Reasons I don't like Inara:
1. She's too weak.
2. She's gets around.
3. She is not a strong equal for Capt.
4. Did I mention "weak" ?

Okay, I don't NOT like her. She is an okay character, but I just don't see her as a viable love interest for Mal. They seem to have less chemistry than even Mal and Kailey do! What's up with that?

Hey Amy! Welcome

Overall I do like Inara, but hey. I feel we didn't get to see enough of her to really know who she is sincerely as a person. I can see how you can figure she's weak, but I like to believe that underneath that 'weak' exterior she had a very strong side within her. I mean... she's 'proper' and travelling with Mal and the gang, right?

I don't think we can really go off on her about getting around, it seems in their time - our 'future' - being a companion is accepted. That's her job, how she makes money for herself. And... she selects those she services unlike how prostitutes and whores do things nowadays (I guess, I really wouldn't know LOL).

I think Inara and Mal are an interesting pair... their attraction for each other is obvious, but Mal just has intimacy issues, leads her on one moment (ie: "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when he questions her about why she passed out when Saffron was on Serenity), and then the next makes it out as if it's a joke or that he hasn't noticed that she likes him (and vice versa).

I can see the Mal/Kaylee thing now that you mentioned it a couple weeks ago when we were over watching a few FF episodes, but I don't feel it would have gone anywhere. I get the feeling Mal/Kaylee is more along that brother/sister kind of thing rather than potential lovers, but that's just me. I'll like the pairing regardless though, it doesn't bother me and I can see where it comes from

Can I ask what Inara has (or hasn't done) that makes you see her as a weak character?

She lets people walk all over her!. In the pilot, the alliance officer insults her after they've just done the wild thing and she doesn't react at all! She should have told him to go to hell or shot him in the foot or something! The man deserved no less. I dont "dislike" her, I just wish she had been developed more as a female rolemodel than a male sex fantasy.

I think it's her nature to not overreact when an idiot is insulting to her. Some ppl will throw a few punches or nasty words, or an angry look, and some ppl will just roll their eyes and remember that there are assholes in the world. I think Inara is the latter.

There are moments in "Firefly" where I feel scenes were written for the male sex fantasy - bathing herself with the sponge, the female client she had, etc. I think had the show continued that we would have seen more development of her character than what we got.

I just think she is reall shiny, and is very calm in itense situations, and can hold her own if pushed. overall I would have to say I like her. Plus she has the bigest brown eyes I have ever seen on a woman.

From what I've seen (and I have not yet seen every episode of Firefly, I plan to buy the DVD set next month, bought the LE RPG book this month...heh) Companions don't just have sex with their clients... Sure, a lot of customers just want that, but one episode I have seen Inara has a female client that just wants someone she can talk to that doesn't care that she's a high-profile political person. The crew of the ship of course have all their speculations about what kinky lesbian action must be goin' on, but nothing did (unless I missed somethin' due to watching it on Sci-Fi?), not that she told them even that.

She just chooses not to service them again, or gives them a black mark in the Companion Registry, like she did to Atherton Wing in "Shindig". In their 'verse, companions have all the power when it comes to their business. Guilds are fun like that.

She isn't weak; she's smart, refined, and likes to work inside the system... most of the time.

Ack. He is like a father-figure to her. Kaylee and Jayne is a more believable couple. And I really think Inara is a very misunderstood character. :)

I know they kiss... I kinda got the implication there was more that we couldn't see due to it not being a "skinimax" show...

But, in other episodes it was plainly stated that Inara DID have female clients, just not very often, giving me the impression that she herself is heterosexual, but she's not disgusted by homosexuals, and will be with a woman if the woman is special (like all clients must be, since she usually can only be with one in the short time they are on a planet)
