Hi all
back again

my breeding pair finally got wrigglers this weekend but by yesterday all the fry were dead on the bottom of the tank.if i looked closely you could see them wriggling but slow died.the parents did nt seem that bothered to put them back.

notice one previous spawns they would remove the unfert eggs but this time they never touched them till all the fry had died.

Hi Dave,

The parents know when a batch is bad,

The usual causes for what you've seen, are either velvet, toxins in water or gram negative bacteria.

Keep an eye on the parents, if they start to show signs of mucous, you'll have your answer,

Are these the fish that are left from the ones that had the major problem????

Cheers G

hi g
how are you
no mate bought 2 adults got put off with young fish till get more experience.
the pair spawn regular with various results.

1.get to wrigglers then eat them
2.lay eggs 24 hours later to the hour they eat the lot
3.with hours of hatching start to eat the unfert eggs and then go on and eat the rest.

most recently number 2.

they laid a massive bunch this time and mb added and they got to wrigglers +36 hours and i noticed lot of dead fry on tank bottom and the unfert eggs untouched with wrigglers around them.

slowly all the wrigglers came off cone and died on the bottom.

this was the first time i had used a different method with mb suggested on another forum where mb is added till you can just see a white bit of paper at the back of tank.
someone else has said that mb kills filter bacteria?and this is why the fry died

totally lost AGAIN!! blink.gif wacko.gif

True,

Try myxazin instead of the mb, the mb can kill them as well if too strong,

Chat then,

Cheers G

forgot to say, leave 4 hours after fertilisation before using myxazin, sperm are considered protozoan, and myxazin and mb destroy protozoan!!!!!!!!

looks like they about to spawn again so better get some quick.

the amount of mb was a lot nearly double the amount may this could be the cause.

Hi Lee
this was a pair before I got them and they have laid nearly every week since may.I have no real wish to breed but it would be nice to see,but there is no pattern to there spawning, sometimes they eat in 24 hours sometimes right after they hatch other times 24 hours after they hatch.

I know its no easy but this is relly wierd

Dave,

If they can't see another pair to guard the eggs/fry against, their natural instincts and parental care mode are shut off, boredom cuts in, so they eat the offspring 'cos they know they will put more up..............................

If you haven't got more adults, even some juveniles next door are quite effective at keeping the parents, "parental"

36 hours to wrigglers is too soon, may indicate the temperature is too high. It should be 48-52 hours in normal circumstances.
