Fancharacters, What do you think of them?

Fancharacters... I actually have fancharacters myself. So I'm not really against fancharacters, but I do agree with what you said about them in the Sonic RPG thread, Avenger. That most of them are just recolors (brown Sonic, green striped Shadow, purple Knuckles, orange Amy, etc). Whenever I see uncreative fancharacters like that, I actually do cringe a little. Which is why I'm self-conscious and totally paranoid about whether my own creations are original or not.

Yours is actually one of those rare, original ones I was talking about. Pexas, is it?

Close. It's Pexxus, actually. And hearing that puts me a bit more at ease. One thing I do try to do with my characters is avoid using hedgehogs or foxes and try using animals that are rarely or never seen in Sonic games. Also, most people here are witness to the fact that I came up with Rage the Falcon BEFORE Sonic Riders came out.

Thanks again, though, for putting my mind at ease about that. And, ya, I actually do agree with you about how most fancharacters are just recolors. I look at them and think, "Oh, Sonic fell into a pool of red paint?" I mean, they're not even new characters, appearance-wise.

I think this is part of the reason I initially didn't like the idea of Silver. While Silver is kind of a cool character, it still bugs me that he's another hedgehog. With Shadow, I kinda felt it appropriate since he was meant to be the "Anti-Sonic", but Silver kinda seemed like overkill... I dunno, though, these are just my opinions.

I think they should've kept Silver as a Mink, personally. But I guess having three hedgehogs, not counting Amy, made more sense to the corporate brass at Sega.

I see Yuji Naka's influence all over Silver though, just because of the following.


And yeah, about the "Red Sonic" things, I've called people out on this, and these are the two most common responses, paraphrased.

Heh heh. That picture would have been better if all three hedgehogs were in their super forms. (or maybe non SS versions of Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks)

As for recolored Sonic characters passing off for original creations... ya, I continue to agree with you on that.

Hmmm... maybe we should turn this into a new topic, as I'm certain there's a LOT that can be discussed about fancharacters. In fact, I'll do that right now!

Yeah, thats true, but I'm assuming Sega didn't want to show off the Super forms at the time that photo was released. (Although we'd seen two of the three already...)

Anywho, there's one really, REALLY popular fancharacter that I don't like. And while I don't her design is too unoriginal (at least, what I mean by that is that it's not JUST a recolor), her design isn't really too much of the reason I dislike her. I don't know if I want to mention who it is, in case there's any fans of that character here, but ya... she's a REALLY popular fancharacter that I don't like very much.

Okay, I'm risking getting people that like this character to come and flame the heck out of me, but I have to speak my mind.

I am referring to THIS character:


Becky the Hedgehog

She's so popular, that there's even other fancharacters out there that are cheap recolors of her!

Anywho, it's out there. And ya, I have many reasons for disliking this fancharacter. Granted, she's definitely more original in design than most fancharacters, but as I stated, that's not really the reason I dislike her.

Yikes! Its like Rouge and Sonic had a kid!

Great artwork, though. I must say, you could trick the casual fan into thinking its official Sega work.

I'm a little surprised you haven't heard of her, she seems to be everywhere. And yes, she has a LOT of fans everywhere all over the net. In fact, she's created somewhat of a subculture all her own.

Oh, and yes, the art is top-notch. The artist (who calls herself Purity) is indeed a very talented artist. However, the reason I dislike her character is because she seems to... aww, screw it, I'll just go outright and say it. There's more "inappropriate" art of the character out there than legitimate art... which in and of itself might not seem like a good reason to dislike the character until you find out that 90% of that "inappropriate" art is by the creator of the character herself!

So, ya, I dislike the character because, to me, she feels like she was created solely for the purpose of hentai art. I hate that a fancharacter can become so popular despite (or who knows, maybe BECAUSE OF) the fact that her reason for existence seems to merely be for lewd purposes.

I've followed the character for a long time on and off. Her origin was, interestingly enough, as a recolor of Amy Rose named after the artist (Purity was formerly known as Becky... which could be her real name). Through time her image (as well as Purity's artistic talent) has evolved to what you see today. She's been around for a VERY long time.

I was expecting you'd say something about her overly accentuated... Um... Features...

Yeah, the boobs are a dead giveaway that she was definitely created for, and mostly popular for, freaky hedgehog porn.

Meh. I don't mind a character with "highly accentuated features" (see Rouge), because there are a lot of people in real life that have those. I mean, if someone created nothing BUT characters with big boobs, then it'd get annoying, but if there's one thing I believe in, it's variety. Meaning that I like a universe to be like real life... in that characters all have different attributes. Big boobs, small boobs, long hair, short hair, tall, short, skinny, fat, muscular, whatever.

But I digress... I probably wouldn't have a beef with the character of Becky if it weren't for that. I mean, it's bad enough to have "feaky hedgehog porn" of real characters... but there's something unsettling about creating a character for the sole purpose of "freaky hedgehog porn".

Incidentally, I like saying "freaky hedgehog porn"... it amuses me so.

Ahhh, fan characters.

I've seen good, I've seen bad, and I've even seen an all out Mary Sue. (Of course, that author was making fun of them.)

Excluding my kid OCs , I have a couple.

Well, three...One of them is a hedgehog, and he had been intended as a throwaway character. *Cough*Issai*Cough*

Anyways, I tend to pretty linient on fan characters. The only reasons I'll dislike one is if they are a Gary Stu/Mary Sue, or if their's a romance involved with a Canon, and the Canon returns it...

There are, of course, exceptions to everything.

And I had not heard of this character named Becky either.

Of course, here and FF.Net are pretty much my only Sonic stops...Oh, and DA too, I suppose.

It's sad, really. The internet can be a really screwed-up place at times. :X

Heh. Pexxus. He's actually a character I like, just because he does not follow stereotypes. He is a groundhog, but strong. He has a team, but they're unlike anything else out there. Even if he's not exactly famous, he;s still a character I like to see, and is a very good creation from a non-standard mind.

And he's not into the freaky hedgehog *bleep*. That is always a plus.

I made some of my own characters and still use them. Though I don't remember whether Nite came into play before or after Silver was released...
