Title: Pre filters
yazz - February 28, 2006 11:13 AM (GMT)
Hi guys and gals, I was wondering if i could use a sheet of filter floss instead of the pre-filter pads you get for the top section of the canister filters?
MarkyP - February 28, 2006 11:15 AM (GMT)
yes you can >> i use the pre filter matting for pond filters it works out cheaper.

mike os - February 28, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
yep, get the biggest pond filter mat you can & just cut it up ;)
yazz - February 28, 2006 06:26 PM (GMT)
How often do you change your filter floss?
mike os - February 28, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
when it gets blocked......in my case every day........on a sump though ;)
yazz - February 28, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
Every day wow! I think having a sump is the best form of filtration for a tank. Its so much easier to mess about with. How big is your tank? Or do you have several tanks?
mike os - February 28, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
9 tanks on the main system, 3 on a second smaller system under construction atm....made the sump yesterday & painted tanks tonite :D
yazz - February 28, 2006 08:57 PM (GMT)

Hi Yazz ,getting back to prefilters what filter have you,cos I have recently got an Eheim with prefilter and have no idea how often it wants cleaning, and given when full it weighs in the region of 30 kilos it's not something I can take out and check everyday,so.............. what you got????? Luv Angel :)
yazz - March 2, 2006 12:01 PM (GMT)
Hi i have rena ps3 and a tetratec 600.I change my pre-filters once a month or if they get a very dark brown. You can usually tell when to change the pre-filters, The water flow in the outflow pipe becomes less.Depending on your fish load i would say between 2 weeks to 4 weeks.Best thing to do is check it at 2 weeks and if its quite dark then replace at 2 weeks if its just a light tan colour you would be alright to replace it every 4 weeks.I hope this helps :)

Cheers Yazz,do you have the Rena xp3 ? Iv'e been changing mine nearly every week ,think too much, but it's invariably filthy, great help colours I need pictures drawing : :D trouble with the Eheim, there like pads bout an inch thick and cost a fortune here,so cant be changing too often, anyone got ideas of a cheap substitute?? thanks. :) Angel

Hi sorry the rena is an xp3? Cheap substitite would have to be the pond filter pad mike mentioned i brought a pad sized 48" x 21"approx 3" - 4" thick for £7.49.If you find it gets filthy every week give it a good rinse out with the tank water or another tip someone gave me was when the filter pad gets really filthy remove it and replace with a new one and give the old one a good wash let it dry and use it the next time.He told me you can get approx 3 uses out of each pad.Hope this helps. ^_^
