Does the landing gear really come down when the plane is that close to the ground?

I always thought it was much, much higher above ground when the gear is deployed.

Hi. Interjecting that not only is that picture NOT a shop, I've actually been there and sat on that very beach.

It's in St. Martin, on the dutch side, 5 minutes from the casino/tourist/commercial part of the island called "Maho", which is in that lane between the two white building. The parasols belong to a little bar which is called Sunset ...something (I was drunk a lot, fuck you) and the planes actually go that low, as well as lifting off from that section as well, with their turbines causing a huge sandstorm on that beach, which is pretty damn fun to stand in the middle of. tongue.gif Although it does somewhat hurt.

All in all: Awesome island.

So are there any warning signs around there? Or do they just like to let people figure it out for themselves?

It already is fully deployed in all the photos...

St Maarten. And I've hung onto the fence while 747 went to full takeoff power. Had earplugs in and was wearing hearing protection. I went vertical, and only sheer panic kept me hanging on.

Yes.

And they are there for good reason, since not all planes come in nice and high.

It's fucking scary to stand under these.

Because unlike in the photos, these things are flying over you at about 160 mp/h

To the best of my knowledge, no... It is only a visual approach, so weather will always be good for a landing there.

Despite it's looks, it's a really easy approach, you fly straight in over essentially nothing (just the ocean) and land.

Now St Baarts or Lukla, those are tough approaches.
