (GMT)
We have a visitor's map . . .

Chicckoo - June 28, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
I voted three times. :)

But, I like it... I don't really get it, though. I think the maps are down right now, so maybe I will understand it when it is back up.

CJHill - June 28, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
It took three tries before it put me on the map.

But I think they're cool. It should let us know how active we are, right?

Eisel - June 28, 2007 07:33 PM (GMT)
They are indeed experiencing difficulties. But this is what it's showing:

I know the Marble Falls is right! :D

CJHill - June 28, 2007 08:43 PM (GMT)
Kinross?

That's 20 miles away.

For this area, it's not that bad.

Thunderlord - June 28, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
If it shows Brigham City, Utah, that's right.

Scarlett9284 - June 29, 2007 12:05 AM (GMT)
I would like it....

if it worked.

EDIT:

took several tries but:

Scarlett9284 - June 29, 2007 12:15 AM (GMT)
Allentown is right! :)

CJHill - June 29, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Allentown? Wow. That would make a wonderful song title...

And I DO NOT live in Kinross!

Jeez.

Thekherham - June 29, 2007 02:36 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, I'd have to look into this a bit more.

Eisel - June 29, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
So I take it you're not in Traverse City either, Ceej?

I dunno if it works or not, they've been experiencing difficulties all day. But there are a bunch up now. It should show all the visitors in a day when working properly. So far it's got Thunderlord, Scarlett & me correctly. That I know of.

Boomstick - June 29, 2007 05:12 AM (GMT)
It's cool, but ridiculously intrusive. I had to adblock the image simply 'cause well I'm just anal retentive when it comes to certain things.

Eisel - June 29, 2007 12:44 PM (GMT)
Well, there is that. Some people might prefer to not have it known where they live.

lol, I love that song so much more that I live there. B)

So, if there are members who object, I would hope they would voice their objections. If there's a concern about privacy, I would have no problem saying we should pull the plug. I dont want anyone feeling we're getting Big Brotherish.

No, not TC either. That's 180 miles (more or less) south of me.

Tonight, for the first time, it had the right place up for me! I'm thrilled.

And that would be Sault Sainte Marie. Home of the world famous Soo Locks, Lake Superior State University (of the world renowned Banished Word List), and the West Pier Drive In restaurant.

So, no, I'm not worried about y'all knowing where I'm at. I live in one of the greatest places in the country - Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We have, after all, the greatest Great Lake of them all.

Chicckoo - June 30, 2007 06:35 PM (GMT)
Why do I live in Eden Prairie? :( That is like an hour away.

Oh well, it is still rather cool to see everyone's whereabouts! (Relative whereabouts, rather)

Eisel - June 30, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
You don't live anywhere now. I removed the map - since I put it up, we got obscenely spammed twice in a row. I don't know that was the cause, but just in case . . . And I tightend up restrictions for registering.

Thunderlord - June 30, 2007 08:15 PM (GMT)
That's good. We were giving people the wrong impression when they saw the "latest news".

Ugh... why do perverts and idiots think that they can do whatever the heck they want on the internet? "The Internet is for Porn", honestly, that's a really s***ty phrase. There's so much crap out there, it's hard to find the good stuff sometimes.

(Self-Censored).

CJHill - June 30, 2007 08:22 PM (GMT)
I'm sorry to see the map go, but completely agree with the decision to pull it.

Spam is irritating and a nusiance but there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it. Wish I had a magic wand to send all the cretins their own spam back. It'd be nice to see them buried with it.

Maybe, some day...

What would be nice is a filter that scans the website before displaying it, and censors all vulgar words and phrases with a black bar. Wouldn't work on anything but text, but it'd be a start.

CJHill - July 2, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
So, not that I disagree with a filter but...

What may be vulgar and all that to one person may not be to another. Is it fair to filter out everyone's content in the same way?

It's one of those slippery slope type situations.

I know people who don't mind getting some of the spam they get. Me, I loath it and it all gets dumped, sight unseen. If I don't know the person sending it to me, or the group, it gets trashed.

Unfortunately, what it comes down to, is that there is no easy solution for any of it.

I'm anti-censorship. You shouldn't need a v-chip, or a censorship filter...You should have parents who explain what words aren't acceptable even if you hear 'em on TV or read them online. My first amendment right says I can say whatever I want. I think that censorship in any capacity is a direct violation of this right.

Now there is a fine line I'm willing to tread, pornography is not for minors, that's law, I accept that. But as far as words are concerned...They should be left the hell alone.

CJHill - July 2, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
Ahhh, the passion of youth...

There's a lot of truth in what you said, Remmy, except for one small thing: the Supreme Court has approved limits on free speech, the most notable example is the one that states you cannot yell fire in a crowded theater.

And, your rights do not take priority over someone else's rights.

Like I said, it's a fine line, with no easy answers.

I disagree with that. The easy answer is to make it a choice. Have it be a program you can install on your computer. You could even have it enabled for certain accounts and disabled for others. So Boomstick, you could have your account see the full strength stuff, while someone else's account (a child's perhaps) could see the censored version.

And Boomstick, some of us don't want to hear the strong stuff, even if we don't repeat it. Might I add adults may not want to see it either, not just kids. If you want to hear it all, I won't stop you. I just like to be able to take out the vulgarities.

For example, there is a company (or, rather, used to be a company, before Hollywood shut it down) that bought thousands of DVDs, edited out swearing, excessive violence, gore, overt sexual content etc., and sold these edited films. I've seen movies full strength and with their editing, and I can say that the movie is just as good without all that, and it's more family friendly. Censorship is like what the Chinese government is doing, where they block it to everyone. What I'm suggesting simply makes it an option.

I'm not changing my stance. Don't wanna hear it? Tough.

(Yes I'm having not such a great day for communicating with people so I'm irritable with everyone)

CJHill - July 3, 2007 10:33 AM (GMT)
So, you're one of those who will scream about his rights being violated but you don't give a rat's behind if someone else's are violated?

Hmmm.

No, I know you aren't like that.

At least, I think I know you're not.

And I'm sorry you had a tough day. Hopefully today will be better.
