As for the Bios, yes it is indeed stored on the modchip.  The modchip has banks of memory and you flash the bios onto those and then when you power the xbox with the modchip on, the modchip's bios boots instead of the normal xbox bios.

If you're softmodding there is no modchip, so WTF is the BIOS for?

And as for Xbox Live it depends on your settings.  If you have Xbox Live enabled as soon as you turn on the Xbox and are using the soft-mod, I'm pretty sure you will be banned.

So how do I go on Live while softmodded without getting banned? Do I have to undo and redo the softmod each time? With my chipped Xbox I just turn off my modship and boot from the standard BIOS/Dashboard and the original Halo 2 disc. Can't change my HDD though because of the marriage thing. :-(

Ok from my limited knowledge of softmodding the most common bios loader is Phoenix. You would run that to start the soft mod.

So, I think you can boot the xbox normally and then run Phoenix which will enable the soft mod.

Also because there is no chip, Phoenix is the program that loads the hacked bios so you can expand the limits of the Xbox.

So Phoenix tricks your Xbox into thinking it is chipped when it isn't.

Like I said, anyone more knowledgeable feel free to correct me.
