My husband thought he would go to my GP for a check up, as he is 41 years old and never had a proper check up with blood tests etc. He had a fasting blood test and yesterday when he rang for the results the receptionist told him that he would have to make an appointment with the GP because the tests came back with low blood sugar and increased liver function. I am so worried that something bad might be wrong with him.

He is meant to be the healthy one out of the two of us. sad.gif

I hope that it isn't anything serious, too. It could be hypoglycemia...try to stay calm because he is probably feeling frightened himself...easier said than done, though. 57.gif I really get upset when my husband feels badly or has something going wrong...we depend on them so much to be the strong healthy ones.

Sometimes he starts to have a bit of a funny turn (weak and shaky) and then eats a chocolate bar and feels better after that. The thing that worries me is that when he sleeps on his side (the side where his liver is located ... right???) he often wakes up during the night in pain. When he had his check up he voiced his concern and the GP had a feel around and said that it all felt normal with his liver and he was not in pain when she had a feel around. He does like to have a beer or two (or a glass of red or two) when he gets home from work (not every night) but he is in no way an alcoholic. Maybe this is a warning sign to say "no more alcohol". It makes it pretty hard when you work in a winery and there is always free beer and wine on offer.

Oh Dav! What a shame for you both. All I can say, from long hard experience, is don't try and second guess what is going on there.

My brother has problems with his liver, kidneys and pancreas now. Every time he gets a winge he is in panic mode till he sees his GP! He has now given up drinking, most of the time, as he has accepted that alcohol increases his symptoms and makes him feel really unwell! He has a diagnosis of a congenital, degeneritive kidney disorder and has self diagnosed liver problems and pancreatitis!

So, wait and see what the doc has to say. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you think.

I suffer from hypoglycaemia at times. I have had very low blood sugars even after eating but there is no diagnosed cause for this. It is just something that happens to me. My friend's daughter is the same. We have learnt to manage that and carry on. So, don't assume the worst until you have it in black and white!

i hope whatever they find it is not serious.

Thanks for your positive words Ruth. Yep we will just have to wait and see what the doctor says. I think I am more worried than him about it.

No not yet, his appointment is on Friday at 3.30pm.

I was talking to a lady the other day and she had a check up with blood tests and she had high blood sugar(my hubby has low blood sugar) with increased liver function. She does not drink alcohol at all. Maybe it isn't an alcohol related thing at all.

My hubby is doing a fasting blood test again in a week but our GP is pretty sure that he was possibly born with Gilbert's Syndrome???
