It's Nearly Upon Us

NaNoWriMo is nearly upon us. Who is participating this year? Anyone got a genre or a plot outlined? Discuss it nao!

I did have a vague plan for what I was going to do, but I've lost enthusiasm for that now. I'm thinking of doing something sci-fi instead... but I dunno. I suppose I don't have much time to figure it out though

I've changed my mind twice in the past couple of weeks... but I've finally decided now. Really.

I've gone from have one sorta idea to having three sorta ideas...

As soon as I figure it out, I'll let you know.

I keep going back and forth, so I most likely won't know what I'm writing until I start the actual writing.

I decided on what I wanted to write, just in the nick of time. I need to do a little prep work but I should be able to sit down for two hours or 5,000 words a day as a target and crank this bad boy out starting November 1.

Yes my concept is taking shape, there will likely not be an end, just a revelation and a fade to black, but who knows, maybe I'll come up with some good way to end it.

The nano site is predictably swamped today... I'm sure it'll be even worse tonight.

Okay. For those of you participating and for the sake of not trying to find you on the NaNo site. What are you writing about this year?

My story involves ten characters, and four different settings. It's a character driven story, I'm still working on the foil in it's entirety, but I've got the lattice laid for it and it's twists. I predict the end will not likely be difinitive one, more likely a 'fade to black' ending. But we'll see.

Mine's a story about a guy. Not a nice guy. He ends up, should I ever get that far, deciding that being not-a-nice-guy isn't a good long term strategy, not that he ever loses that not-a-nice-guy-ness entirely. At the moment his brother has just been caught by the cops, and after the poor kid is killed he does some more not-nice-guy things and rushes off to collide with destiny. Or at least with another character I've written about in this world, who pretty much has that effect on people.

Said character is a gal, in fact. That last sentence gives you entirely the wrong idea about the story.

I struggled for the first few days 'cause I still wasn't totally sure about what I was writing, but something clicked last night and I'm up around 5000 now. So, we'll see. It's set a few hundred years in the future, here in New Zealand, when we've colonised Mars and have pretty much given up on Earth due to global warming and such, all the investment is in space as that's where humanity's future lies. My main character works for the organization which evolved out of the UN and is sent down here for peace keeping as we're in a bit of political turmoil... there are a whole lot of groups which control various parts of the land including the remnants of the government here in Wellington, a Maori nationalist movement in Waikato and Taranaki derived from the Kingitanga, and Christian fundamentalists up in Auckland just for fun (see this article for why).

Mine is about a young woman who has just spent six years locked up in a mental hospital after pushing a much loved priest off the roof of an eight story building and killing him because he was really a demon.

And there's the mystery man who may or may not be there to help her.

I'll be glad to give you more details when I know them myself.

Mine is about ten characters from different settings. The basic, underlying foil, is how some guy from Setting 'A' got to Setting 'B', whether setting 'B' be 180 years in the future or a parallel dimension, or whatever, is something each 'group' of characters will slowly unveil.

Ten characters into four groups. Maybe five, we'll see how they mesh, I may cut some out later on. When I know more you'll all know more . I haven't gotten very far yet, and I need to get cooking.
