If you get yourself a marine polyfilter and cut it into say 1" x 1/2" strips attach it to a rubber band and onto an airline and bubble it into your water container it will change colour quite quickly indicating whats in your water..............................bit like a litmus test. Most tap if safe to drink is ideal for discus, or we'd all be suing our water companies. Metals etc. are just as toxic to humans as they are fish!!!!

Hi granville,
does the green butt leach out some stuff to ro water??
thanks

Hi Jim,
They are usually made from re-cycled plastic and coloured with a colourant containg cyanide, in very soft water the cyanide is absorbed into the water..............
They do say for garden use only, but people don't understand!!!!
If you check one which has been used for a while the inside green colour will be very faded because of this.
Cheers Granville

Shit.
I have a black one. How do you test for cyanide.
granville - January 10, 2006 02:48 PM (GMT)
Blacks fine Anto,
If you are ever worried I've outlined the polyfilter test elsewhere, and it shows cyanide etc. on the colour change,
Cheers G

Hi Anto Baby,
Here some information for you.

Cyanide ReagentStripTM
Designed for monitoring effluents and surface waters, the Cyanide ReagentStripTM Kit requires as little as two minutes for cyanide colorimetric analysis.
The test procedure is as follows: add 2 ml sample to microcuvette, dip #1 ReagentStripTM (adjusts the pH of the sample and converts cyanide to cyanogen chloride) for 30 seconds into sample, then dip #2 ReagentStripTM (cyanogen chloride reacts with Isonicotinic and Dimethylbarbituric acids to for a blue color) for 30 seconds. View #2 ReagentStripTM for blue color to determine semi-quantitative concentration. After 10 minutes match color in cuvette to color chart for quantitative cyanide concentration. Color reading can also be made using a colorimeter or spectrophotometer for more precise determination. Detection sensitivity is 0.01 PPM (mg/L), with a range to 1.0 PPM. The DPD ReagentStripTM Cyanide Kit is the quick and accurate solution for testing cyanide concentrations.
